‘Trainride’ is a band founded by Australian duo singer-guitarists Steve Bridger and Simon O’Neil. After 20 years of jamming and playing parties, Steve and Simo booked some studio time at The Grove Studios in Gosford, north of Sydney, where they met producer Josh Telford, who encouraged them to make an album.

Following on from a demo album, Steve and Simo were joined by legendary Brisbane guitarist Simon Gardner and the powerhouse rhythm section of David Shaw (drums) Tommy Hynes (bass) and Michael Hynes (keyboards), and ‘Trainride’ was born. A couple more songs ‘Give it Back’ and ‘Bout The Song’ were recorded in Brisbane and the debut album ‘Southern Calling’ (after the title track) was finished in 2017.

Originally issued on the Warner Bros. label in November 1970, “Air Conditioning” showcased the highly innovative talents of Sonja Kristina (vocals), ex-Royal College of Music student Darryl Way (violin), former Royal Academy of Music student Francis Monkman (electric guitar, piano, mellotron, VCS3 synthesiser), Rob Martin (bass) and Florian Pilkington-Miksa (drums). Taking their name from the album “A Rainbow in Curved Air” by American composer Terry Riley, Curved Air’s debut album perfectly demonstrated the band’s innovative musical approach, blending classical, electronic and folk music influences in their work and featuring Sonja Kristina’s sublime vocals.

Featuring such classic tracks as ‘It Happened Today’, ‘Propositions’, ‘Vivaldi’ and ‘Situations’, “Air Conditioning” was a Top Ten hit in the UK and firmly established Curved Air as one of Britain’s foremost progressive bands. This new expanded Esoteric Recordings two disc edition features the original album, re-mastered from the original master tapes, along with eleven bonus tracks which include the rare single version of ‘It Happened Today’ and the non-album track ‘What Happens When You Blow Yourself Up’. Disc Two of the set features three previously unissued session out-takes of ‘It Happened Today’, ‘Rob One’ and the highly sought after ‘Thinking on the Floor’ and six tracks recorded in session for BBC Radio One between November 1970 and January 1971.

Pete Seeger began singing, playing the banjo, and collecting folk music in the mid-1930s¯and has continued doing so into the 21st century. His life encompasses the social upheavals and transformations of much of the 20th century, while his peace anthems and songs of struggle and hope thread through our national soundtrack. They are as often sung by schoolchildren as by activists at peace and environmental rallies. Even in his late eighties, he inspires people across generations, cultures, and nations.

These songs have been part of the fabric of America for a half century or more-and these five volumes of folk ballads recorded by Pete in the ’50s and ’60s were an integral part of our folk revival. Here are all 139 folk ballads on 5 CDs, each with its own booklet full of extensive notes; legendary songs and performances abound: John Henry; Clementine; Goodnight Irene; Yankee Doodle; Old Dan Tucker; Hole in the Bucket; This Land Is Your Land; America the Beautiful; Midnight Special; Froggie Went A-Courtin’; Boll Weevil; Erie Canal; Arkansas Traveler , and more!

Lucero – Among The Ghosts (2018)

616FoT8-3IL._SS500.jpg320 kbps | 94 MB | LINKS

OK, let’s break the rules and get straight to the point – ‘Among the Ghosts‘ is a very good album. No need to read through, or (heaven forbid) even skim over a few hundred words describing the songs, the background to the music to get to the summary. No sirree! Here at Americana UK rules were made to be broken, so here it is again, right up front and in your face. This is a very good album. With that out of the way, it’s back to normal service. ‘Among the Ghosts’ is Lucero’s 9th studio album and after 20 years together they are showing no signs of slowing up and are still making mighty fine music.

Under the expert production and engineering leadership of Matt Ross-Spang (of Jason Isbell and Margo Price fame), they have returned to their roots and crafted an album of 10 excellent tracks that are an engaging blend of the type of blue collar, hard-driving gritty rock that you can expect to experience at their live concerts.

