I always love it whenever people make me aware of new bands that I should review. Months ago, Joie Davidson tipped me off to an up-and-coming band that was performing in the area. After checking out the band’s Facebook page and listening to a few song clips, I was immediately impressed by the Nashville trio and simply had to hear more.

My copy of “Beauty & Sadness” by Wildeyes arrived last week, and I have been totally enjoying the beautiful harmonies, stellar musicianship and strong songwriting featured on the 11 tracks from the debut release.

For me, the vibe of the new album was reminiscent of Lone Justice’s 1986 album “Shelter.” Led by Maria McKee’s passionate vocals and memorable tracks such as “I Found Love” and “Dixie Storms,” the sophomore effort by the Los Angeles-based band received a heavy dose of playing time during my senior year of college.

Just like McKee, lead singer Emily Kohavi’s stirring voice adds depth and meaning to the songs possessing elements of folk, country and Americana.

“Tennessee Is Alive” opens the set with a cautionary tale about protecting the identity and charm of a small town from outsiders wanting to capitalize and cash in for personal greed.

For me, the strength of the album is showcased on three stunning tracks focused on the pain of lost love.

The hurt and regret left behind after a dissolved relationship fuel the sadness of “Nothing Less, Nothing More.” “Empty Love” is a desperate declaration of the emptiness experienced after having your heart drained of love by someone unable or unwilling to reciprocate. “Dying Slow” is another lovely and tragic track about attempting to discover direction and purpose after losing faith as love gradually fades, leaving only emotional scars and self-doubt.

“Sunday” offers a heavenly promise of hope on this infectious number that speaks of a spiritual renewing of the mind, body and soul through the inspiration of what a Sunday morning delivers.

“Dance with the Devil” serves as the darker counterpart to “Sunday” with its poignant confessional regarding the struggles of resisting temptation and the guilt that weighs heavy on the heart.

“I Won’t Go” softly closes the set with Kohavi’s dreamy vocals being graciously supported by acoustic guitar and violin on this arrangement about sacrificing everything for the one you love.

If you didn’t get the right gift this Christmas, treat yourself to this engaging new album from a band that is poised to make it big very soon.

Baba Commandant & the Mandingo Band exploded onto the international stage with 2015 debut Juguya, a fiery Afrobeat release that introduced the non-Burkinabé world to the distinctive growl of Baba Commandant – né Mamadou Sanou – and the tight grooves of his ensemble. On sophomore release Siri Ba Kele, that growl is back, and so is the musicianship, but the sounds here are very different. The band has stripped away much of the brass and heavy fuzz in favor of cooler aesthetics with just as intense of an impact.
In addition to singing, Sanou plays the stringed n’goni, and leads a band made up of Issouf Diabate on guitar, Massibo Taragna on bass, Mohamed Sana on drums, and Sami Kimpe on balafon. Each of the tracks is a dynamic mix of strings,…

…percussion, and voice that lends a fresh perspective to West African mandingue popular music traditions of the 1970s. “Logo Fo Djelba” opens the album with clear, hand-pounded beats soon joined by Sanou’s rallying calls, more percussion, and a string-based melody. Diabate’s nimble guitar work stuns, light riffs that seem impossibly clean for the speed and complexity of them.

Driven by strings, mid-tempo “Siraba Kele” is a perfect example of the group’s unique, polyrhythmic synchrony. Each instrument rolls along a slightly different path, causing them to come together in different ways at different points in the song. Diabate again stands out as having a particular technique and feeling to his playing, weaving in and out of the ostinati around him with psychedelic spirit. For as much repetition as there is, the organic variations make it a captivating and unpredictable piece, one of the album’s top highlights.

While many of Juguya‘s tracks came in a manageable size for the casual listener, the jams on Siri Ba Kele range from six to nine-and-a-half minutes, the longest an expansion on “Siguisso”, a track that, in its original form on Juguya, clocked in at less than four gentle minutes. The version on Siri Ba Kele pours forward in a rush of percussion and strings, held down by the woodsy timbre of the balafon. On “Keleya”, the band takes a simplified approach to Moussa Doumbia’s 1970s funk release that makes it fit perfectly on this album while honoring the bold color of the original with Diabate’s wavy playing style. The album ends on “Mantcha Mantcha”, whose bombastic opening drums lead into warm lines of strings and voice.

Siri Ba Kele is a solid sophomore release for Baba Commandant and the Mandingo Band, doing an admirable job in following up the stellar Juguya. Its subtleties and track lengths make it less of a party album and more of a cerebral experience – or an above-average background soundtrack. The band’s skills, though, are undeniable, and the music high-quality. Siri Ba Kele may not be the most accessible of the band’s oeuvre, but it is well worth the work to understand.

Υπάρχει μια θρυλική ελληνική ταινία –ό,τι κατορθώθηκε να γυριστεί και να προβληθεί κάποτε– που την έχουν δει ελάχιστοι. Είναι Η Μικρή Παρέλαση, ένα σουρεαλιστικό / παράλογο φιλμ γυρισμένο στο δεύτερο μισό της δεκαετίας του ’50 (1956-57) από τον πολύ σημαντικό (ποιητή και άλλα διάφορα) Τέο Σαλαπασίδη. Στην ταινία είχε ανακατευτεί και ο (ποιητής επίσης) Μιχάλης Κατσαρός, ενώ πρωταγωνιστούσε ο «πολύτροπος» Ντίνος Γεωργούδης (γκουγκλάρετε τα ονόματα, για να βρείτε περισσότερα στοιχεία για όλους αυτούς, πέραν του Κατσαρού). Τα γυρίσματα, μάλιστα, είχαν σημαδευτεί από ένα τραγικό γεγονός. Ένα τρίκυκλο, που εξυπηρετούσε διάφορες ανάγκες του συνεργείου ντεραπάρισε, κάποια στιγμή, με αποτέλεσμα να σκοτωθεί το κοριτσάκι του οδηγού (που επέβαινε κι αυτό στο τρίκυκλο).

