Leo “Bud” Welch Sr. was born in Sabougla, Mississippi in 1932. Bud picked up a guitar for the first time in 1945. Bud and a cousin would sneak and play the guitar while the actual owner of the guitar (Bud’s older cousin R.C. Welch) was away working. As he became confident in his ability to play guitar, Bud was caught red handed by the owner of the guitar, playing the forbidden to touch instrument. Bud’s older cousin was so impressed with his playing that he gave Bud free reign to continue playing the guitar. By 1947 at age 15, Bud could play well enough to perform publically and garnered the blessing of many elder guitar players. Bud was offered an audition by BB King but could not afford the trip to Memphis. Bud played the Blues continuously until 1975, at that time he converted to playing mostly Gospel, with the Sabougla Voices, which consisted of his sister and a sister-in-law. Bud also played with the Skuna Valley Male Chorus. Bud earned his living by carrying a chain saw up and down the hills and hollows of North Mississippi, logging for 35 years. Leo does not believe that Blues is the devil’s music but a way of expressing the highs and lows of one’s life through song. Bud had played his guitar for close family and friends for over 65 years and remained under the radar, undetected by the vast majority of Blues Aficionados, until April 19, 2013 after being secretly recorded performing at the 50th birthday of his now manger . Leo “Bud” Welch has taken the listening musical world by storm. Leo’s debut album “Sabougla Voices” was released January 7, 2014 just two months before his 82nd birthday and his sophomore album “I Don’t Prefer No Blues” was released on March 24, 2015 just two days after his 83rd birthday.
The great Polyrhythmics of Seattle are back & better than ever in 2017 with their epic album, Caldera. Rich with bold brass and hypnotic percussion, it showcases the instrumental 8-piece’s impossibly tight grooves and virtuoso musicianship as they tear through a singular blend of Funk, Soul, R&B, psychedelic rock, progressive Jazz, and Afrobeat.
“Goldie’s Road” starts Caldera off with a trippy, Blacksploitation style feeling. They add in spacey synth & guitar effects, plus African percussion noises and muted horns in all the right places. The funky flute riding on top gives the tune a groovy elegance. “Spider Wolf” is a high-energy percussive jam. Its expressive brassiness helps the percussion power the song along, and the rest of the band creates a stirring blend that makes…
…the body want to move.
“Marshmallow Man” moves the groove into a stimulating Funk eruption. The wah-wah wiggles hips as the horn and rhythm section burst forth for a final explosion of organ and brass jam down. “Cactus Blossom” blooms sweetly from the edge of Polyrhythmics’ Funk volcano. This mellow, soulful Funk song intrigues the listener, and then builds up a dramatic rhythm before letting you back down again.
“Au Jus” is the longest tune on Caldera at more than 9 minutes. It’s an impressive ride through everything Polyrhythmics excel at. It’s jazzy, funky, soulful, and percussive. Starting off mellow & groovy, it starts to rock out, then finds that groove again. All the players get their chance to root down & get it on this one, as the tune oscillates between heavy & groovy. Then, “Au Jus” turns far-out & spacey. “Journey to Caldera” is a catchy, funky tune. The horn section finds a lively line and the organ get greasy.
“Compound 49” is an especially funky, joyful groove. The name must signify some magic potion that just makes you feel good when you take it because that’s what this tune does. “Dragon Lotion” is a funky, happy, modern Afrobeat groove. The electric piano lines, and then the Latin percussion breakdown make this tune extra diverse and danceable. This song is the most purely Afrobeat sounding tune on Caldera.
“Bowling Green” burns slow and intoxicates the listener with a profound bass line, impressive horn solos, and relentless rhythm. “Lord of the Fries” is a little dark, yet still super funky. Its rolling rhythm and potent percussion breakdown make this tune full of surprises, giving the horn section a platform to wail.
“Vodka for My Goat” is a genre-bending Funk jam full of wah-wah, Afro-Latin percussion, and hair-raising horn stabs. Listen for Ben Bloom’s amazing guitar solo, followed by a killer conga & percussion jam. “Stargazer” ends the album with downtempo, Afrobeat trance. Overall, Caldera is one of my favorite records of 2017 because of its genre-bending jams, and refusal to conform to easy classification.
