Frog Holler’s 19 song debut, originally released in 1998, remastered, repackaged and back in print
Prior to Frog Holler, front man Darren Schlappich had never been in a band before. Schlappich was a beginning guitar player with a handful of bluegrass inspired, locally themed songs when he met up with banjo player Mike Lavdanski and bass player Will Dennis in 1997. Berks County is Pennsylvania Dutch country and Schlappich’s songs resonated an affection for his hometown’s unique culture while refusing to conform to the conservative lifestyle of the band’s home base. Frog Holler was fueled by a burgeoning arts & music scene centered around Kutztown, PA and the state university there. Guitar player and songwriter John Kilgore and drummer Toby Martin, both KU alumni, rounded out the band as it prepped 23 brand new songs and headed into the studio.
In February 1998 Frog Holler officially released its 19 song debut, Couldn’t Get Along on its own ZoBird Records imprint. They pressed only 300 homemade copies with no more expectation than to sell them locally at shows. The record quickly gained the attention of Philadelphia radio station WXPN and fans followed. California boutique distributor, Miles of Music picked it up and suddenly Frog Holler was making considerable noise well beyond the confines of Virginville, PA. Couldn’t Get Along yielded some of Frog Holler’s most enduring songs including, #5 Bluebilly County,
#1 One More, #12 Supposed To Be Livin, and #2 Possum, the heartbreaking confessional tale of a wayward driver as told to a widowed marsupial.
Keeping up with the homemade production of Couldn’t Get Along proved difficult and after selling 2,000 copies the record fell out-of-print in the early 2000’s. Fast forward to 2010, Frog Holler have released six full-length recordings and an EP. They have cemented their reputation as an independent band capable of charting their own course, both creatively in the studio and as a touring band. Their heartbreaking songs and heart stopping live shows have propelled them well into their second decade. The time seemed right to give Couldn’t Get Along a re-master and a new life in the digital age. ZoBird Records is thrilled to announce that Couldn’t Get Along is available again on CD @ CD Baby and digital downloads @ iTunes and all other digital outlets.

Blackfield is the collaboration between Israeli songwriter and musician Aviv Geffen, and British musician and producer Steven Wilson. ‘Blackfield V’ sees a return to the full partnership that made the first two albums such firm favourites with fans, hinted at by the reprisal of the medicine bottle in the artwork from their first album.
The pair makes for a formidable musical force; Geffen has worked with legendary producers Tony Visconti and Trevor Horn, has played live with U2 and Placebo, and is currently a judge on the Israeli TV show ‘The Voice’. Wilson, after a long tenure as the leader of the hugely influential band Porcupine Tree, has since embarked on a highly successful solo career, achieving 3 UK top 40 albums (the most recent also making the top 3 in Germany, and The Netherlands), and 4 Grammy nominations.
Written and recorded over a period of 18 months in both Israel and England, ‘Blackfield V’ contains 13 linked songs that form a flowing 45 minute ocean themed song cycle. With the pair expertly handling vocals, guitars, and keyboards, they brought in Tomer Z from the Blackfield band on drums, Eran Mitelman on keys, and string arrangements were performed by the London Session Orchestra. ‘Blackfield V’ is a powerful journey through catchy melodies, lush arrangements, and stunning production, with legendary producer / engineer Alan Parsons working on three of the album’s key tracks.

DANNY BEN-ISRAEL ασύλληπτο ψυχεδελικό freak-out
Δεν μπορώ να θυμηθώ για ποιον ακριβώς λόγο είχα αγοράσει, το 2002, την επανέκδοση τού LP “Bullshit 3 ¼” του Ισραηλινού Danny Ben-Israel στη γερμανική World In Sound – μάλλον επειδή την είχα βρει, τυχαίως, μπροστά μου, παρακινούμενος από το εικαστικό. Θυμάμαι, όμως, γιατί είχα αγοράσει στην ιαπωνική Captain Trip το “The Kathmandu Sessions” το 2004 (εισαγωγή τής έκδοσης τής ισραηλινής Merryαπό την προηγούμενη χρονιά). Μου είχε αρέσει πολύ το “Bullshit 3 ¼” κι είχα πει να… ξαναποντάρω. Και δεν πόνταρα σε… άλογο κουτσό, αλλά σε… Πήγασο. Τα «sessions του Κατμαντού» είναι ένα από τα πιο βαρβάτα freaky ψυχεδελικά άλμπουμ που ηχογραφήθηκαν ποτέ. Θυμόσαστε την πρώτη πλευρά από το LPτων Ιταλών Le Stelle Di Mario Schifano; Μήπως τον χαμό στο πρώτο LPτων Red Crayola; Ε… προσθέστε κι άλλο! Σε αίσθημα, σε ουσία, σε ό,τι θέλετε… Αυτό το άλμπουμ λοιπόν, που είναι ηχογραφημένο στα late60s, και που πρωτοβγήκε σε CDτο 2003, επανεξέδωσε πριν λίγο καιρό η Anazitisi Records (σε συνεργασία με την ισραηλινή ARS) σε βινύλιο (400 κόπιες) και… όποιος πρόλαβε τον Κύριον είδε. Το LPφαγώθηκε, όπως ήταν φυσικό, στο Ισραήλ και ό,τι περίσσεψε μοιράστηκε όπου αλλού.

