“Everybody, Anyone” features 11 new songs and as before, there’s a sprinkling of guest musicians who feature on the album including Kathryn Williams, Dr Robert, Mick Talbot, Steve White, & The Average White Band’s Hamish Stuart, and unable to stay away, Paul Weller (who produced and featured on the last album) sneaks back in with a bit of piano, guitar and BVs on a couple of tracks.

The Midlands based band’s 5th studio album was recorded at Paul Weller’s Black Barn Studios in Surrey and produced by Stone Foundation founding members Neil Jones and Neil Sheasby and engineered by Charles Rees.

On January 1, 1976, Rolling Stone magazine called the debut album by West Virginian prog-rock pioneers Crack The Sky “one of year’s most impressive debuts.” Named by Rolling Stone in their 2015 list of 50 Greatest Prog Rock Albums Of All Time and in their 20 Rock Albums Rolling Stone Loved in the 1970s That You Never Heard, the magazine’s very first review in 1976 went on to compare the band to Steely Dan, 10cc, The Tubes, Ian Hunter, and the inimitable Davie Bowie. Today, some 40 years later the band will release a pair of albums, one featuring new music, Living In Reverse and Crackology, a collection of the band’s 12 career favorites, both out August 24, 2018 on Loud & Proud Records. Living In Reverse showcases 12 new genre-defying Crack tracks, while the cleverly-titled retrospective Crackology chronicles a dozen of the best re-recorded gems as culled from the band’s rich and storied 40-year catalog. Singer-songwriter and composer Gabriel Kahane has recorded critically-acclaimed albums including The Ambassador (called “one of the year’s best” by Rolling Stone); The Fiction Issue, an album of his chamber music with string quartet Brooklyn Rider; and Where Are the Arms. The staged version of The Ambassador, directed by Tony-winner John Tiffany, was presented by BAM (2014 Next Wave), CAP UCLA, and Carolina Performing Arts. As a composer of concert works, Kahane has been commissioned by Carnegie Hall, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Oregon Symphony, American Composers Orchestra, and Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, with whom he toured his WPA-inspired Gabriel’s Guide to the 48 States in 2013. He has appeared as soloist with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Colorado Symphony, the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, and A Far Cry. An avid theater artist, Kahane’s musical February House, with playwright Seth Bockley, premiered at the Public Theater in 2012 and was recorded by the StorySound label. A two-time MacDowell Colony fellow, Kahane has performed and/or recorded with artists ranging from Sufjan Stevens, Andrew Bird, Blake Mills, Chris Thile, and Brad Mehldau, to Jeremy Denk, yMusic, and John Adams. He is a graduate of Brown University and resides in Brooklyn.

Fans of guitar master Joe Bonamassa will be delighted that 2011 was such a prolific year in his career. First came the fine, rootsy Dust Bowl, then 2, the second chapter in his Black Country Communion project’s catalog. Don’t Explain, a collection of soul, blues, and jazz-oriented covers in collaboration with vocal firebrand Beth Hart marks his third entry this year. The ten-song set of blues and soul is a logical extension of her vocal contribution to “No Love on the Street” from Dust Bowl. Opening is a thoroughly raucous contemporary blues reading of Ray Charles’ “Sinner’s Prayer,” followed by a quirky version of Tom Waits’ “Chocolate Jesus,” and an unusual cover of contemporary jazz-pop singer/songwriter Melody Gardot’s “You Heart Is as Black as Night.” On this cut, a string orchestra adds a touch of perversity; it offers the impression of a femme fatale singing a Brecht-Weill number in a smoky cabaret in front of a moody string orchestra, buoyed by a brooding electric blues quintet. “For My Friends,” a Bill Withers’ tune, is a big, nasty, jagged blues number that keeps the funky groove intact. The title track, a number closely associated with Billie Holiday, falls flat. Hart tries too hard to employ Holiday’s phrasing, the string orchestrations are overblown, and Bonamassa’s crew is too reverent. This formula also mars the remake of Aretha Franklin’s “Ain’t No Way” that closes the set. Far better are readings of Etta James’ signatories “I’d Rather Go Blind,” and “Something’s Got a Hold on Me.” Hart’s emotive, throaty delivery is perfectly suited to both songs, and she resists trying to ape James’ phrasing. Since they follow one another directly, the musical difference between them also showcase’s Hart’s diverse abilities. The former is a soul burner, the latter a gospel blues. Bonamassa and band accent her every phrase with requisite rowdiness, sting, and grit. The pair’s only vocal collaboration is a burning read of Delaney & Bonnie’s “Well, Well.” With Anton Fig’s breaks and rim shots underscoring Arlan Scheirbaum’s electric piano fills, Bonamassa’s burning leads, the chunky, rhythmic foundation from guitarist Blondie Chaplin, and Carmine Rojas’ bassline, Hart and the lead guitarist trade whip-smart call and response vocals with enough raw country-soul to bring the song to a new audience. While not a perfect recording, Don’t Explain is a good one, whose strengths are numerous enough to warrant a second go round.
