Gospel music/ Spiritual Music is composed and performed for many purposes, including religious, ceremonial or indeed the sheer revelry of the ‘power’ of the Lord!…. Unabashed dominant vocals (often with strong use of harmony and Christian lyrics) can be traced to the early 17th century ( it was a way of enduring the hardships of Slavery ) with roots in the black oral tradition, these hymns and sacred songs were often repeated in a call and response fashion. Most of the churches relied on hand clapping and foot stomping as rhythmic accompaniment. These driving tribal like rhythms were nothing less than the start of Rock ’n’ Roll….. A young Elvis Presley used to attend the black congregations because he knew at that early age where the real spirit was and the great Martin Luther King in his final ever public speaking referred with great passion to the old ‘negro spirituals’.

The New Zeitgeist – Myths and Mortals (2018)
320 kbps | 102 MB | LINKS
On their new album, Myths and Mortals, the duo explores the origins of oral folk tradition touching upon outlaw and rock ballads, drawing heavily from suspenseful and captivating stories of fairies, earth, and work that call into our current socio-political times. Featuring Austin City Limits Hall of Fame steel musician Lloyd Maines, Myths and Mortals calls from the deep to weary worn trails of spirits lingering. The New Zeitgeist shares: “Our sense of what it is to be presently human not only involves our mortal stories but also our roots from beyond.”
James Edwyn & the Borrowed Band – High Fences (2017)
320 kbps | 90 MB | LINKS
Almost four years since the release of their debut album, the Glasgow sextet, James Edwyn & The Borrowed Band, return with a solid and harder-edged set of guitar-driven alt-country, surging out of the starting gate with Passing San Ysidro, Neil McDonald laying down a muscular beat. Things slow down slightly with the five-minute Try Not To Think of Now, Ronnie Gilmour’s electric guitar and Scott Keenan keys providing the bedrock behind Edwyn’s keening vocals.
The slouching groove of the bluesy drawled speak-sing Get Back Up has hints of the Band before they flesh out the sound on the stand out Pushing Statues, a cosmic country coloured shuffle that, calling the late Bap Kennedy to mind, brings in a brass section and Tim Davidson on pedal steel. The brass boys also hang around for the mid-tempo swayer Quoting Sagan with its chorus surges and soulful groove, while, in direct contrast, Never In A While strips everything down to just Edwyn on acoustic guitar.
With its chiming guitars and gentle melodic sway, Starlet is a particular low key highlight, Emma Joyce’s harmonies adding extra colour, the album ending on two ebb and flow slow waltzers with Burning Man and, Gilmour’s plangent background guitar underscoring Edwyn’s soulful broken-spirit delivery, Doubts.
