Originally available at his shows as a limited edition release, ‘Live at the 12 Bar’ was recorded in 1995 at the legendary London music venue and is a fitting tribute not only to Bert’s virtuosity but to the renowned hub that supported folk music and other genres. The set brings together songs from ‘When The Circus Comes To Town’, that was released in the same year, along with the haunting reworking of ‘Blues Run The Game’ (written by Earth’s own Jackson C. Frank) and traditional folk songs ‘Curragh Of Kildare’ and ‘Lily Of The West’ which were staples in Jansch’s repertoire.

Bert’s meticulous performance captures an intimate gig that’s rich and brought to life by his spellbinding ability to hold a room. The warmth and silence from fans reminds us of what it was like to attend his shows and the true legend that we have lost.

In view of this broad range of activities it was not such a big surprise after the EURYTHMICS” (temporary) split to see DAVE STEWART pull THE SPIRITUAL COWBOYS out of his hat in 1990, a band that musically had little to nothing in common with the synth pop of his duo with Annie Lennox. Three guitars! Two drum kits! Up to now, that was only known from southern rock/ jam bands like THE ALLMAN BROTHERS, GRATEFUL DEAD and LYNYRD SKYNYRD. Behind one of the drum sets sat Martin Chambers whom STEWART had borrowed from Chrissie Hynde (PRETENDERS) – if Chambers did not hurry to the front edge of the stage to shake the maracas or sing backing vocals. Guitarist John Turnbull, too, with a history of being in IAN DURY & THE BLOCKHEADS was not an unknown figure within this seven person line-up. Yet, in all the coolness: On the big stage DAVE STEWART and the SPIRITUAL COWBOYS are full power on immediately, unfolding their massive wit with the first Rickenbacker riff of the opener ‘Love Child’ — to draw on their full potential of repertoire during the following 80 or so minutes. The very BOWIE-esk ‘Soul Years’ is standing besides the wistful memory ‘This Little Town’ for that STEWART even unpacks his harmonica. The gospel inspired hymn ‘Love Shines’ lifts off no less (but totally different) than the smooth blue-eyed soul of ‘Jack Talking’ that not only reminds with its title of the best funky times of the brothers Gibb. The epic ‘Heaven & Earth’ finds its natural place here as well as the glam rock overtones of ‘Fashion Bomb’ and the psychedelic wall of sound of ‘On Fire’. And how much the man enjoyed playing his Fender Stratocaster extensively! Not only in the track ‘The Devil’s Just Been Using You’.

Fresh Cream is the debut studio album by Cream released in 1966. It was the first LP release of producer Robert Stigwood’s new “Independent” Reaction Records label, released in the United Kingdom as both a mono and stereo version on 9 December 1966, the same time as the single release of “I Feel Free”. The album was released a month later, in January 1967, in the United States by Atco Records in both mono and stereo versions. For many years, only the UK and U.S. stereo mixes were available in CD. The UK mono album was reissued on CD for the first time in late 2013, as part of a deluxe SHM-CD and SHM-SACD sets (both editions also contain the UK stereo counterpart) sold only in Japan. The album peaked at No. 6 on the UK album chart and No. 39 on the U.S. album chart. In 2003, the album was ranked number 101 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

Included in the Fresh Cream reissue are three CDs featuring mono and stereo mixes of the original album – plus singles from the period, alternate takes and outtakes, early EPs and BBC session recordings. The fourth disc consists of Blu-ray audio versions of the mono and stereo mixes, plus bonus tracks. All told, the set includes nearly 100 tracks, and is fleshed out with a hardback book filled with essays and photos.

Journeyman singer/guitarist Eric Bibb has made a career out of inspired collaborations and displaying the kind of versatility that can only be learned from traveling the world with ears open. A New York bluesman with a classic folk pedigree — his father was respected 1960s folksinger Leon Bibb — Eric opted to base himself out of Europe, where he found a fan base eager to embrace American roots music. At one point, while living in Helsinki, Finland, he befriended brothers Janne (drums) and Olli Haavisto (Dobro, pedal steel), who then introduced him to Petri Hakala (mandolin). After collaborating on a number of projects together, this Finnish trio soon took on the name the North Country Far when backing up Bibb. For this pastoral and pleasantly laid-back set, Bibb also reached out to legendary British bassist Danny Thompson (Pentangle, Nick Drake, Tim Buckley), and the extended group met up at a rural U.K. studio near Norfolk called the Grange for a week of recording. An all-acoustic mixed bag of country blues, folk, and some high-grade picking, The Happiest Man in the World is brimming with warmth and comfort. A breezy back-porch feeling extends throughout its somewhat lengthy 15 tracks as Bibb and his crew tumble through playful cuts like “I’ll Farm for You” and “Born to Be Your Man,” a pair of tracks whose casual demeanor belies their expert musicianship. A good-natured tenderness underlies many of Bibb’s characters, like the amiable couples in “Creole Café” and “On the Porch” and the upbeat dreamer in “King Size Bed.” Where he really excels, though, is on some of the quieter, more introspective songs like “Prison of Time” and “Wish I Could Hold You Now,” two beautiful cuts of dreamy melancholia that softly celebrate the richness of life. There are even a couple of fine instrumental pieces in “1912 Skiing Disaster” and the Irish tin whistle-aided “Blueberry Boy” that round out the collection. Lovingly played and written and certainly easy on the ears, The Happiest Man in the World is an apt title for this plate of musical comfort food from Bibb and his band.

