Best of The Beat on Afropop: Bob Marley’s Mento Roots

Beat25#2p50mentoWhat is mento? (No, it’s not an after-dinner mint or chewing gum.) Mento is Jamaican folk music that predates ska and reggae. Ska emerged in 1950s, but mento has been documented all the way back to the 1920s.

JollyBoys_Hiro-73_web-e1486334758451.jpg

Mento rumba box

The sound is reminiscent of early calypso, and the instrumentation is very much akin to some traditional African instruments, for example the “rumba box,” a long-lost cousin of the mbira or likembe; a banjo, which traces its roots to the ngoni, and of course, drums and percussion.

Every year on Feb. 6, there is worldwide recognition of the anniversary of Bob Marley’s birth in Jamaica in 1945. In his childhood, Bob was undoubtedly exposed to mento music in his rural village, and he drew on this background for many musical compositions throughout his career.  In this fascinating installment of “Best of The Beat on Afropop” from 2006, author and musicologist Michael Garnice documents the rich history of the sources of many Marley songs that evidence the strong influence of mento on Bob and the Wailers’ songs.

Beat25#2p51mentoGarnice writes: One aspect of the Bob Marley and the Wailers story that has never been fully explored is the influence of mento that threads through the group’s music and history. More than a dozen songs from the Wailers’ catalog borrowed a line from, were based on, or are versions of Jamaican folk/mento songs. Some of the musicians who helped create the Wailers’ history and define their sound came to Bob, Bunny and Peter by way of mento. And mento was instrumental in young Marley’s upbringing and decision to become a singer.

Enjoy this fascinating account as we celebrate the life of Brother Bob today. For more information on mento, visit the author’s comprehensive website, www.mentomusic.com. It includes audio clips and record labels from the original mento songs mentioned in this article. It also presents information, pictures, video, lyrics and news on mento music, as in addition to showcasing hundreds of mento records of the past and present.

Stay tuned for part two of the mento story: Don Neely’s article “Mento Is Back,” coming soon.

Sean Taylor – Flood & Burn (2017)

There is a kind of metaphorical crossroads, an infinitely fertile tract of land where blues, folk and country music meet and combine, and where new genres and musical styles are born and set loose into the world to do their thing. Some of the greats of popular music have congregated here over time: Bob Dylan has dabbled in all three forms, simultaneously and individually; Richard Thompson, John Martyn, Bert Jansch and even Led Zeppelin have approached blues from folkier angles, while American artists from Leadbelly and Odetta to Richie Havens and Eric Bibb have come at it from the other side. Of course, you could categorise these artists endlessly and arbitrarily, but what links them is a willingness to knowingly re-appropriate historically important musical forms, to take old songs and push them in new directions. Country, blues and folk are all social forms of music, and they grow and change as societies grow and change.

Of course, the crossroads is a long-standing symbol in the blues tradition: a symbol of death, for sure (death is at the heart of many great songs), but also a symbol of travel, of leaving home or returning home, of choices made, right or wrong. And in the Judeo-Christian tradition, the cross stands for rebirth as much as it stands for death. Each of these themes is, to some extent, explored in Flood & Burn, the new album by London-born singer-songwriter Sean Taylor. Even the album’s title alludes to elemental powers that are both destructive and regenerative. Taylor counts among his influences some of the great songwriters of the twentieth century: Dylan, Townes Van Zandt, Tom Waits. He records in Austin, Texas with an impressive roster of session musicians, and the results are often stunning. Album opener Codeine Dreams, for example, is slow-burning and hallucinatory, a pitch-black meditation on narcotic oblivion, with waves of saxophone courtesy of Joe Morales. Structurally it bears little resemblance to traditional song forms: there is a jazziness to it that brings to mind Tom Waits in his looser moments. And Taylor’s singing – a rough, smoky voice that reeks of barrooms and loneliness – also recalls Waits.

Fatou Seidi Ghali & Alamnou Akrouni – Les Filles de Illighadad (2016)

Fatou Seidi Ghali Two very different sides of Tuareg music – dreamy ishumar acoustic guitar sessions, and the hypnotic polyphonic tende that inspires it. Guitarist Fatou Seidi Ghali and vocalist Alamnou Akrouni lead the troupe, named after the village. Recorded in the open air studio of the desert.
Les Filles de Illighadad differs from the multitude of guitar bands and tende troupes in their curious bridging of these worlds. The tende (previously) is a water drum, formed out mortar and pestle, stretched across with animal skin.
Fatou Seidi Ghali, one of only two female guitarists in Niger in a overtly male dominated genre, leads the troupe with songs adopted from the tende repertoire – making them one of the few groups to pursue this path.

86 MB  320 ** FLAC

Her music is a gentle, almost sensual take on the Tuareg blues, these delicate webs of repetitive groove that couldn’t come from anywhere else. Yet the key is her incredible vocals, soft, almost expressionless, moving up and down in pitch with guitar. This is subtle, yet deeply personal music. The whole experience, the crickets in the background, the occasional movement of the mic and short comments, chattering and conversations between songs feels intimate, like we’re actually participants ourselves. It’s recorded outside as a continuous session, it’s a little raw, but you can understand why Sahel Sounds have released this – it has power.

The second side by contrast is much more upbeat, more percussive, more joyous and inclusive, with multiple singers, handclaps, wails and the tende, which Sahel Sounds describes as a drum “where two woman sit on pestles flanking a mortar, stretched with an animal skin.”

This time Fatou Seidi Ghali is joined by Talamnou Akrouni, both playing the tende, whilst seemingly a large amount of women from the village make up the choir, led by vocalist Alamnou Akrouni.

This is village music, raucous, hypnotic, life affirming. With multiple parts, and an almost call and response, punctuated by shrill exuberant cries, the key to this piece is the vocals which at times even take on a drone like quality. It’s fascinating, because we have no idea what they are saying we’re forced to analyse the timbre, the texture, and organization. One thing is clear however is that this music is about release, an opportunity for these women to get together with their peers, let loose and howl into the night. — cyclicdefrost.com
