Before there was The Cleaners from Venus, prolific singer-songwriter and national treasure of Wivenhoe, England, Martin Newell was in a band called The Stray Trolleys. In 1980, he and a few youngish unknowns got together in a little home-built country studio and recorded a handful of songs for an album that eventually emerged on a DIY cassette, Barricades and Angels. They weren’t perfect, but there is something very special about this collection. The music captures a time.

Αθηναϊκό organ-trio είναι οι Music Soup, αποτελούμενοι από την Ευγενία Καρλαύτη όργανο, πιάνο, ηλεκτρικό πιάνο, φωνή, τον Νέστορα Δημόπουλο κιθάρες και τον Βαγγέλη Κοτζάμπαση ντραμς. Ασυνήθιστο; Ναι, γιατί το χάμοντ το χειρίζεται γυναίκα (δεν θυμάμαι, αυτή τη στιγμή, να έχει υπάρξει κάτι άλλο ελληνικό ανάλογο). Περαιτέρω, το “Cut to the Chase”, που είναι το παρθενικό CD τους, είναι τυπωμένο για την εταιρεία του οργανίστα Tony Monaco, την αμερικανική Chicken Coup. Ασυνήθιστο; Δεν θα το ’λεγα, λαμβάνοντας υπ’ όψιν και την παγκοσμιοποίηση της δισκογραφίας – αφήνω δε το γεγονός πως στην Chicken Coup έχει ηχογραφήσει προσωπικό CD και ο Γιώργος Κοντραφούρης (το “Little Daddy’s Blues” το 2007). Αυτά για αρχή. Πάμε, όμως, και πιο κάτω…

Είναι διάφορα πράγματα (όλα θετικά) που μου κάνουν εντύπωση σ’ αυτό το άλμπουμ. Ας ξεκινήσω από τα πιο πίσω ή τα, εν πάση περιπτώσει, προφανή. Πολύ ωραίο εξώφυλλο, που ανοίγει στα τέσσερα, περιέχον στοιχεία, κείμενα (του φίλτατου Νίκου Φωτάκη) και φωτογραφίες, ενώ credit πρέπει να αποδοθεί και για την άψογη επαγγελματική παραγωγή (για αμερικανικό CD πρόκειται… θα πει κανείς). Από ’κει κάτω…

Οι Music Soupαποδίδουν δικά τους κομμάτια – καθώς και τα εννέα τού “Cut to the Chase” τούς ανήκουν. Αυτό είναι κάπως περίεργο, αλλά, τέλος πάντων, μπράβο τους. Θέλω να πω πως… ενώ με μια-δυο versions θα μπορούσε να κερδίσουν αμαχητί τις εντυπώσεις εκείνοι επιχειρούν να «πολεμήσουν» στηριγμένοι στις δικές τους δυνάμεις. Απ’ αυτή τη σιγουριά και την αυτοπεποίθηση ανταμείβονται. Όλα τα tracks έχουν μια συνοχή, δίχως να εμφανίζουν πρόδηλα στοιχεία εντυπωσιασμού, προβάλλοντας μιαν originality. Όχι πως δεν υπάρχουν «αναφορές», χάνονται όμως κάτω από την απλότητα των δικών τους θεμάτων και βεβαίως την μεστότητα των παιξιμάτων.

Το blues, στην τζαζωτή μορφή του, είναι εδώ πανταχού παρόν, με την Καρλαύτη να επιτείνει τη γενικότερη σιγουριά του γκρουπ και με τη φωνή της – που χωρίς να είναι η «φωνάρα» είναι κάτι παραπάνω από σωστή και πρέπουσα, και μάλιστα τραγουδώντας στην αγγλική όχι μόνο πρωτότυπα τραγούδια, αλλά κάνοντας και ξέφρενο σκατ! Δεν γίνονται κάθε μέρα αυτά, αν σκεφθούμε πως μ’ ένα στανταράκι π.χ. μπορείς να τη βγάλεις καθαρή.

Από κοντά και ο Δημόπουλος, βεβαίως, με την εξ ίσου γκρουβάτη φρασεολογία του, απλός και μεστός συγχρόνως είναι πάντα εκεί για να επεκτείνει την ορμή του γκρουπ, με τον ντράμερ Κοτζάμπαση να ακολουθεί το ίδιο λιτά και ουσιαστικά… και με κάποια ακόμη όργανα σε επιμέρους tracks (τρομπέτα, τενόρο και τρομπόνι από τους Παπαδόπουλο, Βασιλάκη και Ανδρέου αντιστοίχως) να προσφέρουν στο τελικό άκουσμα ένα ακόμη πιο πλούσιο χρώμα.

Δεν υπάρχει λόγος να επιμείνουμε σε συγκεκριμένα θέματα (αν και 2-3 πιθανώς ξεχωρίζουν), καθότι εκείνο που προβάλλεται εδώ είναι η ενότητα ενός απλού και δουλεμένου άλμπουμ.

The Show Ponies will release their latest album, How It All Goes Down, this Friday, January 20. Andy Freeman (Eisley/Manchester Orchestra, Rocketboys) produced this new record from the group, which is now available for pre-order on iTunes and Google Play. Clayton Chaney (lead vocals, bass) and Andi Carder (lead vocals, banjo) founded the group back in 2011 after relocating to California from Texas and Arkansas. The quintet, which also features Jason Harris (vocals, guitar), Philip Glenn (fiddle), and Kevin Brown (drums), continues to build enthusiastic supporters for their soulful Americana sounds. Today we premiere the forthcoming record.
