VA – Tanbou Toujou Lou: Meringue, Kompa Kreyol, Vodou Jazz, & Electric Folklore from Haiti 1960-1981 (2016)
For most listeners, Tanbou Toujou Lou: Merengue, Kompa Kreyou, Vodou Jazz & Electric Folklore from Haiti 1960-1981 will capture snapshots from a distant place — “the pearl of the Caribbean,” Haiti. But for ALL listeners, it will capture snapshots from a distant, sometimes socially and politically turbulent, era.
Tanbou Toujou Lou illustrates the different colors of music drawn by Haiti’s unique geographic location amongst the rhythmic, melodic, and spiritual connections between the Caribbean and West Africa. Merengue danced in from the Dominican Republic to the east. From the south, Columbia introduced accordion-and guitar-driven cumbia. Cuba, its neighbor to the north (and still a strong economic and cultural ally), contributed…
…mambo, guajira, and Afro-Cuban rhythms to this sweltering musical melting pot. Threads from the Harlem Renaissance also wove their way south into Haiti’s sound.
From the late 1950s into the early 1970s, many Haitians fled their homeland to escape the repressive rule of François Duvalier, ultimately planting deep Haitian roots in Miami and New York City, especially in and around Brooklyn. Tanbou Toujou Lou is culled from radio archives and private collections from Port-au-Prince to Brooklyn. “I lost count of the homes, basements, and garages I had trawled through, in the depths of winter, in parts of the city detached from public transport. It goes without saying, there’s a lot of Haitian vinyl in New York,” wrote researcher, curator and producer Vik Sohonie. Sadly, many local archives were destroyed in the earthquake that devastated Haiti in 2010.
Much of Tanbou Toujou Lou sounds primitive but not simple. “Lagen” from Zotobré—a 1970s Haitian all-star band including composer, bandleader and saxophonist Webert Sicot—kicks off like a party and makes you want to dance, no matter its cultural or chronological distance. “Gislene” was the first tune written by co-founder and guitarist Albert Chancy for Tabou Combo, a genuine institution in Haiti’s musical culture of the 1960s, and glides on the twin rails of accordion and electric guitar while vocal chants arise like spirits from the shadowy corners of its hot dancehall rhythm. (Chancy served as advisor to former Haitian President Michel Martelly.)
Psychedelic guitar fringes in “Rapadou” (Rodrigue Milien et Son Groupe Combite Creole) make it clear that the impact of Jimi Hendrix’s experiments with the “electric” part of “electric guitar” were truly heard all around the world. Electric guitar also cuts sharp and bright to graft together American funk and Caribbean dance rhythms in “Diable La” (Les Shleu Shleu). The party winds down with “Meci Bon Dieu” (Orchestre de la Radio National D’Haiti), an intricate arrangement of male and female vocals, rhythm section, and ensemble and solo horns. — AllAboutJazz

The Smoke Wagon Blues Band – Cigar Store (2016)
Opening with Walking Cane, a funky blues rocker, Corey Lueck has the lead on vocal and Jason Colavecchia on bass and Tibor Lukacs add the hot bottom. Nick Succi brings it on piano and Gordon Aeichele lays down a cool sax solo. Must’ve Read It Wrong is a driving blues rocker with a solid bass line by Colavecchia. Succi and Aeichele each lay in nice solos and Mike Stubbs’ on guitar and Lueck on harp add the dressing. On R&B style track, I Tried, Stubbs lays in a nice intro and Aeichele plays warm sax lines complimenting Lueck’s soulful lead vocals. Hoodoo Woman has a real interesting contemporary blues sound, stripped down and basic. With cool raspy vocals and a simple melody line and guitar riff, reinforced by Lueck’s harp work. Put The Quilt Out To Dry has a cool percussive feel over a basic, Sonny Boy Williamson feel. With it’s dual rhythms, it really digs in, making it one of my favorites on the release. Rock n’ roller, Directly Under Her Thumb, has a cool boogie rhythm dressed perfectly by Succi’s piano work and the walking bass line of Colavecchia. Stubbs stretches out a little on guitar and Aeichele’s sax work is cool. Title track, Cigar Store has a cool walking bass line and with a taste of New Orleans, has a cool horn solo, slide solo and of course boogie piano. Lueck’s intro on resonator on White Mule is way cool. The track reminds me quite a bit of Neil Young’s Are You Ready For The Country but with an Allman Brother’s guitar riff. Interesting. King Biscuit Boy’s Mean Old Lady has a cool hi stepping feel with nice slide work by Lueck, a prominent bass line and a real nice piano solo by Succi. Following a smooth R&B hit format, I Can’t Change is the most certain radio track on the release with sure footed lead vocals by Lueck and a soulful sax solo by Aeichele. Steve Sherman’s organ opener on Quarter Mile really sets the pace for a rolling rocker with a driving drum beat by Lukacs and Stubbs slide work nicely pushing Lueck’s lead vocals. Aeichele’s aggressive sax solo really gives the track pop and Lueck hit’s it hard on harp giving this track real starch. Wrapping the release is a casual, rag style track, You’ve Been a Good Old Wagon. It has just the right feel with sassy New Orleans style sax work, piano and harp… it’s a great closer for a solid release by Smoke Wagon.

