“I don’t know nothing about Southern belles, but I can tell you something about Southern hell,” Adia Victoria sings on “Stuck In The South,” one of a dozen songs that comprise her highly-anticipated debut Beyond The Bloodhounds. On Bloodhounds, Victoria, a South Carolina native who now resides in Nashville, channels the mix of anger, angst, and resentment she felt growing up as the daughter of Seventh Day Adventist parents in a region with which she felt entirely disconnected.

Victoria, who has opened for everyone from Deer Tick to Those Darlins, establishes a presiding sense of isolation from the very beginning of her record, which she opens with a haunting a capella snippet of Ray Charles’ “Lonely Avenue.” From there, the 29 year-old singer/guitarist infuses her despairing tales with an indelible mix of prickly electric blues (“Head Rot”), gothic garage-rock (“Dead Eyes”), introspective R&B (“Mortimer’s Blues”) and darkly-shaded country (“Mexico Blues”). Victoria is a folkie dressed up as a punk, performing with a ferocity that transforms her plaintive, neo-gothic narratives into something resembling anthems.

On Bloodhounds, the harder Victoria works to reckon with the dark Southern demons of her youth, the further she’s pulled back and drawn in by the music she’s discovered along the way: the lonesome wail of Junior Kimbrough, the isolationist cry of Outkast, the mournful lament of Patsy Cline. It’s this push and pull that provides her music’s driving tension.

But beneath her confrontational surface, Victoria is a romantic at heart, searching deeply for connection. On “And Then You Die,” the singer mumbles off a list of ominous life-lessons behind a sinister bass groove. Then the chorus arrives: “These are things I wish my mother told me/ All I ever wanted was her story,” she sings. On her debut, Adia Victoria shows her determination to tell stories that need telling, no matter the cost.

Tasjan’s second solo album and New West Records debut brings to mind all of these scenes, sounds and characters without dwelling too heavily on any particular source. A spectacular guitarist whose career has spanned punk and glam, Los Angeles country-rock and East Nashville alt-country, Tasjan maintains his eclecticism in songwriting that’s equal parts dreamy and droll. “I sing jokes and call ’em songs; nobody knows where they belong,” he intones in the gentle-flowing “On Your Side.” The jangly “A Town Goes Dark” is even more modest: “Ain’t setting the place on fire, but sometimes I can feel the spark,” he sings before breaking into a chorus of “oohs” like a lost member of The Monkees. Like his peer Josh Tillman of Father John Misty fame (whose bassist, Eli Thomson, produced Silver Tears), Tasjan is fascinated with the way people chase dreams of romance and success that they later find deflated or even toxic. But Tasjan is more kind-hearted and a little wiser, with a gentler sense of humor. Novelty-ish songs like the last-call marathon “12 Bar Blues” show real insight into humanity behind the one-liners.

Γράφοντας για τον Blind Willie McTell θα πρέπει να έχουμε κατά νου πως αναφερόμαστε σ’ ένα μέγιστο όνομα της ιστορίας του blues. Οπωσδήποτε επρόκειτο για έναν πραγματικό λαϊκό ποιητή, για έναν έξοχο τραγουδιστή και σίγουρα για έναν διακεκριμένο κιθαρίστα (έπαιζε 12χορδη κιθάρα), για πολλούς ο μεγαλύτερος, που ανέδειξε ποτέ η λαϊκή μούσα στην Αμερική.

Έχουν γραφτεί πολλά για τον Blind Willie McTell, τα βιογραφικά στοιχεία αφθονούν σε όλες τις εγκυκλοπαίδειες (έντυπες και ηλεκτρονικές), όπως άφθονες είναι και οι εκδόσεις με το προπολεμικό υλικό του, το οποίο βρίσκεται πλέον συγκεντρωμένο στους καταλόγους της Yazoo, της Document, της Columbia ή της Wolf.

Εξετάζοντας όμως την περίπτωσή του σε σχέση με το θέμα μας, το blues revival δηλαδή, οφείλουμε να μεγεθύνουμε στις εγγραφές που παρουσίασε στη δεκαετία του ’50, την εποχή, εννοούμε, που επανήλθε στις ηχογραφήσεις, αποτελώντας έναν από τους πρώτους ήρωες της επανάκαμψης. Αυτό βεβαίως ειπώθηκε αργότερα, γιατί όταν το έσχατο άλμπουμ τού McTell έγινε γνωστό, το 1961, ο ίδιος ήταν απών, ώστε να μπορέσει να το στηρίξει και να το επεκτείνει.

