ERNA ROT: Angst & Weltschmerz / :young german jazz [ACT Music + Vision, 2018]

Αυτό το… young german jazz, που παίζει ως υπότιτλος στο “Angst & Weltschmerz”, της γερμανίδας τραγουδοποιού Erna Rot, όσο να ’ναι προβληματίζει. Το λέω γιατί το άλμπουμ δεν είναι και τόσο jazz ή και καθόλου jazz, ίσως, για ορισμένους. Τι είναι; Θα σας πω. Τραγούδια γράφει η Rot, που έχουν περισσότερο αμερικάνικα λαϊκά ηχοχρώματα. Κάτι από country και bluegrass (άκου το “Loreley”), ενίοτε και με μιαν αίσθηση swinging (εκεί όπου μπορεί να εδράζεται κι αυτό το… jazz του υποτίτλου).

Οι συνθέσεις και τα τραγούδια της Rotείναι συμπαθητικά (τα λόγια, σημειωτέον, είναι στη γερμανική γλώσσα), ενώ διαθέτουν και ωραία παιξίματα – άπαντα από μιαν ομάδα μουσικών, που δείχνει να το χαίρεται και να το γιορτάζει. Η Erna Rot είναι στη φωνή και στο glockenspiel, με την ομάδα να συμπληρώνεται από τους Simon Doetsch τρομπέτα, φλούγκελχορν, ακορντεόν, Peter Kowal κιθάρες, Stefan Rey κοντραμπάσο και Felix Günther ντραμς.

Στο “Angst & Weltschmerz” υπάρχουν πάντως τραγούδια που ξεχωρίζουν και αυτά είναι μάλλον τα λιγότερο jazzy, όπως η μπαλάντα “Gelohnt hat es sich nicht”, το ελαφρώς rock “P wie P”, το bluesy “Der traum ist aus”, το… κανονικώς rock “Abbitte” (με την πολύ ωραία κιθάρα) και κάποια ακόμη.

Σε γενικές γραμμές, το άλμπουμ είναι αρκετά καλό, για το είδος και το στυλ του, και απολύτως προσεγμένο σε κάθε λεπτομέρειά του.

JIN JIM: Weisse Schatten / : young german jazz [ACT Music + Vision, 2018]

Νομίζω πως, συγκριτικώς, πρόκειται για τη μεγαλύτερη έκπληξη που μας επιφύλαξε η ACT μέσα στο 2018. Αυτό το καταπληκτικό δεύτερο άλμπουμ των Jin Jim (αλλά πρώτο τους για την ACT), μιας… young german jazz μπάντας, αποτελούμενης εκ των DanielManrique-Smithδιάφοροι τύποι φλάουτων, Johann May ηλεκτρική κιθάρα, BenTai Trawinskiμπάσο και Nico Stallmannντραμς.

Οι Jin Jim, σ’ αυτό το δεύτερο CD τους ερμηνεύουν βασικά δικό τους υλικό –αν εξαιρέσεις τη διασκευή τους στο “House ofthe king” των Focus(Jan Akkerman) από το 1971– και… θριαμβεύουν.

Δεν ξέρω αν είναι το setting εκείνο που τους κάνει να ξεχωρίζουν –αν και τούτο, το setting εννοώ, δεν είναι συνηθισμένο– εκείνο που ξέρω (και ακούω) είναι πως οι Γερμανοί είναι έξοχοι συνθέτες (και φυσικά οργανοπαίκτες) έτοιμοι να προσφέρουν το καλύτερο σ’ αυτό το… μεταίχμιο της jazz με το rock, καθώς ακούγονται άλλοτε σαν κιθαριστικό ροκ γκρουπ και άλλοτε σαν μιαν όλο φωτιά τζαζ μπάντα. Βεβαίως, στις περισσότερες των περιπτώσεων τα στυλ ανακατεύονται με τον τρόπο όχι των… Jethro Tull, ούτε των Focus, μα μ’ έναν δικό τους, πιο προσωπικό και εν τέλει ιδιοσυγκρασιακό, που μπορεί να δανείζεται στοιχεία και από την κλασική, τη folk, ακόμη και τη latin, πριν ολοκληρωθεί σ’ αυτό το εντυπωσιακό χαρμάνι.

Δεν έχει νόημα να γράφουμε… κοσμητικά επίθετα, ούτε να επιμένουμε για την αξία μιας εγγραφής, όταν τούτη είναι αυταπόδεικτη.

