LARRY CORYELL (1943-2017)
Ο Larry Coryell, που πέθανε προχθές στα 74 χρόνια του, ήταν/είναι ένας από τους πιο αγαπημένους μου κιθαρίστες και γι’ αυτό θα γράψω τώρα λίγα λόγια – από ουσιαστική και όχι τυπική υποχρέωση.

Δεν θυμάμαι πού διάβασα για πρώτη φορά ή ποιος μου μίλησε για τον Larry Coryell, εκεί στις αρχές των eighties. Μάλλον κανείς. Μάλλον τυχαίως είχα αγοράσει –παρασυρόμενος από τι άραγε;– το πρώτο LP του που έπεσε ποτέ στα χέρια μου, αλλά όχι πρώτο δικό του, το “Introducing the Eleventh House” [Vanguard VSD 79342], που είχε κυκλοφορήσει το 1974. Θυμάμαι, ακόμη, πως είχα πάθει πλάκα με το παίξιμό του στην κιθάρα, που κάποιες φορές δεν το ξεχώριζες από τα σύνθια του Mike Mandel ή την τρομπέτα του Randy Brecker, μίλια μακριά απ’ ό,τι είχα μέχρι τότε (και αργότερα!) ακούσει.
Αν και ο ήχος τού άλμπουμ –και το λέω τώρα αυτό– ήταν ελαφρώς «γυαλισμένος», οι συνθέσεις και τα παιξίματα ήταν φοβερά, καθώς κομμάτια όπως το “Birdfingers” ή το “Yin” (που ήταν σύνθεση του Wolfgang Dauner από την εποχή των Et Cetera – από τους οποίους είχε περάσει και ο Coryell) σου έπαιρναν αμέσως το σκαλπ. Η line-up; Απλώς… άπαιχτη. Με τη σειρά, και έτσι όπως τους βλέπετε (από αριστερά) στη φωτογραφία από το back cover: Randy Brecker τρομπέτα, Alphonse Mouzon κρουστά, Larry Coryellκιθάρες, Mike Mandel πιάνο, σύνθια και Danny Trifan μπάσο – οι μεγάλοι Eleventh House, που όρισαν, και αυτοί, το jazz-rock, και που έφτιαξαν στην πορεία και άλλα καλά άλμπουμ εκεί προς τα mid-seventies.
Κάποια στιγμή στα μέσα των eighties, καθώς δεν μου είχε φύγει η κάψα για το καλό jazz-rock, εντόπισα μερικά ελληνικής κοπής άλμπουμ του Larry Coryell, που μου είχαν κάνει μεγάλη εντύπωση. Όχι μόνο γιατί είχαν γαμιστερές μουσικές (κοινώς αριστουργήματα του rockκαι του fusion), αλλά και γιατί τα βινύλια ήταν ελληνικής κοπής («ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗΣ ΚΑΤΑΣΚΕΥΗΣ» διάβαζες στο κάτω μέρος του labelμε… μικρά κεφαλαία γράμματα), χωμένα μέσα σε χοντρά αμερικάνικα εξώφυλλα.
Δεν είμαι σίγουρος πότε ακριβώς «κόπηκαν» τα συγκεκριμένα LP στην Ελλάδα. Κατά πάσα πιθανότητα στις αρχές των seventies, ή πιο μετά, και μάλλον πρέπει να είχε βάλει το χεράκι του ο Τάσος Φαληρέας. (Κάτι πρέπει να είχα διαβάσει παλαιά γι’ αυτό, αλλά τώρα αποκλείεται να το βρω). Και δεν είχε «κοπεί» μόνο Larry Coryell, αλλά και άλλα LP της Vanguard, όπως το σπαρακτικό “War War War” του Country Joe McDonald, το “Red Buddha”του Stomu Yamash’ta και μερικά ακόμη (δεν τα θυμάμαι όλα τώρα), τα οποία γενικώς (για να μην πω και ειδικώς) απουσιάζουν από το discogs.
Και όσον αφορά στον Larry Coryell μιλάμε για τα ασύλληπτα LP του από τα late sixties-early seventies, όπως το “Coryell” του 1969, το “At the Village Gate” του 1971, το “Offering” του ’72 και δεν ξέρω ποια άλλα ακόμη.
Λέμε για δισκάρες, για φοβερά κιθαριστικά άλμπουμ, για ιστορικές line-ups (Bernard Purdie ντραμς, Ron Carter μπάσο, Jim Pepper φλάουτο, Steve Marcus σαξόφωνα κ.λπ.) και βεβαίως για tracks [όπως το “Sex” ή το “Jam with Albert(Stinson)” από το “Coryell”], που σπάνε κόκκαλα σχεδόν 50 χρόνια αργότερα.

Ήταν η εποχή, όταν ο Coryell είχε το status ενός Jimi Hendrix(εντάξει, πιο κάτω…) κάνοντας ακόμη κι εκείνον τον Eric Clapton να δηλώνει στον Frank Kofsky:
“Larry Coryell… he plays a lot of runs about the same as I play. You know, his simple ones. I can’t play all those things that he does, but he can play the things that I do. And he does”.

