The Winners from Carnival 2017
“Carnival” encompasses a lot of things—dancing, costumes, parades and contests. And with Ash Wednesday now behind us, the results are in.
Several of the largest, most famous Carnivals came to an end Wednesday, including many across the Caribbean like Haiti and Trinidad and Tobago, as well as the famed samba celebrations down in Brazil and, closer to home, in New Orleans, Carnival climaxed with Mardi Gras.
In Trinidad and Tobago, the most-played music at the festival wins the famous “Road March” title. Taking their part in a lineage that includes Lord Kitchener and Mighty Sparrow are this year’s winners, Ultimate Rejects, who won with their song, “Full Extreme.”
While the Ultimate Rejects were first-time winners, an old champion reemerged in South America. In Rio de Janeiro, the samba school Portela was crowned the winner of Carnival. Just like the Brazil’s World Cup team, Portela has a long and storied history but little recent success. With 22 titles, they are the winningest samba school in Rio, but this is their first title in 33 years.
Inspired by singer and composer Paulinho da Viola, Portela’s theme revolved around how we relate to water; depicting native fish and also the worst environmental disaster in Brazilian history. In 2015 two dams owned by a mining company collapsed, contaminating the water supply for much of southeastern Brazil. They weren’t the only environmentally conscious samba school this year—Imperatriz Leopoldinense’s presentation protested a controversial hydroelectric dam and spoke in favor of rights for Brazil’s indigenous population—but according to the BBC, Portela got top marks in “costumes, rhythm and the quality of the samba song composed for this year’s carnival.”
You can see pictures from the performance via plus55, or watch their whole presentation on YouTube. One glimpse of these dancers dressed as alligators and their top marks in “costumes” makes total sense.
In São Paolo, Acadêmicos do Tatuapé was crowned the city’s Carnival winner, a first for the samba school, which began in 1952. In a move that’s especially pertinent to this publication, their entredo was titled “Mother Africa Tells Her Story: From the Sacred Cradle of Humanity to the Blessed Earth of Great Zimbabwe” and centered on historical African kingdoms.

Tempo dos Mestres (Time of the Masters) is the second album from the tireless, young Brazilian guitarist Fabiano Do Nascimento. It finds its roots in the depths of the Amazon rainforest, passed down through generations of Native Brazilians, and is imbibed by the Afro-Brazilian culture that arose after Portuguese colonization. This blend is not new in Brazil, and is represented musically by great Brazilian musicians both known and celebrated - the guitarist Baden Powell and catalyst Hermeto Pascoal, both direct influences on Do Nascimento - and less exposed, like the experimentalist Carioca, one of Do Nascimento s mentors, and the Brazilian psychedelic pioneer Lula Cortes, whose album Paebiru rewrote Brazilian rock s history in 1975. It is the third Brazilian album released on Now-Again, following Seu Jorge and Almaz and Do Nascimento s debut Dança dos Tempos. Do Nascimento's is joined on Tempo dos Mestres by his long time percussionist, Ricardo "Tiki" Pasillas on trap drums and percussion, and Sam Gendel on saxophone and flute. Vocals are performed by Thalma de Freitas and Carla Hasset. These tracks were recorded live in the studio with no overdubs, straight to 2 analog-tape, and only sparingly mastered to focus on the subtleties of the performances. Do Nascimento s fans include legendary percussionist Airto Moreira, who recorded Dança dos Tempos and can be found playing live with Do Nascimento. "He s Brazilian but (his mind is) from a place in Brazil that is not common. Moreira states. Fortunately, we still have some musicians who like to play music and who like to touch the instrument and who like that energy! Do Nascimento takes his music, and his place in Brazil s lineage, seriously, and he often travels the vast country, spending time in the rainforest, living life as it was lived in the distant past, while studying with still living masters as he searches for new directions of the path trod by the geniuses whose influence abounds in contemporary music, but whose names are still unfamiliar. Being a musician - feeling, studying, experiencing, living music -this comes first, right? Do Nascimento questions. Second, we hope that the depths of knowledge in the music from the masters before us can be shared more, each time, to the younger generations coming. In Tempo dos Mestres Do Nascimento answers himself with a beautiful entry into the evolving language of timeless Brazilian music.

Producer and multi-instrumentalist Syd Green plays just about everything else on the record. His tasteful approach has allowed Caseley to do the story-telling with the freedom to move between genres with songs inspired by Ryan Adams, Mary Gauthier, Neil Young and Janis Joplin, delivered in a style that’s completely her own.
