Lou Reed, the former frontman of legendary New York rock band The Velvet Underground, established himself as a solo artist after quitting the band in 1970 and is still active today. The five albums in this collection are his first five with Sire Records. They span the years 1989-2000, and include his most successful album, New York, which features one of Reed’s most loved songs, ‘Dirty Blvd’. New York’s follow-up album, Songs For Drella was an acclaimed collaboration with ex band mate John Cale. JULIAN & ROMAN WASSERFUHR: Relaxin’ in Ireland [ACT Music + Vision, 2018]

Γερμανοί μουσικοί (και αδέλφια) ο Julian Wasserfuhr (τρομπετίστας, φλουγκελχορνίστας) και ο Roman Wasserfuhr(πιανίστας), συνεργάζονται εδώ με τον τσελίστα Jörg Brinkmann, προκειμένου να ολοκληρωθεί το πιο καινούριο άλμπουμ τους για την ACT, που έχει τίτλο “Relaxin’ inIreland”. 

Ο τίτλος δεν πρέπει να παραπλανά – αν παραπλανά. Οι μουσικές που ακούγονται σ’ αυτή την παραγωγή τής γερμανικής εταιρείας δεν είναι  για… ξεκούραση, ούτε είναι αποκλειστικώς ή κυρίως irish folk. Βεβαίως ηχογραφήθηκαν σε κάποιο στούντιο, χαμένο και από τον Θεό, όπως διαβάζουμε, κάπου στο West Corkτης Ιρλανδίας, τον περασμένο Ιούνιο, βεβαίως έχουν μια ντελικάτη διάσταση, που οφείλεται και στον τρόπο που συνθέτουν οι Γερμανοί, μα και στον τρόπο που διασκευάζουν, όμως στην πράξη ό,τι ακούμε στο “Relaxin’ inIreland” είναι σύγχρονη, ευρωπαϊκή jazz. Jazz δηλαδή με πολύ συγκεκριμένες μελωδικές αναφορές και προδιαγραφές, που μπορεί να αφορούν από την «κλασική» μουσική, έως και στην παράδοση και που αποδίδονται με έναν προσεγμένο και σίγουρα αισθητικώς άψογο τρόπο. Και τούτο, δίχως να εμποδίζονται και τα κάπως πιο… προχωρημένα ηχοχρώματα, που σπέρνονται εδώ κι εκεί, στα διάφορα tracks, και στα οποία ιδιαίτερη συμμετοχή έχει ο (επίσης Γερμανός) τσελίστας.

Από την πλευρά των πρωτότυπων συνθέσεων θα λέγαμε πως τα αδέλφια Wasserfuhrκινούνται στους γνωστούς από τις παλαιότερες δουλειές τους δρόμους. Ωραίες μελωδικές αποτυπώσεις και πηγαίο υψηλό αίσθημα ξεχειλίζει σε κομμάτια όπως τα “Cello bello”, “Schnaff”, “Tears” κ.λπ., ενώ και το υλικό των διασκευών, και όχι μόνο γιατί είναι υπεράνω υποψίας (Van Morrison, Gilbert O'Sullivan…), είναι τέλειο και πλήρως ενσωματωμένο στη ροή τού άλμπουμ. Άρα… Άρα.

IDA SAND with STOCKHOLM UNDERGROUND: My Soul Kitchen [ACT Music + Vision, 2018]

Ένα καινούριο άλμπουμ που διαθέτει τέσσερα μόλις originals και οκτώ versions θέλει κάτι να πει. Κάτι να δηλώσει. Πως γίνεται για τη χαρά της συμμετοχής (από την πλευρά των μουσικών) και της ηχογράφησης, και πως θέλει να ακουστεί σαν ένα… πρόγραμμα σε πάρτυ. Αν, μάλιστα, το επιτυγχάνει αυτό το τελευταίο, τότε έχει επιτελέσει και το στόχο του.

Στο “My Soul Kitchen” της Ida Sand και των Stockholm Underground, συν τους guests (μεγάλα ονόματα ανάμεσα, σαν εκείνα των Lars DK Danielsson, MagnusLindgren, Nils Landgren κ.ά.) το πράγμα δείχνει από το εξώφυλλο – από το track list. Είναι λοιπόν τατραγούδια των Al Green (“Take me to the river”), Stevie Wonder (“Please don’t hurt my baby”), Ray Charles (“I believe to my soul”), Creedence Clearwater Revival (“Born on the bayou”), The Meters (“Just kissed my baby”), Bessie Smith (“Empty bed blues”), Charles Sheffield (“It’s your voodoo working”), Classics IV (“Spooky”), συν τατέσσερα πρωτότυπα τηςIda Sand, που ρίχνονται ανάμεσα, τα οποία επενεργούν σεσώμα και ψυχή με τον καλύτερο δυνατό τρόπο. Εννοούμε πως η μπάντα παίζει ένα σωστά συντονισμένο soul-rock, διαθέτοντας πλήρη ακουστική οργανική γκάμα (πολλά πλήκτρα, κιθάρες, μπάσο, ντραμς και ακόμη πνευστά και φωνητικά) και βεβαίως τη φωνή της Ida Sand – μια φωνή δυνατή, πειστική και οπωσδήποτε εξοικειωμένη με το συγκεκριμένο ρεπερτόριο.

Αυτό φαίνεται και αποδεικνύεται στο “My Soul Kitchen”, ένα άλμπουμ που το ακούς από την αρχή μέχρι το τέλος… μονορούφι. Και το ξανακούς βεβαίως.

For over 15 years The Old Grey Whistle Test graced British television screens and would go on to become one of the most incredibly influential music programmes. From its premiere in 1971, through to its finale in 1988, the BBC show hosted countless performances from a number of seminal artists.
