Southern Culture On The Skids’ new studio album, The Electric Pinecones, will be released September 16th on the band’s own imprint, Kudzu Records. Featuring a dozen original tunes — 11 brand new songs and a whole-lotta NOLA remake of the SCOTS classic, “Swamp Fox”, the record will be available on CD and as a digital download. A limited edition translucent turquoise vinyl LP will be available in November 2016.

“The Pinecones was our folk-a-billy garage band alter ego,” singer-guitarist Rick Miller explains. “In the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, we would occasionally open up for ourselves as The Pinecones. What we played was not your typical SCOTS fare; more ‘60s west coast psych, folk and country. Those old set lists became the starting point for this record, The Electric Pinecones.”

Willie Nelson maybe have famously written the rascally romantic ballad “You Were Always on My Mind,” but Future Lives up that ante on their new song, “The Strangest Dreams.” One of its best lyrics: “I didn’t call because you knew I loved you / I penned a tune for you instead.” It’s a standout line among many on their new LP, Mansions.
The Athens, Georgia Americana supergroup — composed of members from King of Prussia, Drive-By Truckers and Japancakes — added eight more musicians to their core six members to make the album’s recording sessions heavily stacked. And yet, “The Strangest Dreams” is a deeply intimate, bare-bones acoustic number. With it and more boisterous songs like the steadily escalating opener “Kazakhstan” and the rip-roaring joyous midway track “St. John’s Fair,” Future Lives showcase a richly varied range.

Other highlights include the punchy percussion and congregation choir ohs before the chorus of “Dancin’ with the Stars”; the heart-wrenching Gospel backing vocals on “Continental Drift Divide”; the declarative singing and Celtic guitar rhythms on “Quotes”; and the breezy strumming, hummable chorus and soothing harmonica on “Stumble On.”

Then there are the lyrics. The prospect of winding down a country road and vanishing out of sight is turned into a chorus and a romantic proposal on “Vanishers,” while lines like “You say religion does your head in” captivate on “Dancin’ With the Stars.” Perhaps best of all is the comparatively economic couplet “I took her to the city hall / I took her to the Berlin Wall,” which lends “Kazakhstan” a compelling evocativeness.

It all adds up to a dynamic and wide-ranging collection of songs from one of the Americana genre’s most promising up-and-coming groups.

Paging Mr. Proust finds The Jayhawks still remain one of America s foremost rock bands: based around leader Gary Louris gift for melody that has made them such a respected and seminal group for almost three decades. Paging Mr. Proust features the long-time core of the Jayhawks: Gary Louris (lead vox/guitars), Marc Perlman (bass), Tim O Reagan (drums/vox), and Karen Grotberg (keyboards/vox).From the jangle of album opener Quiet Corners & Empty Spaces to the trademark harmonies of Isabel s Daughter to the more pensive Lover Of The Sun , it is clear that The Jayhawks power remains undiminished from their initial national impact, 1992 s Hollywood Town Hall.

Dr. John has spent so much time turning out perfectly enjoyable but interchangeable records that it may be easy to forget the spooky voodoo vibes of his earliest, arguably best, records. He may have forgotten it himself, too, but there was a whole generation of British musicians, from Modfather Paul Weller to Spaceman Jason Pierce to the teenaged punks in Supergrass, who remembered the haunted vibe lurking in Gumbo and Gris-Gris. Citing his name in interviews, covering his songs, and enlisting him as a session musician (Mr. Rebennack played on Spiritualized’s acclaimed 1997 album, Ladies and Gentlemen, We Are Floating in Space), they created a buzz around Dr. John and were more than willing to play on Anutha Zone, hopefully generating some sales for him in return. As should be expected from any project that is a marketer’s dream, the collaborations occasionally seem awkward, but what is surprising is how often it works. Pierce helps Rebennack conjure the psychedelic R&B of his earlier albums, while Weller and Supergrass help keep things cooking; furthermore, members of Primal Scream and Portishead help make “Sweet Home New Orleans” a titanic workout. The Brits aren’t as funky as the classic New Orleans musicians, but they are willing to push Dr. John into his best work in years. Anutha Zone isn’t a perfect album by any means, but it’s Rebennack’s most ambitious and rewarding album in many a year.

Singer/songwriter Don Gibson was one of the most popular and influential forces in ’50s and ’60s country, scoring numerous hit singles as a performer and a songwriter. Gibson’s music touched on both traditional country and highly produced country-pop, which is part of the reason he had such a broad audience. For nearly a decade after his first hit single, “Sweet Dreams,” in 1956, he was a reliable hitmaker, and many of his songs have become country classics — they have been covered by a wide range of artists, including Patsy Cline, Ray Charles, Kitty Wells, Emmylou Harris, Neil Young, and Ronnie Milsap.
