What with all the time-consuming acid trips and having to grow your hair long, psych-rock hasn’t generally attracted a lot of people with a strong Protestant work ethic. That’s at least until bizarrely titled Melbourne seven-piece King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard gave the genre a shot in the arm and made everyone else look downright idle by releasing eight records in the last four years. Now they’ve upped the ante even further, announcing that in 2017 they’ll release no fewer than five new albums.

“I figured I’m no good at chilling,” says Stu Mackenzie, frontman, flautist and master of understatement. “Over the years I’ve tried to keep myself super busy so I don’t go insane. If I’m going to be a musician and a creative person, I may as well be a productive creative person.”

The One Takes EP finds Daymé Arocena bouncing around ideas with label boss Gilles Peterson to put her unique spin on five different covers. Re-imagining cuts ranging from Italian obscurities to US house heroes, the sessions (as you might guess from the title) were about taking down whichever ideas came first. Working in a tradition of covers that’s long been ingrained in jazz as well as Latin music, One Takes finds them taking that approach and running with it.
It’s a perfect vehicle for Daymé to bridge musical worlds in a way that’s always come naturally. With an upbringing split between classical training, early jazz greats like Billie Holiday and the spiritual and musical foundations of the Santería religion, she’s grown up seeing the bigger picture.

Daymé’s versatility meant he could throw dancefloor shakers at her – like Peven Everett’s ‘Stuck’ – along with super-rare cuts like Rafaella Renzulli’s ‘Asking Eyes’, which he witnessed Patrick Forge deploy to maximum effect on the dancefloor at last year’s Dingwalls reunion.

‘Gods of Yoruba’, meanwhile, is a Horace Silver composition and ‘El 456’ is a Los Britos track which Gilles says “has always been a bit of a joker card for me at gigs”. ‘African Sunshine’, finally, is by Sun R Arkestra initiate Eddie Gale. The finished EP is almost as much a tour through interesting corners of Peterson’s record collection as it is through Daymé’s range as a performer.

Il y a la compilation bien foutue avec les singles. En inter, ils mettent les "radio edit" la plupart du temps et en France ils en sont toujours avec les versions albums. Après tu as la compilation cheap à 59 francs de l'époque, qui se revèle aujourd'hui parfois intéressante avec ses morceaux obscures. Et puis tu as la bonne compilation qui disparait souvent du jour au lendemain, avec le petit truc en + qui fait que. Là, on a le droit à la version maxi de "la boite de Jazz" et en petit malin que je suis à celle de "la fm". Mais il y a une chanson rare en cd dedans : la face b de "lord have mercy", 45 tours hors album. A vous de trouver... Ceci dit " Unis vers l'uni" restera toujours pour moi la chanson test pour acheter des baffles, le morceau de bravoure qui t'annonce si t'as du bon ou du mauvais matos.

Bill Wyman was joined by a host of musical legends to celebrate his 80th birthday at the Indigo at the O2 in October 2016. It was hailed as the musical line-up of the year – with 5-star reviews in The Telegraph – and that’s not surprising. Where else would you get the Rolling Stones sending a video message, while the likes of Van Morrison, Robert Plant, Imelda May, Mick Hucknall, Bob Geldof and many more joined Bill on stage for an evening gig that was packed with emotion, music and soaring performances, supported superbly by the Rhythm Kings. The answer is Bill Wyman’s 80th birthday gala concert – a tour de force of great music. Held at the Indigo at the O2 in London as part of Bluesfest, the intimate nature of the gig fitted the evening perfectly, as Bill introduced a stellar line-up, with Joe Brown followed by Mark Knopfler starting the evening with a mesmerising performance, with Mark delivering sublime guitar licks that held the audience spellbound. What followed was act after act delivering a passionate tour of rhythm and blues including Little Red Rooster, Route 66, and I’m Crying. Bill also collected his lifetime achievement award from Bluesfest, which was presented on stage.

Em FADO, André contou com a orientação de Diogo Clemente (Carminho, Raquel Tavares, Mariza) produtor do disco, bem como as violas no mesmo. A guitarra portuguesa foi entregue a Ângelo Freire (Ana Moura) e Bernardo Couto (António Zambujo), e o baixo a Marino de Freitas (Carlos do Carmo), músicos muito experientes na área do fado.

Temas de fadistas como Carlos Ramos, Manuel Fernandes, Maria da Fé, Francisco José, Manuel de Almeida, Fernando Maurício, entre outros, nunca antes regravados por nenhum artista que não o cantor original, foram os escolhidos. Afropop Worldwide is excited to announce that we are curating a live music residency for the month of March at Brooklyn venue Threes Brewing! The series will present New York-based musicians performing the excellent African and Afro-diasporic music featured on our programs, live at a beautiful venue. Join us for the first three Tuesdays in March to hear live music from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Colombia, Benin, Ivory Coast, Zimbabwe and Nigeria.

Building on over 25 years of Peabody Award-winning public radio programming, Afropop has organized this project as a new way for local audiences to enjoy the music that we share with you. The music ranges from traditional Afro-Colombian bullerengue, to Congolese rumba and ndombolo, to Afro-jazz from Benin. Nigerian DJ and Afropop collaborator DJ Nenim (Eko Fo’ Show/Seeds of Afro) will be spinning eclectic rare groove and contemporary African pop to keep you dancing all three nights.