Φυσικά, ο Coryellείχε ξεκινήσει νωρίτερα να παίζει κιθάρα – σε δίσκους άλλων, όπως στο “The Dealer” [Impulse!, 1966] του Chico Hamilton ή στο “Nine Flags” [Impulse!, 1966] του Chico O'Farrill, κάνοντας αισθητή την παρουσία του και ως μέλος των Free Spirits, ενός από τα καλύτερα νεοϋορκέζικα ροκ γκρουπ της εποχής.
Όπως είχαμε γράψει και παλιότερα, για το μοναδικό LPτους, το “Out of Sight and Sound” [ABC S-593, 1967]:
Το άλμπουμ των Free Spirits είναι ηχογραφημένο στο New Jersey, στο τέλος του 1966, από τον Rudy Van Gelder, σε παραγωγή του Bob Thiele. Γενικώς, θα έλεγα πως πρόκειται για ένα ψυχεδελικό άλμπουμ, ενταγμένο περισσότερο (δηλαδή απολύτως) στο rock στρατόπεδο, παρά στο jazz. Pop, με την ευρύτερη έννοια, τραγούδια συντάσσουν τα Ελεύθερα Πνεύματα, τα οποία (τραγούδια) στην πορεία λαμβάνουν περίεργες διαστάσεις – κάτι που μπορεί να αναζητηθεί, με σιγουριά, στις προσωπικότητες των μουσικών που τους αποτελούσαν (Larry Coryell lead κιθάρα, σιτάρ, φωνή, Columbus Baker ρυθμική κιθάρα, Chris Hills μπάσο, Jim Pepper τενόρο, φλάουτο, Bob Moses ντραμς). Αλλοιωμένοι blues ρυθμοί, αρμονικά φωνητικά, προσεγμένη και όχι μπρούτα garage αισθητική, και βεβαίως τα πνευστά του Pepper να μετατοπίζουν, συχνά, το κέντρο βάρους προς πιο τζαζ καταστάσεις (“Cosmic daddy dancer”, “Storm”). Έτσι ανοίγει το jazz-rock κεφάλαιο...

Μνημειώδεις είναι επίσης, από εκείνη την περίοδο, οι παρουσίες του Larry Coryellσε άλμπουμ τρίτων, όπως στο “Memphis Underground” [Atlantic, 1969] του Herbie Mann ή στα έξοχα άλμπουμ του Steve Marcus, ενώ από την προσωπική, πια, δισκογραφία του δεν γίνεται να λησμονηθούν LP, όπως το “Spaces” [Vanguard, 1970] για παράδειγμα, μαζί με τους John McLaughlin κιθάρα, Chick Corea ηλεκτρικό πιάνο, Miroslav Vitous μπάσο και Billy Cobham ντραμς. Αντιλαμβάνεστε, προφανώς, το βάρος των ονομάτων…
Προς τα τέλη του ’70 ο LarryCoryell τακίμιασε με πολλούς μουσικούς (Philip Catherine, John Scofield, Stephane Grappelli, Chet Baker, MichaelUrbaniak, Biréli Lagrène…), ψάχνοντας, πάντα, τα πολλαπλά επίπεδα του fusion, προσφέροντας καλούς δίσκους μέσα στο πνεύμα τής εκάστοτε εποχής.
Θυμάμαι, δε, πως τον παρακολουθούσα και στην εποχή του Jazz& Τζαζ, γράφοντας κείμενα για διάφορα άλμπουμ του, όπως π.χ. για το “Spaces Revisited” [Shanachie, 1997].

Ο Larry Coryellείχε επισκεφθεί τουλάχιστον μία φορά την Ελλάδα, τον Φεβρουάριο του 2007, όταν βρέθηκε στο Αθηνά Live του Γιώργου Φακανά (22-24/2), μαζί με τους Victor Bailey και Lenny White, για live και σεμινάρια.

VA – This Is Kologo Power! (2016)
The Kologo is a lute from Northern Ghana. It is physically very similar to many of the other versions of the “tradi-guitar” in West Africa (hoddu, xalam, tidnit, terhadant, ngoni), but for it’s minimal design – a calabash, covered in goat skins, and boasting only two strings. The center of Kologo music is is Bolgatanga, a small city in the Northeast of Ghana, and ethnic center of the Frafra people. There are some 85 Kologo players in Bolgatanga, playing in some capacity at public events – in weddings, at funerals, and in the “pito” bars, a type of fermented millet drink.
Most of the tracks on this album were recorded in studios in Ghana. Some are sung in Frafra, others in pidgin English. Some are with a live band and some feature just solo kologo and voice.
But all the songs represent a force and unveil a very strong musical power. The connection between kologo music and (delta) blues has been made more than once and that resemblance is not written on ice; the personal and the social messages, the strong rhythms, the push that this instrument -with only two strings spanned over a goatskin on a calabash- can give to people to make sure they don’t ignore the dance floor, all that makes it worth the effort of putting together at least one kologo compilation.
In 2014, Arnold de Boer and King Ayisoba began working together. Arnold de Boer is guitarist and vocalist for The Ex and the solo project ZEA. In 2014 he traveled to Ghana and performed on radio, tv, and raucous crowds. The Ex had spent years developing similar connections in Ethiopia over the past decade. While to sum up the tenets of the group’s aesthetic is didactic, suffice to say there is a strong element of punk and independence, existing outside of the a larger institutional world, and positioned for international collaboration. King Ayisoba is also well versed in the experimentation of cross cultural collaborations. Coming from a small village in the countryside and with a spiritual relationship with the Kologo, his career has progressed in his movements across the country. Moving to Kumasi and Accra, he began collaborations with hiplife artists and eventually brought the Kologo music to a wider audience in Ghana – singing lyrics in Twi, pidgin English, as well as Farafara.
In 2015, the two began to compile tracks for a compilation highlighting kologo music, with a variation of players and styles – but centered around the contemporary Kologo scene of Bolgatanga.
“The idea of making a compilation had been discussed on our European tours already a few times. In the van we listen almost solely to kologo music and there is no lack of great tracks. So together we started picking out the tracks we really liked. There was one dogma: “no computer beats”.