Personnel: Ben Bloom: Guitars; Grant Schroff: Drums; Nathan Spicer: Keys; Lalo Bello: Percussion; Jason Gray: Bass; Scott Morning: Trumpet; Elijah Clark: Trombone; Art Brown: Sax and Flute

Set against the backdrop of a turbulent civil war, Rhodesian combo Wells Fargo emerged at the vanguard of their country’s mid-’70s heavy rock scene. In retrospect, the irony of the band’s name is not lost on founder/drummer Ebba Chitambo, who first saw it printed on the side of a stagecoach in an American cowboy comic book. Attracted to the Western outlaw image, he was at the time unaware that his funky guitar rock outfit would be sharing their name with a major American financial institution. Along with his like-minded bandmates, guitarists George Phiri and Handsome Mabhiza, and bassist Never Mpofu, Chitambo took inspiration from guitar-based English and American acts like Deep Purple, Jethro Tull, and especially Jimi Hendrix. Melding South African sensibilities…
…with hard rock influence Wells Fargo quickly became a leading light of the country’s burgeoning heavy rock movement thanks in particular to their politically charged signature song “Watch Out.” The covertly coded independence anthem quickly became a live favorite and, as the single snuck through Rhodesian radio sensors, a national rallying cry for the emerging counterculture. During their ’70s rock reign, Wells Fargo were signed to Afro Soul, a South African label run by liberal white Rhodesians sympathetic to the band’s plight. While a long-player never materialized, the band released a smattering of singles throughout the decade and they’re collected here for the first time. Wells Fargo and other acts of the heavy rock movement generally treated records as promotion for their concerts, and what appears on disc is truly a document of a tight live combo preserved in the amber of their moment in time. There are no overdubs and what few guitar effects (wah, echo) there are were obviously part of the band’s live gig as they barrel through highlights like “Love of My Life,” “The Crowd,” and the funky “Love Is the In Thing.”
Curiously, all but one track are sung in English, marking the dichotomy between white rock’s influence and the nation’s battle to end white rule. When independence was finally won in 1980 and Rhodesia became modern-day Zimbabwe, Wells Fargo shifted their musical focus to more traditional African themes, but Chitambo always saw them as a rock band first, and the 11 tracks featured here are a direct document of this unique period in time. — AMG

Building a Beginning, is his sixth album and follow-up to 2013’s wild-eyed self-titled effort. Whereas his last album was a full-body immersion into strident electro and pop sounds, Building a Beginning is Lidell purifying himself in the waters of smooth, earthy psychedelic soul think the subtle low end of Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On, the swirling loveliness of Temptations’ Cloud Nine, and the beatific radiance of Steve Wonder, all imbued with Lidell’s distinctive songwriting touch and impossibly gorgeous vocals. Following a 25th anniversary reissue of Let Me Come Over and shows across the UK and US, Buffalo Tom have announced their first album in 6 years, Quiet and Peace. The album will be released March 2nd 2018 via Scrawny/Schoolkids Records. The album was mixed by John Agnello (Kurt Vile, Sonic Youth, The Hold Steady) and produced by fellow Boston alt-rock legend David Minehan, renowned ex-leader of the Neighborhoods.
“For this record, I wanted to show Chris and Tom Dave’s Woolly Mammoth Studios in Waltham, MA,” says Janovitz. “Dave is a local legend – founding the beloved Neighborhoods when he was a teenager and going on to play in the Replacements and Paul Westerberg’s solo band – he is a tremendously kind and gifted guy.” Janovitz continues,”Woolly reminds me so much of what I loved about really relaxed, vibey studios like the early iterations of Fort Apache in Boston, and places like Dreamland Studio up in Woodstock. Those rooms were responsible for three of our first four records, as well as dozens of other projects. You rarely felt like you were in a pro recording studio watching the clock. And Woolly Mammoth, like the Fort, is filled with an enviable, much-Instagrammed collection of vintage guitars, amps, and other gear.”
