Hot Rize – Hot Rize’s 40th Anniversary Bash (2018)

Hot Rize, one of Colorado’s most influential bands in any genre, will kick off their 40th anniversary year with a celebration at the Boulder Theater, and they’re inviting some special friends along.

In 1978, when Pete Wernick, Tim O’Brien, Nick Forster and Charles Sawtelle came together as a band, their chemistry soon generated an exciting and soulful new style of bluegrass, showcasing their formidable talents as instrumentalists, songwriters, and innovators. Grounded in the bluegrass traditions of artists like Bill Monroe, Flatt & Scruggs, and the Stanley Brothers, their musical tastes embraced other American roots pathways as well. Honing their sound in Colorado bars and small concerts, they were soon appearing on Prairie Home Companion, the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, the Grand Ole Opry, and European tours. The world was ready for Hot Rize — and forty years later Hot Rize has left its unmistakable mark.

Their original songs are part of the bluegrass canon, their showmanship earned them the first-ever Entertainer of the Year award from the IBMA, and their “partnership” with Red Knuckles and the Trailblazers is … nearly indescribable. There is no other band like Hot Rize, and the Colorado bands that followed in their wake all cite them as a major influence.

Following Charles Sawtelle’s untimely death in 1999, the band regrouped with bluegrass’ reigning flat picker, North Carolinian Bryan Sutton on guitar. Since 2002, Hot Rize’s unparalleled all-star lineup has held steady and continues to create new and inspired music.

Don’t miss this rare chance to celebrate the homegrown musical legacy of one of Colorado’s most revered bands. Special luminaries honoring the occasion with their presence will include Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, Del McCoury, Stuart Duncan and more to be announced. Warm up your winter with two hot and unforgettable nights of music at the Boulder Theater with Hot Rize and their special guests.

Frank Newsome – Gone Away With A Friend

On “Gone Away with a Friend,” Frank Newsome sings a more than four-century-long American tradition into the present. His arresting style—the lined-out hymn singing of the Old Regular Baptists from the borderlands of Kentucky, Virginia, and West Virginia—is a direct sonic ancestor to old-time, bluegrass, and gospel. In fact, bluegrass master Ralph Stanley grew up hearing this once-common style of singing and attended Newsome’s church later in his life where they spent time singing together. Since 1972, Newsome has preached at the Little David Church in Haysi, VA, singing these songs from what is the oldest, English-language religious music tradition passed down orally in America. This album, captured over one evening at Newsome’s church in 2006, features eight traditional hymns, two contemporary songs, and an improvised prayer all sung in the distinct, unaccompanied style of the Old Regular Baptists. Newsome has been widely recognized for his singular voice, including the high honor of being named an NEA National Heritage Fellow. To listen closely to Newsome’s singing on this sparse and captivating album is to dip your toe into the headwaters of the great stream of American music.

“There is a purity about Frank’s singing that brings a soul-stirring, heart-tugging peacefulness that is beyond words” — Jim Lauderdale

BLUES REVIVAL 56: WASHBOARD SAM (1910-1966)

Ben de la Cour – The High Cost of Living Strange (2018)

Born in London, but raised in Brooklyn and now based in Nashville by way of a lengthy stint in New Orleans, The High Cost of Living Strange is Ben de la Cour’s fourth album but, I have to confess, the first I’ve heard of him. My loss. I have no idea how this stands up against his previous material, but, trading in what he terms Americanoir, it’s evident that he’s studied at the musical feet of dust country troubadours like van Zandt and Clark. Indeed, one of the album stand-outs happens to be titled Guy Clark’s Fiddle, a gently strummed, wearily sung number about regrets, broken dreams and how “in the end, not everything is wanting to be fixed.” The influences can also be heard on Uncle Boudreaux Went Down To Texas, a poignant story about trying to figure out where you belong as recounted through the singer’s memory of a relative who regaled everyone with his stories of his adventures in the Lone Star State and how got to meet Townes, but who, in fact never got closer to Texas than “Willie’s Greatest Hits.”

Billy Contreras on fiddle, the album opens on an uptempo southern swing with handclaps driving along the rhythms for Dixie Crystals. But it’s the slower, more reflective material that stands out most, the twanged guitar underpinning the rolling rhythm of Company Town and its grim portrait of the damage done to small town communities by corporate America. Equally pointed is the introspective Face Down Penny, another musical Clark echo, with its Dylanish harmonica and circling strummed acoustic guitar pattern.

If you’re wondering where the noir comes in, then give an ear to Tupelo, a claustrophobic fiddle scraping slow Southern Gothic prowl about a guy picking up a female hitchhiker desperate to get out of the titular town, the ominous mood growing as the journey progresses and the track turns into a murder ballad.

Far too short at just eight tracks and 31 minutes, it winds down with, first the fingerpicked Just Like The Blues with its playfully pessimistic dead man walking lyrics and, finally, turning the musical template on its head by cranking up the amps and fuzz for the darker title track’s swampy electric slide guitar swagger about “a young man singing an old man’s blues”, with its observation that “if you ask for nothing, nothing’s all you get” but that “the harder you lean on something, the harder it will let you down.” This album won’t.