It was April 1998 when Lucero made their first appearance on stage in Memphis and there is no doubt that their music has developed and matured through the intervening years. ‘Among the Ghosts‘ sees the band return to a cleaner sound, one that shuns the need for horn sections and overly complex arrangements for a vibe that, while it’s somewhat stripped back, manages to pull off the neat trick of being somewhat darker both lyrically and musically, and there is little doubt that it’s all the better for it.

It’s clear too that since the birth of his daughter 2 years ago, frontman and co-founder Ben Nichols has a different outlook on life and there is a recurring theme throughout the album that ponders the uncomfortable hardship of family separation that is an almost inevitable outcome for a touring band member.

A perfect example of this is found in ‘To My Dearest Wife‘. On the surface it’s a tale of a soldier deeply missing his wife and daughters while contemplating his uncertain fate at the next morning’s inevitably bloody battle, but in reality it’s Nichols writing and singing of the pain of having to hit the road and leave his own wife and young daughter behind. A really clever aspect of this song is Nichols’ use of the first verse from the ‘Battle Hymn of the Republic‘ (Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory) in the bridge of the song, very skillfully anchoring the track to a distinct place and time – the American Civil War.

There isn’t a bad track on ‘Among the Ghosts‘ and its blend of driving rhythms, high-quality musicianship inventive lyrics combined with Nichols’ gravelly vocals keep you engrossed from the first track to the last. If you’re not familiar with Lucero, then ‘Among the Ghosts‘ is as good a place as any to start.

Amanda Shires – To The Sunset (2018)

A parking lot at night is a setting in which many women have learned to feel unsafe, to hurry about their business with heightened awareness that any strange figure approaching may have sinister intentions. Amanda Shires opens her new album To the Sunset with a strikingly different scenario. “Last night you walked me to my car / You said, ‘You won’t be getting far before you turn around,'” she sings, her phrasing seesawing and scampering. Then her character takes control of the exchange in a teasing tone. “I did a parking lot pirouette / I said, ‘You’re right — I’m not done with you yet.'” The song is named “Parking Lot Pirouette” for its protagonist’s graceful forwardness, her decisive movement to prolong a pleasurable dalliance.

During the #MeToo moment, much emphasis has been rightly placed on the need for women to guard themselves against the unrestrained appetites of male perpetrators. Maintaining that vigilance and devoting necessary energy and attention to confronting and correcting not only sexual wrongdoing but warped thinking can be all-consuming. While Shires might not have set out to make an album that reminds us of the power of women pursuing their own impulses, desires and ambitions with abandon, that perspective enlivens this bracing 10-song set.

In the decade-plus that Shires has been making solo albums — in addition to working as a side person with Billy Joe Shaver, Justin Townes Earle and, eventually, her husband and fellow singer-songwriter Jason Isbell — she’s expressed self-consciousness about the shivers and tremors in her singing voice, tried to smooth them out of her delivery and ultimately embraced its untameness. When her distinctive vibrato appears on To the Sunset, as a subtle emotive tool or punctuation in her storytelling, it feels like an electrical charge shuddering through the live wire of her voice. (In “Wasn’t I Paying Attention,” a tale of dramatically staged, small-town suicide, for example, the way she sings the word “attention” amplifies the narrator’s unsettled state.) As if to match it, she experimented for the first time with filtering the sound of her fiddle through effects pedals, which lends her playing a fierce luminescence. Shires told her producer Dave Cobb, who also served as bassist in the album’s indie rock-leaning band (with Isbell on lead guitar), “My violin needs to sound like it’s in an aquarium, but more bright.”

Shires and Isbell have a toddler daughter together, and thanks to gendered assumptions about the distribution of their parenting duties, Shires has fielded more than her share of questions about how she balances motherhood and music-making. When she paints a picture of motherhood in the subdued jangle-pop number “Charms,” she doesn’t dwell on its oft-idealized and sentimentalized facets. She sings of the excruciating awareness of both mirroring and superseding her own mother. “I’m daring to do what she couldn’t bring herself to do,” Shires ruminates, shadowed by her own feathery harmonies. “Isn’t it just like a daughter to make a fool of you? / And the fear that I feel when I see my features reversed in my own daughter’s face.” After trailing off there, she draws a thorny conclusion about the web of intimate, familial dependency: “Maybe being human is an orphaned condition and what’s missing isn’t what should be found.”