Η ταινία πρόλαβε να κάνει μια πολύ περιορισμένη προβολή (βουβή και αμοντάριστη – αν και το «αμοντάριστη» δεν ήταν πρόβλημα) στη Θεσσαλονίκη, αλλά έκτοτε χάθηκαν τα ίχνη της και δεν υπάρχει τίποτα απ’ αυτή πια, παρ’ εκτός κάποιων λίγων φωτογραφιών. Αυτή που βλέπετε είναι μία και προέρχεται από ένα δυσεύρετο περιοδικό της δεκαετίας του ’50 (φυσικά).

Η Athens Voice γιορτάζει 15 χρόνια και σταχυολογεί κουβέντες (που ειπώθηκαν σε συνεντεύξεις) από δεκάδες έλληνες τραγουδιστές, παλιούς και νέους. Δεν θυμάμαι να έχω διαβάσει κάποια συνέντευξη, απ’ όσες ξαναπροβάλλονται, αλλά διάβασα τώρα τα αποσπάσματα που επιλέχθηκαν για τα γενέθλια.
Η… Ελλάδα, η κρίση, οι Έλληνες, οι νέοι, η Ευρώπη, είμαστε έτσι, είμαστε αλλιώς, δεν μου αρέσει εκείνο, μου αρέσει το άλλο… κοινότοπες διαπιστώσεις, φιλοσοφίες του περιπτέρου… τρίχες, μπαρμπούτσαλα, φληναφήματα, εξυπνάδες… έπεα πτερόεντα… ο χρόνος να κυλάει και τίποτα να μη μένει.
Οι καλλιτέχνες είναι βασικά το έργο τους (καλό, μέτριο ή κακό). Δεν είναι εκείνα που λένε, αφού στις συνεντεύξεις τους διαβάζεις λόγια της πλάκας ή του αέρα. Λόγια απ’ αυτά τέλος πάντων που θα λέγαμε κι εμείς, ο καθένας από εμάς, ο χι ψι ωμέγα, κι ας μας ξέρουν μόνο… πέντε συγγενείς, η μάνα μας και οι γειτόνοι. Θέλω να πω πως εκείνο που μετράει είναι μόνο το ΓΕΓΟΝΟΣ. Εκείνο που συνέβη. Εκείνο μόνο έχει αξία (όταν είναι άξιο λόγου). Να, η σπουδαία Καίτη Ντάλη:
«Στο Στορκ με τον Σταμάτη Κόκοτα αρχίζουν και μας ρίχνουν στα μούτρα κέρματα. “Δεν ντρέπονται οι γύφτουλες;” λέω στον Σταμάτη συγχυσμένη. “Σκάσε, μωρή, και μάζευε. Δεν τις βλέπεις τις χρυσές λίρες;”».

Δεν θυμάμαι να έκλαψα όταν πέθανε πριν από 15 χρόνια, τόσο μα τόσο νέα. Ήμουν και νεότερος, και τα δάκρυα δεν περίσσευαν για πολλούς και για πολλές. Τώρα όμως; Τώρα πια είναι όλα τόσο διαφορετικά…

Δεν έχω δει ποτέ κανέναν να πίνει όπως πίνει ο Παράβας σ’ αυτό το κλιπ. Ούτε στο σινεμά, ούτε στην πραγματικότητα. Τον ζηλεύω! Τα ντέρτια μου τα αντιμετωπίζω αλλιώς, όχι με ποτό και με τσιγάρο, αλλά μάλλον κάτι χάνω… Φοβερός και ο Φίλιππας. Όλα τέλεια εδώ, εκτός από τη Μάρθα που φαίνεται κάπως ψεύτικη (ποτέ δεν μου άρεσε, εξάλλου, σαν ηθοποιός).

Μπαίνεις στον τοίχο ενός φίλου, που τον ξέρεις και κανονικά, όχι μόνο από το facebook, και λες τη γνώμη σου για κάτι. Και τότε πετάγεται ο ένας και ο άλλος και σου πιάνει κουβέντα (σε φάση κόντρας), χωρίς να σε ρωτήσει αν γουστάρεις να κάνεις διάλογο μαζί του. Λες και είσαι υποχρεωμένος να μιλάς on line με τον καθένα, που μπορεί να σκέφτεται διαφορετικά από σένα λέγοντας τα δικά του.
Το fb δημιουργεί… παραγνωριμίες και αυτό δεν το ανέχομαι. Δεν μ’ ενδιαφέρει να συζητάω (σε φάση κόντρας), με ανθρώπους που δεν τους γνωρίζω από κοντά και δεν ξέρω τι θεό λατρεύουν. Και γι’ αυτό θα λάβω τα μέτρα μου, άμεσα και σε συνεννόηση... μόνο με τον εαυτό μου.
