Released on the Black Friday edition of this year’s Record Store Day brouhaha, Bob Dylan’s Side Tracks is a 32-track journey into the deeper cuts of the legendary musician’s catalogue. In essence – It stands as an alternate history, a left-of-center greatest hits collection from an artist whose best songs sometimes are the stray cats and orphans left as B-sides or recording room scraps. Most everything here has appeared elsewhere on compilations like the incomparable Biograph, but by stripping the record of Dylan’s well-known songs, it provides a deeper look into his metamorphosis from nasally folk artist to his current status as a gravel-voiced elder statesman.

Side Tracks takes the listener back to the beginning, in those hallowed days of 1963 when Dylan recorded The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan. Coming off of a lackluster response to his self-titled debut, Dylan penned his own songs, creating his first instant classic and leaving plenty of tunes on the cutting room floor worthy of being on any other artist’s record. “Baby, I’m in the Mood For You” is one of those tunes, a jangly, youthful cut filled with the type of folksy optimism that would come to flourish as the ’60s progressed. Part of the charm of Side Tracks is hearing Dylan as he shifts gears from the young folker to the amphetamine-fueled rocker in the mid-60s. That transition is typified by the jump from the delightful “I’ll Keep It With Mine” to the vindictive “Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window”. Where the former has the drawl of a barroom ballad, the latter drips of anger as Dylan points fingers at an unknown lover and her keeper.

But, Dylan wasn’t set on staying in hipster mode, trading in his fizzed-out here and beat-inspired lyrics for something of a family life. Side Tracks hits those marks, segueing from an excellent live version of “Visions of Johanna” to an okay spin on “Quinn the Eskimo” from The Basement Tapes. Yes, the ’70s version of Dylan could be spotty at times, but there are some undiscovered gems, including the rolling “Watching the River Flow” and the underrated classic, “You Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere”.

Where Side Tracks does come across as lean is those years in the late ’70s and ’80s where Dylan seemed to have lost his muse and turned out album after album of soulless crap. But, even this thin period had some gems, including the wonderful “Blind Willie McTell”, a rarity that is sadly missing. Instead fans are treated to “Caribbean Wind” and “Heart of Mine”, songs that pale in comparison even to his earlier work. That it ends on the excellent “Things Have Changed” from the Wonder Boys soundtrack rights the ship, showing off the modern Dylan and his excellent band of musicians.
Ultimately, Side Tracks is a nice limited edition set for anyone looking for these songs in one place. As a history of Dylan’s less popular work, it’s a somewhat succinct showcase of the man’s career metamorphosis. Newcomers may find some new gems, but old fans would be wise to stick with what they already have.

"Footnote To The Blues" is a collection of some outstanding original songs and a few choice covers in a very contemporary blues setting provided both by members of his regular band: Brendan Canty — Bass; Neil Littman — Drums; Mark Breen — Hammond Organ, & several other exceptional players. Guy is a top rate guitarist, playing electric, acoustic, as well as, a mean slide; and has been compared to Albert Collins and Ry Cooder. This CD is making waves and has been well received by the blues press for the quality, and for the unique take on the Barrett Strong classic "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" (this, alone, is worth the price of admission). The artwork is cool and tasty too.

Home Free, also known as the Home Free Vocal Band, is a country-tinged a cappella group formed in 2000 in Mankato, Minnesota, when its members were still in their teens. Comprising singers Austin Brown, Rob Lundquist, Chris Rupp, Tim Foust, and Adam Rupp, Home Free had a large enough fan base by 2007 to pursue music full-time. Essentially structured like a traditional barbershop quartet, with a lead tenor, two harmony voices, and a bass, with the fifth member providing percussion sounds, Home Free’s big break into the public eye came when they competed on and won the fourth season of NBC’s The Sing-Off in 2013. The group self-released five albums, 2006’s From the Top, 2009’s Kickin’ It Old School, 2010’s Christmas, Vol. 1 and Christmas, Vol. 2, and 2012’s Live from the Road before signing with Columbia Records and issuing a major-label debut, Crazy Life, early in 2014. ~ Steve Leggett

A Joint Effort is a very rare psych folk album which was released out of Fredericton, New Brunswick. It was released on Little Records Ltd. and Red Rock Hotel Productions out of the University of New Brunswick. Side one is a more light folk rock side and relies on decent cover tunes; side 2 sounds like a few local browns and some smoke were added to the equation, a bit more rock and garage sound with some fuzz guitar. Only 200 copies were pressed. It is a very rare and sought-after album in the collector market. Interesting take on Oh! Canada. Came withan insert with lyrics.
"We started jamming in Rm 310, Bridges House, University of New Brunswick in 1973. The album was recorded in Fall of 1975, it was the last performance of the band, afternoon outside in front of the Student’s Union Building (all five of us blaring on acid) plus some cuts from a bar performance at the Lord Beaverbrook Hotel in Fredericton.
Rick and Grant are still in Fredericton and still play together periodically. My brother Tim is near Oshawa and he and his wife breed, raise, and train English Setters and Canadian Horses. Brian is still playing bass with Rawlins Cross and whoever, and I am entering my 4th decade soon playing for a living and having done 7 or 8 albums on my own.
Some guy in New Jersey got a copy of Final Effort from my brother and reproduced it. We each got ten copies."

    9. I Don’t Need No Doctor (4:31)
    10. Short Trip Home (4:33)

Inga Swearingen’s highly anticipated fourth album, Let Me Call This Home speaks of the yin and yang pull of home, having a longing for it, and wanting to leave it to ultimately come home again.
“Sometimes home is a place, other times it’s a person. You can long for it, or want to leave it. And songs can take you home or take you far away," says Swearingen. "There is a constant to my sense of home, and it’s also ever changing. I love the people I love, and no matter where I am, I carry them with me and I am home. But I also must leave to be able to come back. The songs on this album express this pull and yearning."
Swearingen compares the building of this album to building a house. Pouring a good foundation musically translates into putting down solid grooves on which the songs are built. The album easily interchanges time signatures and feels, giving the arrangements sophistication and intrigue, but always serving the mood and message of the song. Continuing the analogy, walls are then built with rich harmony that is sometimes complex and dissonant and other times simple and nostalgic. These song structures support well-crafted melodies that are the roofs over houses where loved ones gather and experience the many facets of life. It all comes together to create a space that invites you to kick off your shoes and stay awhile in this house of jazz, folk and blues.
The fullness of the album, six original tracks, is the collaboration between Swearingen and Jeff Miley, an imaginative, provocative LA based guitarist who co-wrote, produced and mixed much of the album. Tracks Edge of Town and Wood and Steel uncover the paradox of being away from home to really appreciate it. Swearingen’s own Find My Way Home is a melodic testament to taking what life gives her and handling it beautifully. The song is enhanced with Inga’s signature scatting and the beautiful backing vocals of Moira Smiley. The album mixes in the compelling renditions of 80’s pop hits Message in a Bottle by The Police and This City Never Sleeps by the Eurythmics, connecting the listener to the shared experience of isolation. Ray Charles’ I Don’t Need No Doctor delights with a front-porch blues romp featuring the brilliant harmonica playing of multiple Grammy-Award Winner Howard Levy. The last track Short Trip Home with music by Edgar Meyer and lyrics by Swearingen speaks to home by simply closing ones eyes to be with that person that is one’s own solace. Altogether, the album is about love, longing and finding your way home.
