Twang may not necessarily be in vogue these days, but lilting songs about growing old and broken hearted always seem to strike a universal nerve no matter the genre or locale from which they hail. Dougie Poole came from Providence to New York, originally crafting dissonant tunes that took cues from R. Stevie Moore and Arthur Russell, and took them into his own melancholy direction. But noise and anonymity eventually had a ceiling for Poole, and more earnest songwriting began to take shape, and that’s how we arrive at something beautiful like “Less Young but as Dumb.” The lyrical content of the song is right there in the title, casting a disintegrated Roy Orbison pallette in the modern age, tossing traditional country tropes aside in favor of modern delusion, coping, and loss. It starts like a lament playing in a broken jukebox, before the weirdness and vulnerability of it all places it firmly in today’s world.

“Swedish hard-rock band formed by the mysterious Syrék Ball and his two older brothers”… γράφει τοdiscogs καιάιντε να πάρεις γραμμή μετά. Τέλος πάντων στο χώρο του occult rock στον οποίον ανήκουν, καταφανώς, και οι Ball, δεν είναι ν’ ασχολείσαι με το παραμέσα, καθότι έτσι χάνεται κάτι από τη… μαγεία και το απόκρυφο του πράγματος. Τ’ αφήνεις λοιπόν αυτά τα… τελετουργικά κατά μέρος και μένεις σ’ εκείνο, που, σε πρώτη φάση, ενδιαφέρει. Στη μουσική, και στο κατά πόσον αυτή μπορεί να αποδειχθεί λειτουργική μέσα στη σύγχρονη καθημερινότητα.

Ε λοιπόν εγώ θα πω πως οι Ball (δηλαδή ο F.S. Ball μπάσο, ο M.F. Ball ντραμς και ο S. Yrék Ballκιθάρες, φωνή) είναι ένα πάρα πολύ καλό συγκρότημα τού… ψυχεδελοπρογκ-hard rock, κουβαλώντας την παράδοση και την ουσία των μεγάλων γκρουπ του παρελθόντος, που επένδυσαν στις… λειτουργίες του Σατανά, ξεκινώντας από τους Coven και τους Black Widow και φθάνοντας μέχρι τους Devil Doll και τους Segno Del Comando… για να μην πάω πιο κάτω.

Μάλιστα, συχνά συνδέουν αυτές τις αναφορές με τον σουηδικό ήχο εταιρειών όπως η Xotic Mindκαι η Subliminal Sounds(που φαίνεται πως έχει βάλει κι εδώ το χεράκι της), μιας και όταν τα passages ελαφραίνουν μοιάζει ν’ ακούς κάτι από S.T. Mikael ή Word of Life. Το δε παίξιμο, η έμπνευση και το συνολικότερο δόσιμο, έτσι όπως διαμορφώνονται στα έξι κομμάτια του LP/CD, που είναι το ένα καλύτερο από το άλλο, είναι εκείνα ακριβώς που θα σε κάνουν να αναφωνήσεις… ναι, οι Ball έβγαλαν ένα από τα καλύτερα ροκ άλμπουμ, που μπορείς, τώρα, ν’ ακούσεις τριγύρω.

Δισκάρα! Κοινώς, ό,τι πρέπει να συμβαίνει με κάθε άλμπουμ, που θέλει να σέβεται τα φράγκα τού αγοραστή του…

Ry Cooder understands that a great song is a great song, whether it was written before the Depression or last week. Still, at the same time he isn’t afraid to explore new avenues and possibilities for the material. Like his three previous records, Paradise and Lunch is filled with treasures which become part of a world where eras and styles converge without ever sounding forced or contrived. One may think that an album that contains a traditional railroad song, tunes by assorted blues greats, and a Negro spiritual alongside selections by the likes of Bobby Womack, Burt Bacharach, and Little Milton may lack cohesiveness or merely come across as a history lesson, but to Cooder this music is all part of the same fabric and is as relevant and accessible as anything else that may be happening at the time.

No matter when it was written or how it may have been done in the past, the tracks, led by Cooder’s brilliant guitar, are taken to new territory where they can coexist. It’s as if Washington Phillips’ “Tattler” could have shared a place on the charts with Womack’s “It’s All Over Now” or Little Milton’s “If Walls Could Talk.” That he’s successful on these, as well as the Salvation Army march of “Jesus on the Mainline” or the funky, gospel feel of Blind Willie McTell’s “Married Man’s a Fool,” is not only a credit to Cooder’s talent and ingenuity as an arranger and bandleader, but also to the songs themselves.

The album closes with its most stripped-down track, an acoustic guitar and piano duet with jazz legend Earl “Fatha” Hines on the Blind Blake classic “Ditty Wah Ditty.” Here both musicians are given plenty of room to showcase their instrumental prowess, and the results are nothing short of stunning. Eclectic, intelligent, and thoroughly entertaining, Paradise and Lunch remains Ry Cooder’s masterpiece.

Mastered from the original master tapes and strictly limited to 2000 numbered copies, this audiophile reissue boasts dead-quiet surfaces, superb transient response, front-to-back soundstaging, and an organic immediacy that heightens the enjoyment, character, and craft of the arrangements.
