…Charlie Kingue Soppo is better known as Charly Kingson, cousin of Manu Dibango and a Cameroonian emigrant in the 1970s. Charly first headed to Paris and then found his way to Munich in 1978. He recorded two albums in his career, Born in Africa in Munich in 1978 and Dance to the Music two years later in New York.
Born in Africa was recorded in Union Studios in Munich with some of the city’s finest (and surprisingly funky) session musicians of the day.
The LP opens up with “Nimele Bolo”, early growling analog synths, big stabby brass and afro rhythms. Add in Charlys vocals and it is easy to see why this track was a highlight of recent African Airways 04 Funk compilation. Next it is time for smooth ballad, “Makakane Masu” and its smooth jazz overtones.
Next “Manyaka” the suspenseful string section, octaving keys and percussive horns drive the wah wah guitar and Charlys brooding song.
On the flip side we open up with the rolling bass and swinging brass of lead track “Born in Africa”. This track was a single and it’s the perfect microcosm of the album elements in one track. It even manages to name check all the big afro musicians of the time. “Nanga Boko” and its big smiles all around for the good time synth-boogie funk. We close off the LP with “Reviens-Moi” a pensive ballad about Charly’s forlorn love. After Charly moved on from recording in the 1980s he stayed in Germany, performing in a series of local jazz and funk bands.

Cicada Rhythm is Andrea DeMarcus and Dave Kirslis. Following their 2015 self-titled debut, the band consciously decided to build upon their homespun, stripped-down folk sound by bringing in more musicians and multiple producers to their latest record, Everywhere I Go. Recorded in a string of studios across the southeast, it’s a snapshot of a band on the move, with new members filling their lineup and a louder set of influences propelling their sound forward. There are roots-rock tunes, slow waltzes, front-porch folksongs and backwoods ballads, all delivered by a group of road warriors who’ve cut their teeth not only in the writing room, but on stage, too. Kenneth Pattengale (Milk Carton Kids) and Oliver Wood (The Wood Brothers) share production duties, giving Everywhere I Go a broad, diverse punch. A sense of forward momentum sweeps its way throughout Everywhere I Go, whose very title conjures up a feeling of movement. DeMarcus and Kirslis write about the country unfolding outside their car window at highway speed, spinning stories not only about people and places, but poli-tics and social struggles, as well. Embracing Everywhere I Go as “a patchwork album,” Cicada Rhythm tracked its 12 songs in recording studios, living rooms, and gospel churches throughout Tennessee and Georgia. The album’s track list blends orchestral folk-pop and ramshackle roots-rock in equal numbers, giving Cicada Rhythm more fuel for their music-filled travels.“We named the album after a line in ‘America’s Open Roads,’ but hopefully, this album will be our ticket to everywhere we go,” explains Kirslis. “Wherever we are, these songs will be with us. For fans of Norah Jones, Hiss Golden Messenger, Houndmouth and The Wood Brothers.

HAWTHORNE HEIGHTS will release “Bad Frequencies”, the band’s first full-length album since 2013, on April 27 via on Pure Noise Records.
Singer and guitarist JT Woodruff states: “We wrote ‘Bad Frequencies’ over the course of a year, which was our longest writing process as a band. We played 170 shows in 2017, wrote every moment that we could, then demoed, then recorded an album. I think we fit everything we possibly could in 365 days, and we are very proud of that.”
Along with the news of the upcoming album and label signing, HAWTHORNE HEIGHTS is premiering “Pink Hearts”, the first single from “Bad Frequencies”. Woodruff says: “If we try, we can stay young forever, but I’m not sure we actually want to. ‘Pink Hearts’ is about burning through relationships, because you are selfishly just having fun when you are young. Eventually you have to wake up and grow up, and hope that you haven’t cut someone too deep.”
“Bad Frequencies” was produced by HAWTHORNE HEIGHTS along with Nick Ingram, and mixed by Cameron Webb (NOFX, SOCIAL DISTORTION). The band previously worked with Ingram on the “Hurt” EP and Webb on “Push Me Away”, which was released last summer ahead of their full run on the Vans Warped Tour.
