Tom Jones & Jools Holland – Tom Jones & Jools Holland (2004)
320 kbps | 141 MB | LINKS
In a recording career dating back 40 years, the LP Tom Jones & Jools Holland may be the best album Tom Jones has ever made. From the beginning, the singer has displayed his versatility, ably handling everything from the loopy ‘60s pop of “What’s New, Pussycat?” to a ‘70s and ‘80s stint as a country singer before becoming the willing mouthpiece of dance-rock mavens like Art of Noise in the ‘90s and beyond. That adaptability has seen him through ups and downs, from concert halls to lounges in Las Vegas and back. But Jools Holland, the rambunctious barrelhouse/boogie-woogie piano player who has found renown as a TV host in Great Britain (Later with Jools Holland) seems to have located Jones’ true center as a performer by accompanying him on this collection of old jump blues, R&B, rockabilly, and blues (with a few originals thrown in). Jones’ voice is given a strong echo, the better to enable his version of the sound of Big Joe Williams and Big Joe Turner, among others. His talent has always been sounding comfortable no matter what he was singing, but Jones really sounds like he’s having fun here, making like Jerry Lee Lewis on “It’ll Be Me” and “End of the Road,” for instance, or like Larry Williams on “Slow Down.” He is the most joyous of bluesmen addressing “Good Morning Blues” (to which Holland appends Count Basie’s “One O’Clock Jump” ) and “St. James Infirmary,” and he and Holland revive Huey “Piano” Smith on “Roberta.” In his reincarnations of the ‘90s and ‘00s, Jones has been trying to sound as current as possible. Holland’s insight was to see that the 64-year-old singer was ready to investigate the roots of his soulful voice, and the pianist earns his co-billing by leading some rocking ensembles through arrangements that support the singer in his triumphant reclamation of his earliest influences.
Ali Hassan Kuban – From Nubia to Cairo (1988, Reissue 2018)
Ali Hassan Kuban became the world’s most renowned Nubian musician on the strength of this 1988 release, now newly reissued by German’s Piranha label. From Nubia to Cairo is essentially a hits compilation consisting of tracks recorded in Cairo’s legendary Delta Sound studio sometime after 1978 and released on massively bootlegged cassettes that sold millions of copies.
Born in the village of Gotha in 1929, Kuban imported Nubian folk traditions into Cairo’s urban environs. He began adding Western instruments — horns, guitars, keyboards — to his band in the ’50s, discovered James Brown in the ’60s, and styled himself a “Nubian soul” singer thereafter. Old, old, old pentatonic melodies get off on a sinuous good foot on tracks that made Kuban…
…the toast of the Cairo wedding circuit, where he wrangled multiple bands containing dozens of musicians.
There’s no denying Kuban’s pop savvy. From Nubia to Cairo kicks off with the laid-back, stop-time groove “Sukar, Sukar, Sukar”—i.e., “sugar, sugar sugar.” The horn chart splits the difference between military bands and J.B.’s Famous Flames, while the lyrics echo the Archies. “Om Schar Asmar Medaffar” contains the sort of stately Nubian march Sun Ra extrapolated in his personal Egyptian mythology. Other highlights include “Hanwil Tanza”‘s sublime serpentine melody and the brassy snap of “Amira.”
Sadly, Egypt’s repressive treatment of the Nubian ethnic minority has done no favors for Kuban’s musical legacy. He continued to play weddings, toured internationally, and released three more albums until his death in 2001. From Nubia to Cairo remains his recorded apex, as well as one of the more potent links to ancient Nubian culture.

Catrin Finch & Seckou Keita – SOAR (2018)

Professor Longhair – Rock ‘N’ Roll Gumbo (1974,Reissue 2006)
320 kbps | 104 MB | LINKS
Recorded in 1974, this album almost never saw the light of day. Fortunately, the master tapes were found and the album was released posthumously. Professor Longhair was a giant in the New Orleans music community, but had not recorded in over ten years when he was convinced to start playing again. From the opening riffs, one can understand the stature of Professor Longhair as a great pianist — he demonstrates that he is equally at home playing rhumba boogie, blues songs, and calypso. He plays New Orleans standards (many penned by himself), but what makes this recording a classic is the chance to hear him play with guitarist Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown. The interplay of these music veterans is mesmerizing. The piano playing is breathtaking, and has a percussive quality unlike any other player before or since. It is hard to believe that Professor Longhair languished in obscurity for so many years after hearing the jubilance of “Mardi Gras in New Orleans,” a song that will have you tapping your feet and hands as if you were in the parade. This album is essential for fans of New Orleans music and those aspiring to be rock & roll pianists.

VA – Easy Rider – Music From The Soundtrack [2CD Deluxe Edition] (1969/2004)
FLAC | 639 MB | LINKS
This Harley hog of a reissue takes the original soundtrack and adds an entire disc of similarly emblematic anthems of the era to form the ultimate period piece! Includes Don’t Bogart Me Fraternity of Man; The Ballad of Easy Rider Roger McGuinn; Pushin’ Too Hard Seeds; If You Want to Be a Bird Holy Modal Rounders; Time Has Come Today Chambers Brothers; If 6 Were 9 Jimi Hendrix, and more.
After 1968’s political assassinations and street riots, the once vaunted idealism the 60’s went south for good in 1969. The artistic metaphors for the unraveling of The Age of Aquarius encompassed variously Gimme Shelter, the documentary of The Stones’ disastrous Altamont free concert, and Dennis Hopper’s idealism-gone-sour road picture, Easy Rider. It’s rock score was an instant counter-culture classic, a collection anchored by Steppenwolf’s road anthem chestnut “Born to Be Wild” and its cautionary “The Pusher,” a song that underscored the film’s frank portrayal of drug use (one that’s given a more lighthearted hearing on Fraternity of Man’s “Don’t Bogart Me”). Other standouts include the Holy Modal Rounders’ loopy “If You Want To Be A Bird” and Byrds’ leader Roger McGuinn’s “Ballad of Easy Rider” and faithful cover of Dylan’s “It’s Alright , Ma (I’m Only Bleeding).” Licensing concerns kept the soundtrack from compact disc until 2000, but this deluxe, slip-cased double-disc set not only expands on that edition’s shortcoming (returning The Band’s version of “The Weight” to its rightful place), but adds an additional 18 emblematic tracks “inspired” by the film and its turbulent times. While some of these are either a bit too obvious (The Seeds’ “Pushin’ Too Hard”) or themeatically inappropriate (The Who’s “I Can See For Miles”), gems like Thunderclap Newman’s haunting “Something In the Air” make it more inviting. –Jerry McCulley
