Urban’s previous album, 2016’s Ripcord, featured a headline-making collaboration with Pitbull and Nile Rodgers—a statement about his interest in venturing beyond genre boundaries. Here, the country dynamo continues exploring crossover sounds, though perhaps more subtly. “Coming Home” finds singer/songwriter Julia Michaels draping her soprano over a Merle Haggard sample, “Drop Top” takes cues from EDM with an ethereal topline by Kassi Ashton, and summer anthem “Horses” gushes with Bleachers-level energy. The Ed Sheeran-penned “Parallel Line” captures the songwriter’s romantic sensibilities and could very well become Urban’s “Thinking Out Loud.

To celebrate his 85th birthday Willie Nelson releases an album of 11 original songs… there are very few pop luminaries of whom one could write that sentence, perhaps only country’s outlaw king. Nelson has responded to his advancing years by being ever more prolific, spraying out albums by favourite composers, albums of archive material (Willie’s Stash), and albums of new songs, plus countless guest appearances.
This 73rd studio album stands out from the somewhat erratic output, a winning mixture of confessionals, nostalgia and humour, co-written with producer Buddy Cannon. You can rely on Willie to come up with defiant, wisdom-of-age pieces such as Something You Get Through and Bad Breath (“is better than no breath at all”), but there’s also sly wit in the New Orleans shuffle of the title track (“I don’t want to be the last man standing/ Oh wait a minute, maybe I do…”) and Don’t Tell Noah, where Nelson admits he’s “been crazy all the time”.
Nelson and Cannon mix up the musical styles, with a brace of cuts that hark back to the ballroom Western Swing of Nelson’s youth. Willie rattles off his lines with trademark insouciance, as much spoken as sung, and still plays an acoustic guitar with jazzy panache. What a legend.

Brooklyn, New York based power pop troupe, We Are Scientists are set to return with their sixth album on April 27th. Titled MEGAPLEX and released via 100% Records this spring, the infamous duo, Keith Murray (guitar/vocals) and Chris Cain (bass), are once again set to dazzle the world with ten brand new splashes of colorful and utterly addictive pop that serve as a welcome distraction to these bleak times we live in.

“I got a right to say FUCK YOU!!!” is how the new album from veteran guitarist Marc Ribot’s trio Ceramic Dog starts off, with Ribot howling in anger at corruption, tyranny, life in general, and nothing in particular. If you’ve got a serious case of outrage fatigue, Ceramic Dog’s explosive cocktail of balls-to-the-wall abandon, chameleonic disregard for style constraints, political commentary, and absurdist humor is just the shot in the ass (or kick in the arm?) you might need. In fact, Ceramic Dog’s new album — whose title:YRU Still Here? is directed in equal parts at themselves, the commander in chief, and the listening public — arrives just in time to remind us that now is a moment when anger is not only necessary, and unavoidable, but also good for houseplants.
YRU Still Here? careens from punk to funk to flamenco to surf to rock ‘n roll — all turned on their heads and smudged, allowing us to imagine an alternate history where punk icons Jello Biafra and Ian MacKaye fronted no-wave lounge bands on alternate Tuesdays at the Teaneck New Jersey Holiday Inn.
Thanks in no small part to the fire, brimstone, and dextrous facility summoned by kindred spirits Shahzad Ismaily (Secret Chiefs 3, Will Oldham) on bass and drummer Ches Smith (Xiu Xiu, Secret Chiefs 3, Trevor Dunn’s Trio Convulsant), YRU Still Here? comes to the table armed with more than just sloganeering rhetoric. Alongside his monumental career forging his peerless guitar style with the likes of Tom Waits, John Zorn, the Lounge Lizards, etc, Ribot has also worked for decades as a tenant union, labor, and artist rights activist, where he mastered the agit-prop skills used to such dazzling effect on sure-fire hits such as “Fuck La Migra” and “Muslim/Jewish Resistance.”
“Pennsylvania 6 6666” documents Shahzad’s experiences growing up Muslim and Outrageous in Danville Pennsylvania, where “all the children are insane”: rendering these lamentable memories in a cool vaguely Latinoid jazz style all their own (while providing guffaws for Satanists and Glenn Miller fans)!!! By way of explanation, Ribot comments: “Yes, we too are subject to the post-modern condition, although we actually see it as a kind of psoriasis.”
As much as it is a rallying cry, though, YRU Still Here? also further consecrates Ribot’s 10 years of music making with Ismaily and Smith. Referring to them as his “musical conscience” and to the band as a “family…although not always in a good way”. Ribot comments wryly: “Even after all the playing I’ve done, there’s something about this group that still manages to shock me.”

This special set of studio recordings, the first ones to be issued since 2004, gathers up fifteen outtakes from eight different sessions, including two songs from as far back as March 1987 (before the actual formation of the Rhythm Kings). These previously overlooked and unheard gems have been newly mixed for this album by Bill Wyman and Terry Taylor. The booklet contains all the musician credits. It’s a very eclectic selection of songs, from Midnight Oil to Canned Heat to Dan Hicks, via classics by Willie Dixon, Slim Harpo, Jimmie Rodgers, Louis Jordan and Don Covay, and some originals – there’s a solo song by Georgie Fame, “Skiing Blues”, and “Jazz Walk”, a Wyman/Fame co-write.
