Όχι καθημερινή περίπτωση (για την κυκλοφορία ο λόγος) ή, τέλος πάντων, όχι και τόσο συνηθισμένη (το ίδιο λέμε!).

Το “Time is a Blind Guide” είχε κυκλοφορήσει το 2015 από την ECM, ενορχηστρωμένο, από τον ντράμερ και συνθέτη Thomas Strønen, για τσέλο (LucyRailton), κοντραμπάσο (Ole Morten Vågan), κρουστά (Siv ØyunnKjenstad, Steinar Mossige), πιάνο (Kit Downes) και βιολί (HåkonAase). Τώρα (2018), ο Strønen επανέρχεται στο ίδιο έργο, αλλάζοντας τίτλο (“Lucus”), τίτλους των tracks και διάρκειες (όπως διαβάζω στο site της εταιρείας), παίζοντας ξανά ο ίδιος ντραμς (εννοείται), διατηρώντας τον βιολιστή, την τσελίστρια και τον κοντραμπασίστα, αφαιρώντας τους επιπλέον κρουστούς και… προσλαμβάνοντας στη θέση τού πιανίστα KitDownesτην Ιαπωνίδα Ayumi Tanaka. Επιπλέον, η πρώτη εκδοχή ήταν στουντιακή (Rainbow Studio, Oslo), ενώ η τωρινή live (Auditorio Stelio Molo RSI, Lugano).

Εντάξει, προσωπικά δεν μπορώ να καταλάβω τι παραπάνω βρήκε ο Manfred Eicher στην παρούσα εκδοχή [ΕCM / AN Music, 2018] και δέχτηκε να ξαναηχογραφηθεί το έργο, με μισοαλλαγμένη την παλαιά line-up, αλλά, οπωσδήποτε, κάτι θα βρήκε. Εγώ πάντως δε βρίσκω τίποτα... βασικά, γιατί δεν έχω ακούσει την προηγούμενη εκδοχή και άρα θα γράψω για το “Time is a Blind Guide” σαν να είναι, τώρα, η πρώτη φορά.

Επικεντρώνομαι στην πιανίστρια και λέω πως οι συνθέσεις του Strønen (και η μία των Strønen / Vågan / Aase) είναι «τοποθετημένες» πάνω στην Ιαπωνίδα, η οποία αποδίδει και αυτοσχεδιάζει με τόλμη και φαντασία, δημιουργώντας εντατικές πιανιστικές καταστάσεις, τις οποίες… απαλύνουν, με μέτρο, τα έγχορδα – που και αυτά οδηγούνται προς την ίδια contemporaryπεριοχή. Μάλιστα, θα έλεγα, με το φόβο να διαψευστώ (επειδή, το ξαναλέω, δεν έχω ακούσει την προηγούμενη version), πως η παρουσία τής Tanaka προσθέτει στο άκουσμα και μια γενικότερη, αλλά λεπτή, folk σκιά, μετατρέποντας το “Time is a Blind Guide” ίσως σε κάτι πιο… φιλικό προς τον ακροατή.

Η νέα, διάρκεια των συνθέσεων, που είναι 5λεπτη κατά μέσο όρο και βεβαίως η δυναμική πιανιστική ακολουθία σε συνδυασμό με τον… υποβολιμαίο ρόλο των εγχόρδων, προσδίδουν στο “Time is a Blind Guide” μιαν ισορροπημένη ομορφιά, που, γενικώς, θα έλεγα ότι χαρακτηρίζεται (αυτή η ομορφιά) από τις ηχητικές μετατοπίσεις ανάμεσα στο «σκοτάδι» και το «φως». Τόσο απλό...

Though American, Amory Kane was based in the U.K. when he recorded this, his second album; Fairport Convention bassist Dave Pegg, in fact, is one of the accompanists. It’s a somewhat drifting, laid-back singer/songwriter effort that doesn’t strike out with much force or distinction. There’s a bit of Donovan-like wistfulness, as well as something of a utopian hippie-era brotherhood feel à la “Get Together,” which is in fact covered for one of the LP’s tracks. But the tunes are on the bland side, and the songs sometimes have an awkward wordiness. Bits of pastoral period psychedelic touches float around the arrangements, like ghostly wind noises, hand percussion, and eerily reverbed plucks, scrapes, and licks. Even by the lowered expectations folk-rock-psychedelic collectors might bring to very obscure records such as this, however, it isn’t anything special.

Over 20 years is a long time to wait for a musician to release their debut album, but Paul McCann has finally decided to walk away from the long grass. In fairness, he has raised his head above the reeds and weeds before, having been a member of Cavan group The Plan, as well as Áine Cahill’s backing band. Two EP releases (2015’s The Magician, 2017’s Beginning to End) eased his solo music into the world, but it is with his debut offering that McCann comes into his own. The style is classic power pop, and while that may be determinedly old-fashioned, Here Comes the Rapture has flawless influences. Across 10 exuberant songs that consummately reference bands such as Jellyfish, The Raspberries, Fountains of Wayne, Big Star and Apples in Stereo, McCann delivers a collection of taut tunes that bear all the hallmarks of frustrating teenage years spent dealing with unreciprocated romance. “I’m in love with a girl but she don’t have time for me,” sings McCann in It’s Only a Fantasy, one of the numerous dingers here that well and truly hum.
