Better Oblivion Community Center is a brand new band comprising the formidable talents of Phoebe Bridgers and Conor Oberst, two of the most lauded American songwriters of the past several years. Written and recorded in Los Angeles during the summer of 2018, their self-titled debut album will be released on Dead Oceans in early 2019. The pair first collaborated on Bridgers’ 2017 single, “Would You Rather”, taken from her acclaimed debut album Stranger In The Alps. They teamed up again for a recording of Oberst’s “LAX” in the fall of 2018. Co-produced by Bridgers, Oberst and long-time Oberst/Bright Eyes collaborator Andy LeMaster and mixed by John Congleton, Better Oblivion Community Center features the work of several talented friends, including Nick Zinner (Yeah Yeah Yeahs), and Carla Azur (Autolux, Jack White) among others.

Next year marks the 25th anniversary of The Dandy Warhols. To celebrate, the Portland rockers have announced the release of their 10th studio album, Why You So Crazy, due out January 25th via Dine Alone Records.
Described as a return to their “freewheeling fashion”, the new album features 12 songs that pack in “references as far flung as Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, Don MacLean’s Chevy, and the church of Bowie’s ‘Modern Love’.”

VA – The Rough Guide to Women of the World (2019)
This diverse selection of gems from some of the world’s most remarkable female musicians begins in celebratory fashion with the golden voice of Indian singer Anandi Bhattacharya whose ‘Jai Ganesh’ is a joyous invocation to the elephant-headed god. She is joined by fellow Indian musician Jyotsna Srikanth, a virtuosic performer whose sublime violin playing on ‘Annapoorne’ unlocks the beauty of Carnatic classical music. Equally enchanting is the musical tradition of West Java, with Indonesian diva Neng Dini Andriati inviting us into this rich and mysterious world as part of the Sambasunda Quintet.
Translated as ‘A Girl On the Road’, ‘Po Drum Mome’ is taken from Eugenia Georgieva’s widely acclaimed 2018 album of the same name,…
…in which she expresses the joys and sorrows of Bulgarian folk song. Crossing the border into Turkey, Olcay Bayir’s songs unfold ancient stories of Anatolian love and mystery. Of Turkish-Kurdish origin, Olcay’s classically trained voice delivers a wonderful rendition of the mystical ‘Benim Yarim’. Also from Turkey, Çiğdem Aslan is joined by the UK’s finest Klezmer band She’Koyokh on the rip-roaring ‘Bağa Girdim’. Moving into the cultural crossroads that is the Middle East, Shireen Abu-Khader is the founder and lead vocalist of Jordan-based group Dozan, an innovative acoustic ensemble celebrating Arabic folk culture. With its soaring vocals and unique harmonies, the haunting track ‘Ya Mo’ is deeply influenced by Sufi mysticism and spirituality. Sarah Yaseen aka ‘Sarah The Sufi, is one of the lead singers in Rafiki Jazz, a remarkably cosmopolitan band who explore ancient musical heritages far and wide. Inspired by her father Sufi Muhammad Yaseen, Sarah’s Punjabi vocals reach out to your very soul on ‘Jhooli Laal Qalandar’ a classic reworking of the landmark traditional Qawaali song ‘Mustt Mustt’.
Led by the charismatic singer Fadimata Walet Oumar known as ‘Disco’, Tartit are a female fronted band, originally created in refugee camps to safeguard Tuareg traditional music. ‘Afous Dafous’ meaning ‘Hand In Hand’, is a song inspired by a children’s game that encourages unity and solidarity in the fight to preserve a Saharan culture under attack. In predominantly male dominated societies, music is one of the most powerful means by which women can express themselves. Madagascan singer and campaigner Lala Njava is a leading example whose songs talk of the deep sense of responsibility she feels towards improving women’s rights and the welfare of children in her Malagasy homeland, beautifully illustrated by the heartfelt ‘Sweet Lullaby’. Hope Masike is another torch-bearing musician from Zimbabwe, who accompanies her vocals with the historically male-dominated instrument the mbira (thumb piano) on ‘Nyuchi’, where she is joined by fellow members of African-Nordic jazz alchemists Monoswezi helping wind things down to a closure. — worldmusic.net