Η δεύτερη πλευρά ανοίγει με το “Seagulls”. Το μπάσο πάει να πιάσει μια γραμμή –την πιάνει– και πάνω εκεί αρχίζει να αραδιάζονται εφφέ, κιθάρες, όργανα, φωνητικά, ψαλμοί, κρουστά, φωνές off… και να χτίζεται ένα σκηνικό ημιακουστικό-ημιηλεκτρικό, που «γεμίζει» με διάφορα στη διαδρομή. Ακόμη ένα μεγάλο track από τον Danny Ben-Israel. Το προτελευταίο κομμάτι του άλμπουμ έχει τον απίστευτο τίτλο “The hippies of today are the assholes of tomorrow” και διαρκεί 12 λεπτά. Ξεκινά ήπια και νωχελικά, σαν να τζαμάρουν μπάντες του country-rock, με τον Danny να απαγγέλει, παρά να τραγουδά, διάφορους στίχους κοινωνικοπολιτικής φύσεως –τού τύπου “the oppressors of tomorrow are the revolutionaries of today”– αν και όχι, πάντα, με εντελώς σαφείς παραλήπτες. Πρόκειται για το πιο… προφανές track των «σέσιον του Κατμαντού», που ακούγεται σαν ένα αποδεκτό απ’ όλους ιντερμέτζο.
Είναι περίεργη η ιστορία του DannyBen-Israel και εν πολλοίς καταγράφεται (σε αγγλικά και εβραϊκά) στο 4σέλιδο ένθετο. Χοντρικά θα λέγαμε πως μέχρι το 1969 ο Dannyήταν ένας από τους πιο επιτυχημένους popτραγουδιστές του Ισραήλ (ηχογραφώντας LPκαι 45άρια), δοκιμάζοντας μάλιστα και στο θέατρο, διασκευάζοντας ξένα hits και τραγουδώντας δικά του στα εβραϊκά. Κάπως την είδε όμως εκεί προς τα τέλη των sixties (ήταν και κάτι ταξίδια που είχε κάνει στη Βιέννη) κι αποφάσισε, ξαφνικά, ν’ αλλάξει διαδρομή.
Είχε ακούσματα ο άνθρωπος, και κυρίως είχε το ταλέντο να τα μετατρέψει σ’ ένα πρωτότυπο LP, το βαρύ ψυχεδελικό “Bullshit 3 ¼”, που πήγε μάλλον άπατο. Ποιος ν’ άκουγε στο Ισραήλ τέτοια πράγματα το 1969-70; Κανείς. Παρά ταύτα ο Danny δεν πτοήθηκε...
Λίγο αργότερα (εκεί προς τα τέλη του ’69) ηχογραφεί κι άλλα tracks, έξι στον αριθμό, τα οποία θα αποτελούσαν το λεγόμενο “Kathmandu Sessions”. Το υλικό ήταν όμως ακόμη πιο out, με αποτέλεσμα να αγνοηθεί εντελώς από τη δισκογραφία. Ο Danny τα πήρε. Φεύγει από το Ισραήλ με προορισμό τη Νέα Υόρκη. Σταματάει στη Βρετανία, παρακολουθεί το φεστιβάλ στο Isle of Wight(τέλη Αυγούστου του ’70), γεμίζει με εμπειρίες, πάει στην Αμέρικα, ανακατεύεται με το τοπικό ethnicκύκλωμα (παίζει ακόμη και ελληνικά), προσπαθεί να βγάλει σε δίσκο τα «σέσιον του Κατμαντού» (αποτυγχάνει για ακόμη μια φορά – είχε περάσει πια και η εποχή), για να επιστρέψει στο Ισραήλ μετά το 1980… και τα λοιπά, και τα λοιπά, και τα λοιπά. Δεν χρειάζονται άλλες λεπτομέρειες, σημασία έχει το άλμπουμ.
Πρώτο κομμάτι το “Bad trip” (το track listείναι διαφορετικό στο CDτης Merry και στο LP της Anazitisi, αλλά εμάς, εδώ, μας ενδιαφέρει το LP). Από την αρχή ο Danny μάς τρίζει τα δόντια του. Χάος! Ανάποδες ταινίες στο φουλ (μα και… ίσιες) σ’ ένα τρίλεπτο mind-blowing track, που κόβει την ανάσα. Πόσοι και ποιοι συμμετέχουν στην εγγραφή, και τι παίζει ο καθείς, είναι άγνωστο. Κανείς δεν θυμάται – και πρώτος όλων ο Danny… Δεύτερο/τρίτο track η ολίγων δευτερολέπτων «Εισαγωγή» και αμέσως μετά το 13λεπτο “Kathmandu”. Φανταστικό κομμάτι με αλλόφρονα φωνητικά (αγγλικά, ισπανικά), δυνατές πενιές, αλλαγές τέμπο, απροσδόκητα «κοψίματα», διαστημικό όργανο τύπου Richard Wright (early Pink Floyd) ώρες-ώρες και βεβαίως συνολικό «χάσιμο» στο φουλ. Freak-out to the max! Το 7λεπτο “Can’t stand you” που κλείνει την πλευρά είναι ένα διαπεραστικό ψυχεδελικό track, σε γρήγορο τέμπο, με έντονα κρουστά, κιθάρες από άλλο πλανήτη και πειραγμένα φωνητικά, εντελώς απροσδιόριστο στην εξέλιξή του. Ελεύθερο jam έχουμε εδώ και… ό,τι ήθελε προκύψει. Προκύπτει το μέγα!

Το άλμπουμ θα ολοκληρωθεί με το 5λεπτο “Do you believe in fairytales?”, που κινείται στους ίδιους δρόμους με το προηγούμενο. Είναι, εν πάση περιπτώσει, ένα λιγότερο χαοτικό κλείσιμο σ’ έναν δίσκο που ξεχωρίζει σαν την μύγα μεσ’ στο γάλα από πολλές άλλες «ανάλογες» εγγραφές της περιόδου.