Eliane Elias – Dance of Time (2017)
Way back in 1991, Brazilian-born pianist Eliane Elias opened Illusions, her debut solo album, with a tune called ‘Choro’. It offered a swinging distillation of the musical form that has been at the heart of her life-long study of samba. Since then, she’s revisited her musical heritage over and over again, wedding modern jazz to post-’60 Brazilian jazz and MPB. In the process, she’s developed an instantly identifiable sound as a pianist. Dance of Time follows 2015’s fine Made in Brasil, a set that relied most heavily on bossa nova. Teaming again with collaborative producers Steve Rodby and husband Marc Johnson, Elias is accompanied by a stellar rhythm section: bassist Marcelo Mariano, guitarist Marcus Teixeira, drummer Edu Ribeiro, and percussionists Marivaldo dos Santos and…
…Gustavo di Dalva on most of this set. Recorded in Brazil and New York, the date also includes a wonderful guest list that includes Take 6’s Mark Kibble, Randy Brecker, Mike Manieri, Joao Bosco — who adds his voice and guitar to a lovely reading of his own “Coisa Feita” — and Toquinho.
The program contains readings of killer sambas such as “O Pato,” Joao Donato’s eternal “Sambou Sambou,” the wonderful “Samba de Orly” (co-composed by Toquinho, who also sings on it, Vinicius De Moraes and Chico Buarque), and Ary Barroso’s “Na Batacuda da Vida.” Each of these numbers remains faithful to the originals, but Elias’ arrangements, pianism, and breezy, syncopated vocals graft them so thoroughly onto swinging, straight-ahead, modern post-bop, it’s difficult to accept they weren’t always in the jazz fakebook. But she goes further. She injects Harry Warren’s slippery pop blues “You’re Getting to Be a Habit with Me,” with a slow choro backbeat. She also transforms Kurt Weill’s and Ogden Nash’s sultry “Speak Low” into simmering, polished modern jazz with a fantastic multi-tracked backing vocal by Kibble and great soloing from Brecker. The best tunes here, however, are her own. “By Hand (“Em Maos”) offers another backing vocal from Kibble, as Elias stitches samba onto bossa in a lithe, sensual groove. “An Up Dawn” is a vehicle for her intricate, syncopated chord voicings on her instrument’s middle and lower registers, which create an interlocking dance of samba, tango, and bluesy ragtime. “Not to Cry (Pra Nao Chorar)” is a co-write with Toquinho — who lends his guitar and weathered yet effective vocal in a duet. He began the tune in 1978 as a vehicle (for Elias) with the working title “Eliane.” He completed it for this album with participation from the tune’s muse. Their singing voices are an elegant yet earthy study in contrasts, while his lilting guitar chords pace her keyboard embellishments. Its tenderness sends the set off with a sweet whisper.
Dance of Time is inspired, deftly musical, and truly accessible to a wide range of listeners from jazz to pop to Brazilian music. It’s virtually flawless.
