This 3 CD set includes radio broadcasts transmitted during this initial period of Tom Waits career, and features complete live performances recorded in; 1975 at the studios of KRQS FM, Minneapolis, featuring just Tom alone at his piano; in December 1976 at Media Sound Studios – another in studio session during which, between numbers, Tom is interviewed by the station presenter; and in 1977, back in the big apple at the famous, My Father s Place venue, out on Long Island.

This 5CD limited edition boxed set with 87 tracks is being released in Japan in conjunction with Bob’s April 2016 tour there, and also to celebrate his 75th birthday. The set was compiled by Kenta Hagiwara, who also wrote the liner notes, with lyrics translated by Goro Nakagawa (English lyrics for some songs aren’t included “by the artist’s intention”). The publicity says this is the first Dylan compilation exclusively released by Sony Music Japan, but this is very much untrue! There have been many exclusive Japanese releases from the 1960s onwards.

Although Chip Taylor is most famous for writing two especially iconic songs, that is only part of the story, as The New York Times wrote: “If you only know him as the as the guy who wrote ‘Wild Thing’ and ‘Angel of the Morning’ — you don’t know him! Chip Taylor is making some of the most distinctive acoustic music around today.” With the release of Fix Your Words, he continues to create timeless, thought-provoking music.

The 11 all-original songs on Fix Your Words feature two distinct sides. The amazing title track leads side A through the quiet, reflective batch of prayerful thoughts. Side B, subtitled “When I Was a Kid,” is an inspired meditation on the power of memory and sadness and features some of the most emotional and affecting songs of Taylor’s lifetime of songwriting.

As with Taylor’s The Little Prayers Trilogy (Mojo called it “a masterpiece;” while Uncut said it was “the crowning glory of a storied career” and placed it on its Best of 2015 list), the new album was co-produced by keyboardist Goran Grini. It also features Chip’s longtime compadre, master guitarist John Platania (Van Morrison), as well as drummer Tony Leone and bassist Tony Mercadante.
Chip shared these notes he wrote on the writing and recording of Fix Your Words: CHIP TAYLOR: The first songs I wrote for Fix Your Words were written pretty much how I usually write. Which is: I strum guitar chords. The chords and tempos are not predetermined. I keep my mind blank. I let emotion move my fingers. When some emotion appears in some form (words or sounds) that physically send a chill through my body (one that embraces me in the warmest way), I play that emotion again, recording it on my iPhone without trying to make any sense of it.

If the chill is still there, it’s exciting to see where the emotion/song is going. I try to keep my brain out of it as much as possible…using it in the final stages to make a bit of sense out of it. But if the chill is strong without a great deal objective “sense,” that’s fine with me. When I’m prolific, the chills come often. They have been coming often these last several years. That’s a rewarding thing for me, as it brings a sense of peace.

Looking back, these songs seem to be prayerful in nature, maybe a continuation of emotions from my “Little Prayers Trilogy” album from a few years ago.

Then I wrote “When I Was a Kid,” a song that reflects my memory of the power of the Motorola radio that lived in the hallway outside the Voight boys’ bedroom and the kitchen. It was a strong reminder of the love I have for sad songs. After I wrote it, I let some minutes pass, then got in a quiet space with guitar in hand and got totally brain silent, letting a specific tough emotion of sadness come over me.

As that happened, “When He Goes…He Goes” wrote itself in minutes. The chill was so strong in that song that the specific emotion of certain words from it inspired two other songs, “Crazy Dreams Crazy” and “You Just Think You’ve Changed Your Mind.” In other words, the last two songs are actually songs within a song. I don’t remember doing that before and I love the effect. The chill stays strong for me stays throughout the entire group.

Because the two groups of songs for the Fix Your Words album were written in such a different emotional manner, I decided to let them have their own grouping title, Side A and Side B. Even though the number of songs is unbalanced, it felt like they needed to be separate in some way and reflect exactly the spirit of each group.

LÈCHE MOI: S/T [Atypeek Diffusion / Pied de Biche, 2018]

Οι Lèche Moi είναι Γάλλοι και είναι δύο… συν ένα rhythm box. Ένας άντρας που παίζει μπάντζο(!) και μια γυναίκα που τραγουδάει. Υπάρχουν και βοήθειες σε ακορντεόν, κιθάρες κ.λπ., αλλά το πράγμα δεν αλλάζει. Εννοώ πως η εκφραστική λιτότητα των Γάλλων είναι δεδομένη και είναι εκείνη που τους οδηγεί σ’ αυτό το ακατάτακτο electro, που μερικές φορές μοιάζει σαν τραβηγμένο από τα μαλλιά, αλλά μερικές άλλες έχει μια «βελβετική» απογειωτική αύρα, που σε στέλνει. Το CD τους είναι EP βασικά, με έξι tracks, δηλαδή ένα 7λεπτο και έξι 2λεπτα και 3λεπτα.