Blood Red Shoes – Get Tragic (2019)
320 kbps | 90 MB | LINKS
One thing we know for sure, albums written by bands in conflict fucking rule. Whilst Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours is the obvious choice, I’d point you in the direction of Abba, Smashing Pumpkins and even The Beatles. So, to contextualise Blood Red Shoes’ newest offering, Get Tragic – you have to know the back story.
‘We got to the end of the fourth record and were like f**k you, I never want to see you again’ reads the press release. Vocalist and guitarist Laura-Mary Carter subsequently packed her bags, walked out on and hopped on a plane to LA to find her fortune, ditching her musical partner Steven Ansell. But luckily for us, the story doesn’t stop there. A breakdown followed a tumultuous six months of, as Carter puts it, ‘drugs and clubbing’ during which our glamorous heroine was conscious of the absurd cliché of her situation – and from this was born Blood Red Shoes’ newest album’s title, Get Tragic.
Santana – In Search of Mona Lisa (2019)
320 kbps | 65 MB | LINKS
Carlos Santana will release a dramatic new EP, In Search of Mona Lisa, on January 25, 2019. On three spellbinding and transportive new songs, Carlos’ dramatic new EP, In Search of Mona Lisa, takes listeners inside a magical and deeply personal experience he had when he visited the Louvre Museum in Paris, France and set his eyes on Leonardo da Vinci’s beguiling masterpiece. The experience of seeing the Mona Lisa for the first time came flooding back to Santana months later, when he awoke from a dream with the lyrics to what would become the songs “In Search of Mona Lisa” and “Do You Remember Me” fully formed in his mind. “It was the first time that I ever woke up and lyrics were there in a tangible way,” he reveals. “I could just grab them and write the songs.”
On “Do You Remember Me”, Carlos begins the song, with passionate melodies and an invitation to dance. Once the band kicks in with a graceful Afro-Cuban groove (courtesy of Cindy on drums, with Karl Perazzo on congas, timbales and percussion), Santana opens up on a full five minutes of some of his most gorgeous soloing yet – his lead lines are stinging, teasing, crying and sensuous – before singers Andy Vargas and Ray Greene take over.
The EP’s title track sets an entirely different mood. Santana had shown his lyrics for “In Search of Mona Lisa” to producer Narada Michael Walden, who suggested a Bo Diddley-esque rhythm. “I wasn’t expecting that, but I immediately liked the idea,” Santana says. With Walden rocking a rave-up drumbeat (he also overdubbed bass and keyboards), Santana lets loose with biting, wah-drenched call-and-response phrases with singer Cornell “CC” Carter before he takes flight on an impassioned extended guitar solo.
While “In Search of Mona Lisa” was being recorded, Cindy suggested doing something more symphonic and bringing in bass master Ron Carter. “That’s all I needed to hear,” Santana enthuses. “I was like, ‘Oh, my God. Of course!” The resulting track, “Lovers From Another Time,” unfolds much like the painting that inspired the music itself, with the dual drumming of Cindy and Walden mixing with Carter’s elegant basslines to create a living and breathing canvas on which Santana splashes vibrant six-string colors and textures.
Mandolin Orange – Tides of a Teardrop (2019)
160 kbps | 74 MB | LINKS
Mandolin Orange — North Carolina-based singer-songwriter Andrew Marlin and multi-instrumentalist Emily Frantz — announce the release of Tides Of A Teardrop, their first new music since 2016. Out February 1, 2019, on Yep Roc Records — their fourth album for the venerable label — Tides Of A Teardrop finds Mandolin Orange exploring the intimate grief at the frayed edges of their songwriting and confronting loss head-on, facing down the depths of despair and emerging with something renewed and redemptive. It’s a progressive, personal statement from one of roots music’s most thoughtful young groups, on the cusp of yet another prodigious breakthrough.
On the self-produced Tides Of A Teardrop, their slow-burning acoustic meditations on love and loss are belied by a newfound directness as Marlin tackles the death of his mother, who died when he was 18. “I think her passing was almost the genesis of my writing,” says Marlin. “That was when I really began to find refuge in writing songs.”
Marlin’s songwriting voice emerges clearer than ever, set in sharp relief by the indelible performances of Mandolin Orange’s longtime touring band: Josh Oliver on keyboards and guitar, Clint Mullican on bass, and Joe Westerlund on drums. Whether it’s the trilling, weighty atmosphere of the allegorical “Wolves” or the Appalachian yearning of the hymn-like “Suspended In Heaven” (written on Mother’s Day), Marlin and Frantz’s vocal and instrumental interplay is as dialed in as ever, the instinctual expression of deeply known but unspoken truths.
