Continuing the celebration of the legendary Americana band’s 50 years of making music together, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s extraordinary career is encapsulated in the new retrospective two-disc set, Anthology, due September 29 via Capitol Nashville/UMe. Beginning with ‘Buy For Me The Rain,’ their first track from their 1967 self-titled Capitol records debut, and culminating with ‘The Resurrection’ from their most recent studio release, 2009’S Speed of Life, the all-encompassing collection is an extensive 39-track career overview, which includes illuminating liner notes from renowned journalist and author Holly Gleason. Hanna says, ‘We really wanted this collection to historically reflect our band’s timeline, but in addition to that, felt like it was important to include deeper cuts (‘Fish Song,’ ‘Cosmic Cowboy’) and instrumentals (‘Randy Lynn Rag,’ ‘Midnight at Woody Creek’), and fan favorites (‘Ripplin’ Waters,’ ‘Bayou Jubilee’).

Previously unreleased out-takes and re-workings of songs recorded between 1980 and 1997 by cult ‘Canterbury Scenists’ KEVIN AYERS and LADY JUNE along with their sparring partner, guitarist OLLIE HALSALL measure their mutualism, originality and independence of spirit to the full.
Recorded in Deia, Majorca (and various places in between), they come back together here, posthumously as THE HAPPENING COMBO, the name given to a 1980 photo of Ollie, Kevin and Marvin Siau (the curator of this release) taken outside Kevin’s house in the hills of Majorca, one hot summer’s day.

True Colors is a stylistically vivid collection of songs filled with purpose and mood. With an intent to use the banjo as a medium of personal expression, Clowes moves through varied modes of musical treatments. Clowes has recorded an album of almost all original material out of a desire to bring her own music to life.
Gina is accompanied by some musicians she credits as being “family and friends” that include acclaimed bass player Marshall Wilborn, guitar phenom Chris Luquette and mandolin ace Jack Dunlap. Gina’s sister Malia Furtado joins
them as well on fiddle and vocals. In addition, there are special guest performances by well-known players and singers in Gina’s music community Mark Stoffel, Victor and Thomas Furtado, Chris Sexton, and others.
This recording includes only one cover song, a tasteful version of Nina Simone’s “Beautiful Land” that syncopates Gina’s delicate vocal treatment with a melodic banjo line and concludes the album. Clowes’ innovative and unique musicianship and songwriting, although based in traditional music modalities, breaks free from the assumed constructs and makes a new musical statement that’s influenced by emotion, is played with the highest skill, and expresses an enormous verve and vitality!