EMILE PARISIEN QUINTET: Sfumato live in Marciac [ACT Music + Vision, 2018]

Με συνεχή άλμπουμ τα τελευταία χρόνια στην ACT, o 36χρονος γάλλος συνθέτης και σοπράνο σαξοφωνίστας Emile Parisienείναι οπωσδήποτε ένα μεγάλο όνομα. Και αυτό δεν το αποδεικνύουν μόνον οι δίσκοι του, αλλά και οι ζωντανές παραστάσεις του – όπως αυτή στο χωριό Marciac της νοτιοδυτικής Γαλλίας, τον Αύγουστο του 2017, στο γνωστό τοπικό jazzfestival.

Εκεί βρέθηκε το κουιντέτο τού Emile Parisien (JoachimKühn πιάνο, ManuCodjia κιθάρες, Simon Tailleu κοντραμπάσο, MárioCosta ντραμς οι υπόλοιποι τέσσερις) και μαζί του μια τριάδα top-guests (Wynton Marsalis τρομπέτα, VincentPeirani ακορντεόν, Michel Portal κλαρινέτο), που εκπόρθησαν τη σκηνή με το εκπληκτικό και… ανελέητο παίξιμό τους.  Μάλιστα, από το συγκεκριμένο live δεν προέκυψε μόνον ένα πρώτης τάξεως CD, μα κι ένα DVD(εμπεριέχεται στο ίδιο πακέτο) με τρία παραπάνω tracks. Οπότε η απόλαυση είναι εις διπλούν και βεβαίως πλήρης στον απόλυτο βαθμό!

Κατ’ αρχάς να πούμε πως όταν στο σχήμα ενός μουσικού, όπως και στους guests που σπεύδουν να συνδράμουν σε μια παράστασή του, βλέπεις ονόματα της κλάσης των JoachimKühn, WyntonMarsalis και Michel Portalαντιλαμβάνεσαι αμέσως πως, εδώ, κάτι πολύ σημαντικό συμβαίνει. Και όντως, γιατί ό,τι ακούγεται και φαίνεται στο “Sfumato live in Marciac” δεν είναι εύκολο να περιγραφεί.

Με υλικό του Parisienκαι του Kühn και με μία μόλις version (στο κλασικό “Temptationrag” του Henry Lodge, στο οποίον έχει εκπληκτική παρουσία ο Wynton Marsalis), το live αυτό του Emile Parisien είναι αποδεικτικό το πού μπορεί να φθάσουν μερικοί μεγάλοι παίκτες, αν βρεθούν στον κατάλληλο τόπο και χρόνο. Δε θέλω να πω πως, εδώ, έχουμε να κάνουμε με κάποια… συγκυρία (κάτι τέτοιο θα ακουγόταν σφόδρα υποτιμητικό, για μουσικούς αυτής της κλάσης), αλλά να… θα πρέπει να συντρέχουν και άλλοι λόγοι (τεχνικοί, παραγωγής κ.λπ.), προκειμένου μια τέτοια ηχογράφηση να χαρακτηριστεί «αναφοράς».

Πολύ μεγάλες μουσικές, από πολύ μεγάλους παίκτες, που είναι ικανοί να παίξουν τα πάντα και γι’ αυτό αποθεώνονται. Τίποτ’ άλλο!

John R. Miller is a well-known singer-songwriter from West Virginia that has been a major influence on many Kentucky musicians. Miller’s work with Prison Book Club caught the attention of a young Kentuckian by the name of Tyler Childers.John R. Miller’s debut album with his band The Engine Lights, The Trouble You Follow (due out August 31, 2018 via Lexington, KY’s Emperor Records), was created and recorded in about four days at the home of engineer Paul Cogle in Falling Waters, West Virginia, not far from where Miller grew up and still lived whenever not on the road with a band. Miller had decided that it was time to say goodbye to the place he’d called home most of his life, and that he needed to put the songs on a record before he did.