Το μεγάλο κομμάτι, που έχει τίτλο “Jennifer” έχει τη σκοτεινιά της «μπανάνας», με την τραγουδίστρια να έχει οπωσδήποτε τη Nicoγια φάρο (χωρίς αυτό να σημαίνει πως την μιμείται), ενώ τα μικρά είναι λιγότερο αποδεκτά, χοντρικά, από το «μέσο αυτί», καθώς σ’ αυτά περιλαμβάνονται κάτι αποστασιοποιημένες μπαλάντες, κάτι αργά τελετουργικά ασμάτια ολίγον παρακμιακά, και κάτι πιο γρήγορα, πάντα με το rhythm box μπροστά, που φέρνουν στη μνήμη μου εκείνα τα πρωτόλεια, ανάλογα, που έκανε στις αρχές του ’70, ο Arthur Brown με τους Kingdome Come (“Journey”). Εντάξει. Ενδιαφέρον υπάρχει.

THE SHADOW LIZZARDS: S/T [Tonzonen Records]

Γερμανοί, από την Νυρεμβέργη, είναι οι Shadow Lizzards – μια κλασική hard progressive τριπλέτα, με τραγουδιστή-μπασίστα, που παίζει και όργανο, και ακόμη κιθαρίστα και ντράμερ. Η μπάντα διαθέτει δικές της συνθέσεις, δέκα στον αριθμό στο CD (στο LP καταγράφονται εφτά) με υπαινιγμούς από Warhorse, Epitaph, Blackwater Park, Birth Control, Lucifer’s Friend, Baker Gurvitz Army και τα ρέστα. Κάπως περίεργος για το σήμερα αυτός ο ήχος, που είναι φυσικά στιβαρός και γαμάτος, αλλά κάπως… περιθωριοποιημένος από τα σύγχρονα συγκροτήματα, που όταν δεν είναι στονεράδικα, είναι progressiveμε τρόπους που σηκώνουν συζήτηση. Το rock των Shadow Lizzards δεν σηκώνει κουβέντα όμως. Είναι γερά πακτωμένο στα διδάγματα του παρελθόντος, με το όργανο και την κιθάρα να μάχονται απέναντι σε… κοινούς εχθρούς, αλλά και μεταξύ τους, και με το μπάσο-ντραμς ν’ ακούγονται διαρκώς σαν ποδοβολητό, σκορπώντας παντού πανικό και σύγχυση. Αν δεν είχαν καλές συνθέσεις-τραγούδια οι Γερμανοί (Jochen Leistner, Oliver Pfeiffer, Simon Schnellinger) δεν θα υπήρχε λόγος ν’ ασχοληθούμε. Ούτε βεβαίως αν ακούγονταν, απλώς, σαν ρέπλικα των… μεγάλων παλαιών. Με την περίπτωσή τους, όμως, συμβαίνει ακριβώς το αντίθετο. Τα τραγούδια τους είναι το ένα καλύτερο από το άλλο, οι «συνομιλίες» των οργάνων ποτέ δεν είναι βαρετές, ενώ και η η ηχογράφηση με την παραγωγή διαθέτουν όλες εκείνες τις ποιότητες, που είναι απαιτητές από μια rock δουλειά του σήμερα. Μπράβο στα παιδιά! Α… και κάτι που παρ’ ολίγο να το ξεχάσω. Οι Shadow Lizzards τραγουδάνε στ’ αγγλικά, καλύτερα απ’ όλους τους Γερμανούς των seventies…

PHANTOM WINTER: Into Dark Science [Golden Antenna]

Επίσης Γερμανοί, οι Phantom Winter (Andreas Schmittfull, Björn Granzow, Christian Krank, Christof Rath, Martin Achter αν πάρουμετοις μετρητοίς όσααναφέρει το discogs) είναι έναγκρουπ που κινείταιστο χώρο τουsludge metal – ενός μεταλλικούυποείδους, που συνδυάζει στοιχείαdoomy καιhard core. Το “IntoDark Science” είναι το τρίτο LP/CDτου γκρουπ, καθώς έχουν προηγηθεί τα “Cvlt” (2015) και “Sundown Pleasures” (2016), ένα άλμπουμ… πολλά κιλά σκοτεινό, που δεν είναι όμως της πλάκας. Εννοώ πως οι Γερμανοί παίρνουν πολύ σοβαρά το ρόλο τους κι αν εξαιρέσεις τα φωνητικά αυτού του τύπου, που είναι βεβαίως παλαιά ιστορία κι εμένα προσωπικά μου τη σπάνε, υπάρχει καλό υπόστρωμα εδώ, στίχοι επίσης και αναφορές, για τις οποίες δεν μπορείς να πεις κάτι (κάτι αρνητικό εννοώ). Ναι, η αποξένωση, οι λεγόμενοι «εσωτερικοί δαίμονες» και το γενικότερο σκοτάδι, που μπορεί να καλύπτει σχέσεις, συμπεριφορές κ.λπ. απασχολούν τους Phantom Winter – όπως απασχολούσαν και τις αναφορές τους (Adrienne Rich, Oscar Wilde, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Heinrich Heine, Mary Shelley, Neil Gaiman). Οπωσδήποτε για τους φίλους του είδους, αλλά ίσως και για κάποιους λίγο παραπέρα…