CHARMING TIMUR: So Far So Good [Private Pressing, 2017]

Charming Timurείναι κάτι σαν γκρουπ, αλλά στην πράξη είναι ένας, Φινλανδός μάλλον, ο Lauri Santeri Lohi. Όχι δεν πρόκειται για… one-man band, αλλά για κάποιο μουσικό που παίζει κιθάρες, μπάσο, ντραμς σε διαφορετικές στουντιακές στιγμές (εννοείται) και που σε κάποια tracksτού πιο πρόσφατου CD του συνεργάζεται και με… κανονικούς μουσικούς (μπασίστα και ντράμερ).

Πώς να χαρακτηρίσεις, τώρα, το “So Far, So Good”, που αποτελεί συλλογή από προηγούμενες δουλειές τού Charming Timur(πέντε δικά του άλμπουμ καταγράφονται στο discogs); Δύσκολο. Και τούτο, γιατί ο Φινλανδός ανακατεύει πολλά σκληρά ιδιώματα, προκειμένου να ετοιμάσει το δικό του (σκληρό) προϊόν.

Πάνκικα λοιπόν και ακόμη «μεταλλικά», πειραματικά και noisy στοιχεία παρατάσσονται στα περισσότερα από τα tracksτού “So Far, So Good” και τα οποία συγκροτούν ένα κάπως στομφώδες και επικό περιβάλλον (ουδεμία σχέση με stoner και τα συναφή πάντως).

Έχει ενδιαφέρον η τραγουδοποιία του Charming Beat. Και μουσικά, μ’ όλο αυτό το ηχητικό παρανάλωμα που προτείνει, αλλά και στιχουργικά – με τα δικά του υπαρξιακά, ερωτικά λόγια κ.λπ., που δεν είναι κοινότοπα και που σε συνδυασμό με τις πενιές του, και όλον τον υπόλοιπο «πανικό», συντελούν προς ένα προσωπικό και σίγουρα διαφορετικό αποτέλεσμα. Ακόμη και τα φωνητικά τού τύπου έχουν κάτι το… ακατάστατο (βγαλμένα από την κόλαση του black metal, αλλά όχι πάντα), χαρακτηριστικά προφανώς (και τούτα) μιας ιδιότροπης και όχι αναμενόμενης περίπτωσης.

THE NEW SPRING: Wholly Wholly [Tambourhinoceros, 2017]

Όπως στην προηγούμενη περίπτωση έτσι και σε τούτην εδώ πίσω από το όνομα New Springκρύβεται ένας μουσικός (με βοήθειες στο στούντιο) και όχι ένα γκρουπ. The New Spring είναι ο δανός songwriter Bastian Kallesøe (τραγουδά, παίζει κιθάρα και πλήκτρα), ο οποίος έχει κυκλοφορήσει τέσσερα άλμπουμ μέχρι σήμερα – με το τέταρτό του να αποκαλείται “Wholly Wholly”.

O Kallesøe γράφει μπαλάντες –το άλμπουμ του, δηλαδή, είναι με τον έναν ή τον άλλον τρόπο folk– τις οποίες ενορχηστρώνει για τα όργανα που χειρίζεται ο ίδιος βασικά, ασχέτως αν στο τελικό mixακούγονται και άλλα «χρώματα» (μπάσο, έγχορδα, φωνητικά, κρουστά…). Μερικές δε απ’ αυτές τις μπαλάντες, όπως η “The moon”, φλερτάρουν με την ποπ, ενώ άλλες… δηλαδή η εξής μία “Ballad of the unseeing eye” έχει δεκάλεπτη διάρκεια, δίχως πάντως να ψυχεδελίζει.

Έχει τον τρόπο του ο Kallesøe να γράφει σύγχρονα τραγούδια, χρησιμοποιώντας παλαιά υλικά και αυτό δεν είναι πάντα εύκολο. Ιδίως για το folk, που έχει συγκεκριμένες νόρμες (ακόμη και όταν γίνεται ηλεκτρικό) και τις οποίες (νόρμες) ο Δανός επιχειρεί, με γούστο και γνώση, να τις μεταλλάξει. Ας πούμε ότι τα καταφέρνει – αν και λείπει από το άλμπουμ του ένα αληθινά μεγάλο τραγούδι.
