Η πρώτη… μεγάλου μήκους, βινυλιακή κυκλοφορία των Iota είναι γεγονός. Λέμε για ένα γκρουπ σύγχρονης (ελληνικής) τζαζ (ας το πούμε έτσι), το οποίο αποτελούν οι Τάσος Πέππας ντραμς, Γιώργος Χριστόπουλος κιθάρες, Γιάννης Γκέκης μπάσο, Ανδρέας Πολυζωγόπουλος τρομπέτα και Κίμων Τσομίδης sound designer – μουσικοί γνωστοί είτε μέσα από τις προσωπικές δουλειές τους είτε από τα γκρουπ, από τα οποία έχουν ήδη περάσει (ή εξακολουθούν να παίζουν), όπως είναι τα Υπόγεια Ρεύματα, οι Chewing Gunκ.ά.

Το “Part of Something”[Ikaros Records, 2018] δεν είναι ένα τυπικό τζαζ άλμπουμ – αν και οι λέξεις «τυπικό» και «τζαζ» ενδεχομένως να μη λειτουργούν μαζί, αν υποστηρίξουμε κι εμείς την άποψη πως η jazz, από τη φύση της, είναι εκείνη η μουσική που σπάει τους τύπους (πρώτα-πρώτα τους αισθητικούς).

Πιο πολύ έχουμε να κάνουμε μ’ έναν ήχο, που τοποθετείται μέσα σ’ ένα περιβάλλον ή καλύτερα που αλληλεπιδρά με το περιβάλλον του. Είναι, λοιπόν, το sound designπολύ σημαντικό εδώ – ένας σχεδιασμός που στηρίζεται φυσικά στα ηλεκτρονικά, έτσι όπως εκείνα διαμόρφωσαν τις πρώτες σχετικές απόπειρες στις προηγούμενες δεκαετίες, τη future-jazz του Toshinori Kondo και των IMA, μα ακόμη και το trip-hop, όπως και άλλα μεταγενέστερα (και πάντα electro) genres. Από κει και κάτω το funk, το rock ή ό,τι άλλο είναι τα απλά, επιμέρους συστατικά, που θα χρωματίσουν, έτσι ή αλλιώς, το κάθε track.

Πέραν λοιπόν του γενικότερου… περιβάλλοντος, που εδώ είναι κάτι βασικό (το επαναλαμβάνω), έχουμε την τρομπέτα του Πολυζωγόπουλου, μέσω της οποίας εμφανίζεται το μελωδικό πρόσωπο των Iota, τις κιθάρες του Χριστόπουλου, που και αυτές, είτε σε φάση «χρωματισμών» είτε πιο μπροστά, κάνουν άψογη δουλειά, δίχως, πάντως, να αγνοούν τη γενικότερη… ambient κατάσταση, με το μπάσο-ντραμς να αναδεικνύεται, εννοείται, ως η πρωτεύουσα ρυθμική μηχανή, πάνω στην οποία θα πατήσει όλο το υπόλοιπο οικοδόμημα.

Εξαιρετικά κομμάτια, συνθέσεις, ακούγονται στο “Part of Something”, όπως είναι το “Certain days” από την πρώτη πλευρά ή το “Different story” και το “Out there” από τη δεύτερη, γεγονός που δείχνει το ταλέντο, οπωσδήποτε, των μουσικών, αλλά και τη γενικότερη δουλειά που έχει γίνει στο… χαρτί, στις πρόβες, στο στούντιο κ.λπ.

It makes so much sense, it’s a wonder this took so long. An album of ABBA covers by camp queen Cher is a match made in pop-music heaven. The ostensible inspiration for the set was her cameo in Mamma Mia 2, where she delivered a faithful rendition of the timeless ballad “Fernando”. But who needs a reason to justify 10 new takes on ABBA’s biggest hits? From the piano vamp of “Dancing Queen” that opens the album, it’s clear nobody is trying to reinvent the wheel here. These tracks, FM radio staples for 40-plus years already, are given a spit shine and updated production values, but they’re otherwise straightforward takes that make clear the producers’ (and the performer’s) reverence for the source material. Only at the end does the formula change: “One of Us”, a heartbreaking standout from the Swedish group’s final album, The Visitors, is stripped down to strings and piano, leaving only Cher’s voice to channel all of the emotion from the devastating lyrics.

The eighth album from Marissa Nadler, For My Crimes, is the sound of guilt giving way to truth. The songs stare down the dark realization that love may not be enough to keep two people together through distance and differing needs. By asking these difficult questions about her relationships, Nadler has found a stronger sense of self and a sharper voice as both a songwriter and a vocalist, culminating in her most evocative entry in an already impressive discography. Following the release of 2016’s acclaimed Strangers, Nadler’s new marriage was put to the test as she left the Boston area on tour. She wrote throughout 2017 about this tension, and ended up with three times as many songs as she needed. But after reviewing the demos with her co-producers Justin Raisen and Lawrence Rothman, Nadler wrote a flurry of tight but no less intense new songs in the week before arriving at Rothman’s Laurel Canyon studio, House of Lux, in early January. She considered it a challenge to herself, applying new strategies and structures to the craft of “slow music” she’s honed over the last 15 years. From that group of songs came nearly all of the singles on For My Crimes, some of the most indelible of Nadler’s career. Bolstering the intimacy of these songs is the strong feminine energy that defined their recording. Between Rothman’s fluidity with both gender and genre (as heard on his 2017 album The Book of Law), and Raisen’s track record of successful collaborations with strong women (Angel Olsen, Kim Gordon, Charli XCX), Nadler felt empowered to explore without judgment in the studio. With the exception of a single saxophonist, every player on the album is a woman of notable pedigree and distinct style, many of whom have played with Nadler over the years. In addition to cameos by Angel Olsen and Kristin Kontrol, Sharon Van Etten sings backup on “I Can’t Listen to Gene Clark Anymore” and “Lover Release Me.” Mary Lattimore joins on harp for “Are You Really Gonna Move to the South,” while the great experimental multi-instrumentalist Janel Leppin plays strings throughout the record.