Η πρώτη φορά που μπήκε στο στούντιο ο Blind Willie McTell μετά τον πόλεμο ήταν το 1949, τον Οκτώβριο, όταν έπαιξε κιθάρα σ’ ένα 78άρι του Curly Weaver και κυρίως τον Νοέμβριο εκείνης της χρονιάς, όταν έκανε ένα ολόκληρο session για την Atlantic, που κυκλοφόρησε για πρώτη φορά το 1972 (εκείνη την εποχή τυπώθηκαν μόνο τα τραγούδια “Broke-down engine blues / Kill it, kid”, σ’ ένα 78άρι του 1950 υπό το όνομα Barrelhouse Sammy). Το 1950 θα γράψει, μάλιστα, κι άλλο υλικό, μαζί με τον Curly Weaver, για την Regal, που θα γίνει γνωστό, και αυτό, πολλά χρόνια αργότερα. Επί της ουσίας δηλαδή τον είχαν για ξοφλημένο… και κάπως έτσι, απογοητευμένος από την ανυπαρξία αναγνώρισης και σε απόλυτη σχεδόν ένδεια, ο Blind Willie McTellθα φύγει από τη ζωή τον Αύγουστο του 1959 σε κάποιο νοσοκομείο της Georgia.

Όταν έσκασε η είδηση στα σχετικά κυκλώματα ένας blues fan, ονόματι Jan Cox, επικοινώνησε με τον Sam Charters ρωτώντας τον αν τον ενδιέφεραν πληροφορίες για τους bluesmenτης Atlanta. Ο Charters ζήτησε να μάθει αν υπήρχε κάτι σημαντικό για τον Blind Willie, το όνομα του οποίου ξανακουγόταν μετά θάνατον στην πιάτσα. Ο Cox φαίνεται πως είχε ρίξει τη… χρυσή πληροφορία. Κάποιος Ed Rhodes που διατηρούσε δισκοπωλείο στην Atlanta, λυπούμενος προφανώς τον απελπισμένο μουσικό δέχθηκε να τον ηχογραφήσει προς τον Σεπτέμβριο του ’56. Η ιστορία έχει αξία, υπάρχει στο οπισθόφυλλο του άλμπουμ και του CD και δεν γίνεται εδώ και τώρα να την αναπτύξουμε. Το σίγουρο είναι ένα. Η φωνή του θρύλου μουσικού εμφανίζει μια σχετική κόπωση (όχι σπουδαία πράγματα), τα χέρια του όμως «κεντάνε». Το “Last Session” είναι ένα συγκλονιστικό άλμπουμ!

It’s not unusual for artists plying an Americana trade to be likened to such names as Townes Van Zandt, John Prine and Bob Dylan, but the artists in question are usually men. It’s rare for a female singer to attract such comparisons. Vancouver’s Steph Cameron is both an exception and exceptional.

Armed with just an acoustic guitar and occasional harmonica, Daybreak Over Jackson Street is her second album and the first to make it past the Canadian borders. Her debut, the Dylan-referencing Sad-Eyed Lonesome Lady, laid out her stock in trade with a set of songs clearly influenced by the 60s folk movement of Greenwich Village and this follows the same course, albeit with a more considered approach with its sparsely produced, more intimate sound and reflective songs of love, loss and finding hope in dark times, some very personal, others more observational storytelling.

Much draws on her formative years on Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, most specifically the fingerpicked opening number, Daybreak Over Jackson Street, a vignette of morning dawning on one of the city’s less salubrious quarters where “There’s people behind boarded doors, there’s beds and blankets on the floors…gardens gated and fences grown” and the local gangsters hang out “dressed the part from head to toe.” Given the reference to “the way their badges glow” and how the law “issues justice from a whip, sends bullets fired from a clip”, the suggestion is that these are may well be the cops, as corrupt as the politicians who keep the people down. Her voice here, soft, breathy and slightly husky, reminds me of the young Melanie without the dramatics.

Gisteren een dagje Amsterdam, diverse platenzaakjes afgestruind.
Die stad is echt veel te druk hoor, en zeker op zaterdagmiddag. Pijn
in de voetjes van het klunen. Maar het lijden werd beloond, al crate
diggend stuitte ik op twee elpees van Mbaraka Mwinshehe, Ukumbusho
volumes 5 en 6. Wat een mazzel, dankzij Stefan’s Worldservice ken ik
volumes 1,2, 4,7 en 8. Zeer veel dank daarvoor Stefan. Er zijn er een
stuk of 13 geloof ik. En dan vind ik precies 5 en 6, wat een gelukkig
toeval, twee missende volumes. Nu nog een keer
nummer 3 en de hogere nummers.
vol.6 volgt spoedig..

Yesterday I went to Amsterdam to check out some of my favorite
record stores. It is really far too busy in the city folks, and especially
on a saturday afternoon. My feet were hurting after hours of walking.
But the suffering was rewarded, crate digging I stumbled upon two
volumes of Mbaraka Mwinshehe’s Ukumbusho series, 5 and 6. How
very lucky, due to Stefan’s Worldservice blog I already knew volumes
1,2,4,7 and 8. Much obliged Stefan. There must be about 13 volumes
in total I believe. And I find exactly numbers 5 & 6, two missing
volumes, what great coincidence. Now we must get lucky a few
times more and find no.3 and the higher numbers.
Vol. 6 is soon to follow..
