Angel Olsen has announced My Woman, the follow-up to her excellent 2014 album Burn Your Fire for No Witness. It’s out September 2 on Jagjaguwar. Olsen worked with producer Justin Raisen on the record, recording live to tape at LA’s Vox Studios. Guest guitarist Seth Kauffman joined her regular band lineup of bassist Emily Elhaj, drummer Joshua Jaeger, and guitarist Stewart Bronaugh.

In a press release, Olsen says the album addresses themes surrounding “the complicated mess of being a woman. … I’m definitely using scenes that I’ve replayed in my head, in the same way that I might write a script and manipulate a memory to get it to fit. But I think it’s important that people can interpret things the way that they want to.”

Οι αμερικανοί μουσικοί –ανάμεσά τους κι εκείνοι της jazz φυσικά– ψάχνουν συχνά στο παρελθόν όχι μόνο για να εμπνευστούν, δημιουργώντας καινούριες συνθέσεις κ.λπ., αλλά και για να αποτίσουν φόρους τιμής σε λαϊκά είδη, που ως τέτοια, ως λαϊκά δηλαδή, δεν μπορεί παρά να αφορούν στους πάντες σε κάθε δημιουργικό χώρο. Το πόσο μπορεί να έχουν επηρεάσει την jazz, φερ’ ειπείν, οι ήχοι των παραδοσιακών τραγουδιών των Απαλαχίων, το λευκό blues του ’20, το bluegrassκαι όλα τα… από-κει-και-κάτω παρακλάδια τής γενικότερης country music είναι γνωστό, χοντρικώς, στους μουσικόφιλους – κάτι που, από την άλλη μεριά, δεν γίνεται να ακυρώσει τις σοβαρές προσπάθειες υπενθύμισης όλων τούτων στο διάβα του χρόνου. Πόσω μάλλον όταν η δουλειά που γίνεται σε περιπτώσεις άλμπουμ όπως του Heritage [artiShare, 2017], του σαξοφωνίστα Owen Broder, είναι από ’κείνες που μπορούν να κάνουν αμέσως τη διαφορά.

Σε τι ακριβώς συνίσταται η διαφορά στο “Heritage”; Κατ’ αρχάς στην ιδέα ενός ολοκληρωμένου projectγύρω απ’ αυτήν τη συγκεκριμένη κληρονομιά, που έχει τη σφραγίδα όχι μόνο του Broder και των συνεργατών του, μα και του παραγωγού Ryan Truesdell – ενός νέου ακόμη ανθρώπου με ήδη σοβαρά επιτεύγματα (Gil Evans Project κ.ά.). Έπειτα, στην ουσία αυτού καθ’ αυτού του project, που από τη μια μεριά τιμά το μουσικό παρελθόν, αλλά από την άλλη αρθρώνει μια σύγχρονη πρόταση ανάγνωσής του, με πολλά στοιχεία υψηλού γούστου. Αρκεί ν’ ακούσει κάποιος το πώς διασκευάζονται τα κλασικά “Wayfaring stranger” και “Jambalaya” ή να προσέξει τις μεγαλειώδεις, σε κάποιες περιπτώσεις, πρωτότυπες συνθέσεις-αποδόσεις σαν την “The people could fly” (του τρομπετίστα Alphonso Horne), που περιστρέφεται γύρω από το θέμα της ιστορικής δουλοπαροικίας των Αφρικανών και το πώς, φθάνοντας στην Αμερική, άλλαξαν τη μουσική του Νέου Κόσμου.
Σ’ αυτήν την προσπάθειά του ο Broder, που συνθέτει κιόλας (ακούμε το άνοιγμα και το κλείσιμο του άλμπουμ) δεν είναι μόνος. Έχει δίπλα του αναγνωρισμένους μουσικούς, όπως τον τρομπονίστα Nick Finzer, τον ντράμερ Matt Wilson, τον πιανίστα Frank Kimbrough, τον μπασίστα Jay Anderson, την τραγουδίστρια Kate McGarry, τη βιολίστρια Sara Caswell, αλλά και τις προσφορές στη σύνθεση των  Jim McNeely, Bill Holman, Ryan Truesdell κ.ά. Το αποτέλεσμα όλων αυτών είναι εντυπωσιακό. Το “Heritage” έχει από τη μια μεριά την «ευγένεια» των μικρών combos, των άλμπουμ της Alison Krauss για παράδειγμα, και από την άλλη τη δύναμη και τη συνοχή μιας μεσαίας ορχήστρας, ικανής να αποδώσει «τα πάντα».

Erasure – World Beyond (2018)

Erasure have announced a collaboration with Echo Collective, the Brussels based collective of post-classical musicians best known for their ongoing collaborative work with A Winged Victory for the Sullen, Johann Johannsson, Dustin O’Halloran and Stars of the Lid.

The collaboration sees the entirety of Erasure’s latest album, World Be Gone, given a post-classical rework. World Beyond was recorded over ten days by Andy Bell and seven performers from the Echo Collective: Margaret Hermant (violin, harp), Neil Leiter (viola), Thomas Engelen (cello), Jaroslaw Mroz (double bass), Gary De Cart (piano) and Antoine Dandoy (vibraphone, glockenspiel).

The album was produced by Echo Collective, mixed by Gareth Jones and arranged by the Echo Collective’s Gary De Cart, Margaret Hermant and Neil Leiter. Neil Leiter from the Echo Collective explains, “The process of this project was really deconstruction and re-purposing. We started by listening to each track layer by layer, and then, using the layers that inspired us or we found essential, we reconstructed the tracks instrumentally. Each of the instruments in the band setup were chosen for their inherent capacities and roles. Often choosing which layer to put with each instrument was a question of matching roles and colours. By stripping so much away, we were able to find a new space for Andy to fill. The text of the songs became much more important in the overall construction of the songs, and Andy was free to explore more dynamics and vocal range.”