For The Trouble You Follow, Miller gathered a few of his closest musician friends from the area and set to work. Shepherdstown, West Virginia drummer Danny Tait laid the foundation, giving the record its undeniable backbone. Matt Metz, an old friend and bandmate from The Fox Hunt, played mandolin, employing his bluegrass background to add a crackling percussive and melodic layer to the songs. Harrisonburg, Virginia musician Jason Summer brought his own whirling, left-of-center style of pedal steel to the instrumentation, and Chloe Edmonstone of the string and Locust Honey rounded it all out, lending country fiddle and vocal harmonies. Miller’s thumb-picked acoustic guitar hovers near the center, driving the tunes, or at least steering the car. The resulting sound, a swampy, groove-heavy mix of bluegrass, alt-country, and rock’n’roll, deftly complements the songs themselves while allowing them to breathe on their own.

Miller grew up in Hedgesville, a rural town with one stoplight just on the outskirts of Martinsburg, West Virginia. The area itself is beautiful: mostly farmland at the base of mountains leading into the great beyond of West Virginia’s vast wilderness. What was beyond those mountains was a mystery to him as a kid, and they only fueled his imagination and desire for travel. In the other direction, no mystery remained: chain stores and restaurants stretched as far as the eye could see. This is where Miller started writing and performing songs, mostly about the desire to leave a place that he as a teenager felt was uniquely toxic. Through music, he and his friends were able to connect with an outside world in a way they felt only they understood. This was before social media, before you could explore the world over the internet, the last days of unquenchable geographical curiosity.

“A lot of this record is about leaving or being left, and everything in between,” Miller says. “There’s some guilt that follows you when you leave home in search of the life you want to be living. People you love you have to say goodbye to, unsure when you’ll be able to see them again. A lot of them who maybe would also like to leave where they are, but are unable to risk what they have in order to do so. There are a lot of conflicting feelings in these songs.”

In retrospect, where Miller felt conflicted about the place he grew up was what drove him toward the beauty of music and collaboration in the first place. The traveling that followed put home firmly into perspective, and has made Miller now deeply appreciate the place that raised him, though much of it is no longer what it was.

A co-founder of both The Fox Hunt, a high-energy old-time string band, and Prison Book Club, a “loud and spirited” rock’n’roll band, as he puts it, Miller spent much of his time living in Shepherdstown and on the road, crafting a blend of country, punk, blues, and folk – music he has now performed in nearly all 50 states, Canada, Ireland, the UK, Japan, and Europe. Music that has been covered by several notable artists, including Tyler Childers, who covered Miller’s song, “Coming Down,” on his 2018 re-release of Live on Red Barn Radio I & II.

Keeping busy within the world of music over the last decade, Miller has appeared twice on NPR’s Mountain Stage with The Fox Hunt. As a bassist, he has toured extensively with the Hackensaw Boys, Locust Honey, William Matheny, and many others. He has shared the stage with a wide range of artists, from Greensky Bluegrass to Future Islands to Lucero. He has also been a featured songwriter and performer on the Travelin’ Appalachians Revue, West Virginia’s traveling artist collective.

Obscure British singer/songwriter Bill Fay made a couple of albums in the early ’70s that matched Dylanesque songwriting with unusual arrangements. Fay had actually done his first single, “Some Good Advice”/”Screams in the Ears,” for Deram back in 1967, produced by early Donovan co-manager Peter Eden. The single introduced his characteristic downbeat melodies and scrambled poetic lyrics, though with somewhat more pop-oriented production and melodies, than those heard on his albums.

8 years after the last Pavlov’s Dog studio album the “Prodigal Dreamer” David Surkamp once again shares his poetic songs and musical tales with us. For a band that releases about one album per decade a new album is truly an extraordinary event. “Prodigal Dreamer” for David makes a special dream come true. The album contains a collection of songs that came together over the years, each one specifically picked and relating to a personal story. New compositions of the past eight years combine with just lately accomplished pearls of the past decades to a harmonious whole. Finally, the artwork closes the circle to Pampered Menial, the album that started it some 40 years ago. “Prodigal Dreamer” was recorded by method of room-miking. In this process the band performs together in one room, without clicktrack or similar appliances. The performance hereby is captured “for real”. This recording method is an art for itself that today only few sound engineers are in control of. Paul Hennerich is an expert in this field, handling e.g. broadcasts and recordings of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra or monitoring renowned jazz projects. This procedure mostly passes on any post-processings. In this way an unequalled authenticity, warmth, dynamic and “in real character” is achieved, that interpret the sensitive songs on “Prodigal Dreamer” also soundwise in an appropriate way… and give the listener the feeling of being right in the middle.
