SHAKEN is no record of ‘work-in-progress’ status, it is Hannah Johnson doing what she does best and very well. It is ready made to jump onto your turntable, slide into your CD player or find a prominent position on your device (filed under ‘country’ of course).
Elsewhere on the album, a version of Charley Patton’s ‘Trouble in Mind’ and a delightful rendition of ‘West Texas Lullaby’ make substantial cases for being high spots. Standards rarely dip throughout the near forty-minute spin of this album, which gets its UK bow in early July before Hannah heads to Austin to push it further including a launch night at the famed Continental Club.
Alongside Hannah’s trademark husky vocals and the stellar complete line up of pickers, players and harmonisers, credit must also be guided towards the pedal steel playing of Birmingham’s own legend in this field: Stewart Johnson. His upfront backing role on this instrument has always been a delight to witness, especially when his two daughters took the Toy Hearts general sound away from Bluegrass and into a heavily Bob Wills influenced Western Swing direction. Of course, the music of the Texas music pioneer is celebrated on this record with a version of ‘Sooner or Later’.

Los Angeles’s prodigal songwriting son Ariel Pink shares his eleventh studio album, Dedicated to Bobby Jameson, September 15.
The album’s title makes a direct and heartfelt reference to a real-life L.A. musician, long presumed dead, who resurfaced online in 2007 after 35 reclusive years to pen his autobiography and tragic life story in a series of blogs and YouTube tirades. “His book and life resonated with me to such a degree,” Pink states, “that I felt a need to dedicate my latest record to him.”
Dedicated to Bobby Jameson begins at the end and ends at the beginning. “We follow the protagonist through a battery of tests and milestones, the first of which sees him reborn into life out of death,” Pink explains, referencing the opening track “Time To Meet Your God.” “From there, he seesaws his way between the innocent love and the rock-solid edifice of childhood-worn trauma that together constitute his lifelong initiation into the realm of artifice and theatrical disposability.”

The first posthumous release from late Suicide singer Alan Vega will arrive this July, a year after the proto-punk pioneer died at the age of 78.
Vega worked on the nine-track IT alongside his wife and frequent collaborator Liz Lamere from 2010 until his death in July 2016.
For the album, Vega “religiously consumed” global news programs and took late-night walks around his native New York City, with the singer recording sounds and taking photographs that would serve as IT’s lyrical foundation.

The unlikely union of Suicide’s Alan Vega, Big Star’s Alex Chilton, and singer-songwriter Ben Vaughn happened in December 1994 in a fog of cigarette smoke at two barely-lit, all-night improv sessions at Dessau Studios in New York. What transpired was the group’s only release, a brilliant album called Cubist Blues. Some kind of alchemy happened. The elements are disparate – Vega, known for Suicide’s grinding, pre-industrial drone, Chilton for his ultra-melodic FM rock, and Vaughn for his outsider art. Put together, what came out was something totally unexpected, a long, mesmeric incantation built on Elvis-meets-Ian Curtis vocals, rockabilly guitar, growling synthesizers, and metronomic drums.

On Feeling the Space, Yoko Ono took complete control of her product for the first time. John Lennon only played as a side musician on one cut, with the rest of the songs ably abetted by some of New York’s finest studio cats. This is a feminist record dedicated to “the sisters who died in pain and sorrow for being unable to survive in a male society.” The best term to describe the music here is “angry.” Ono finds no love or sweetness where the male population is concerned, and it shows. Shortly after this was released, however, Ono reconciled with John, and son Sean Lennon was born. But here, her anger comes through loud and clear. The 1997 CD reissue has two previously unreleased bonus cuts: “I Learned to Stutter/Coffin Car,” a combination feminist monologue/song, and “Mildred, Mildred,” both of which feature John Lennon on acoustic guitar.
