Magnetic South includes highest charting single, the melancholy “Joanne,” a nice showcase for Nesmith’s voice (just listen to him hit those high notes). Five of the 11 songs were first recorded during Nesmith’s time with The Monkees (“Calico Girlfriend” appeared on The Monkees Present; other tracks appeared on compilations like the Missing Links series). But here he makes them truly his own, working with a crack band (O.J. “Red” Rhodes on pedal steel guitar, John London on bass, and John Ware on drums), and no longer having to satisfy anyone’s expectations but his own. Other highlights include the pedal steel work and Nesmith’s yodeling in “Mama Nantucket,” and the dreamy closer, “Beyond the Blue Horizon.”

Coming on the heels of the cut-and-paste sound-collage schizophrenia of The Faust Tapes, Faust IV seems relatively subdued and conventional, though it’s still a far cry from what anyone outside the German avant-garde rock scene was doing. The album’s disparate threads don’t quite jell into something larger (as in the past), but there’s still much to recommend it. The nearly 12-minute electro-acoustic opener “Krautrock” is sometimes viewed as a comment on Faust’s droning, long-winded contemporaries, albeit one that would lose its point by following the same conventions. There are a couple of oddball pop numbers that capture the group’s surreal sense of whimsy: one, “The Sad Skinhead,” through its reggae-ish beat, and another, “It’s a Bit of a Pain,” by interrupting a pastoral acoustic guitar number with the most obnoxious synth noises the band can conjure. Aside from “Krautrock,” there is a trend toward shorter track lengths and more vocals, but there are still some unpredictably sudden shifts in the instrumental pieces, even though it only occasionally feels like an idea is being interrupted at random (quite unlike The Faust Tapes). There are several beat-less, mostly electronic soundscapes full of fluttering, blooping synth effects, as well as plenty of the group’s trademark Velvet Underground-inspired guitar primitivism, and even a Frank Zappa-esque jazz-rock passage. Overall, Faust IV comes off as more a series of not-always-related experiments, but there are more than enough intriguing moments to make it worthwhile. Unfortunately, it would be the last album the group recorded (at least in its first go-round).

Alumni of the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, Rhode Island, David Byrne, Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth formed The Artistics in 1974. They played their first gig as Talking Heads opening for the Ramones at CBGB on June 20, 1975, and signed to Sire Records in 1977. The group released their first single, “Love Building on Fire” in February that year. In March 1977, they added Jerry Harrison (keyboards, guitar, backing vocals), formerly of Jonathan Richman’s band The Modern Lovers. Their first album, Talking Heads: 77, was released soon afterwards. The album received considerable acclaim and spawned what became the group’s first chart single, “Psycho Killer”. 1978’s More Songs About Buildings and Food initiated the band’s long-term collaboration with producer Brian Eno. The record s cover of Al Green’s “Take Me to the River” broke Talking Heads into general public consciousness, and gave the band their first Billboard Top 30 hit. The Eno-Talking Heads experiment continued with 1979’s Fear of Music, which flirted with the darker stylings of post-punk, mixed with white funkadelia. 1980’s Remain in Light, heavily influenced by the afrobeat of Nigerian bandleader Fela Kuti, explored West African polyrhythms, weaving these together with Arabic music from North Africa, disco funk, and ‘found’ voices. These combinations foreshadowed Byrne’s later interest in world music. During this period, Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz also formed the successful splinter group Tom Tom Club, influenced by the foundational elements of hip hop. Likewise, Byrne – in collaboration with Eno – released My Life in the Bush of Ghosts, which incorporated world music, ‘found’ sounds, and included a number of other prominent international and post-punk musicians. It is the music and performances from the first five years of Talking Heads career that is featured on this three CD set. Featuring complete broadcasts of shows recorded in Chicago, San Francisco & Boston, in 1978 & 1979, this collection is testimony to a band who appeared to arrive fully formed and one who immediately sprang into action to make some of the most challenging yet listenable, experimental yet joyous music of the era.