In the bruising roots rocker “Eve’s Daughter,” propelled by a tense groove and serrated, scraggy guitar riffs, Shires plays the part of a woman so desperate to expand her horizons and satisfy her hunger that she’s unafraid to take risks in the name of escape. “Maybe it was circumstance, but I saw my chance and I took it,” she boasts, her tone fuzzed-out by distortion. “Through a sunset, shifting gears, to the something better shining diamond clear.”

Shires has an MFA in poetry, and she’s exacting in her use of imagery to portray sensuality as a force both internal and physical. In “Leave It Alone,” a song introduced by a brittle, programmed loop and a jangly, arpeggiated guitar figure, she elegantly describes exploring a new lover’s body: “Hands find the places where they’ve never been, to know for themselves new surfaces / And mine, they’ve got a mind of their own / I can’t leave it alone.” The way she relaxes into low notes on that last line makes it sound far more like an unembarrassed confession than a complaint. During “Break Out the Champagne,” Shires wryly relates an account of a female friend who was dumped by a dullard, only to realize that he’d never really satisfied her anyway: “I’m rock and rock and roll, and you’re golf.” Hearing Shires spell that out is invigorating.

Deluxe edition includes four bonus tracks. 2018 release, the 15th album from Manchester outfit James. Living In Extraordinary Times is the follow-up to the the chart success of 2016’s Girl At The End Of The World. Long-time collaborator Brian Eno makes a guest appearance on one track, while the artwork was crafted by noted designer Magnus Gjoen. The record touches upon contemporary fissures in society, with Tim Booth commenting: “We knew something was up when Leicester city won the league then Brexit, then Trump. It is as if we’d slipped into an alternate reality, a Philip K Dick reality. We are living in extraordinary times.” The album was produced by Mercury and Brit Award winner Charlie Andrew (whose previous work includes alt-J and Wolf Alice) and rising star Beni Giles.

Elephant Micah – Genericana (2018)

here’s a lot going on in Elephant Micah’s new album, Genericana. Time itself seems to be singer/songwriter/guitarist/band mastermind Joe O’Connell’s subject. The album feels as though it operates on multiple time scales simultaneously, like a hall of mirrors, continually folding back in on itself in surprising ways. Its songs bifurcate and split around the midway point of the album, pairing off in unstable, ever-shifting ways.

Sounds, lyrics, and themes pop up, transmogrified, across all six songs like the woozy almost-memories of dream: A bassline that feels like the heartbeat of a rambling blues riff in “Fire A” reemerges three songs later as the centerpiece of an ominous dub on “Fire B.” Or a guitar tone that bares its distorted teeth in its first appearance in “Life A” gets domesticated into a buzzing drone on “Surf B.”

In his lyrics, O’Connell tries on different personas, with surreal and self-referential musings about what would happen if he were, say, a hunter, a Quaker, or a guard (he would, respectively, catch and release a goose, “simplify this song,” and “reinvent this dance”). At moments, he comments directly on the song in real time, marking a particularly satisfying drone saying “I’d magnetize this tone” or the end of a song with “I’d listen to silence.” His voice has never sounded more like Will Oldham’s, albeit with fewer crags and burrs.

The most surprising element, though, is the revenant of Arthur Russell, whose experimental pop layerings seem to inform everything that happens on Genericana. O’Connell plays with Russell-adjacent worlds of echo in “Surf A,” and lopsided saxophone lines, synthesizer drones, and woozy tabla beats in “Fire B.” O’Connell has said that Genericana is about “exploring sound for sound’s sake,” and it shows. The results are a beautiful and intriguing sonic departure from the purer folk of past Elephant Micah albums.
