Le duo Kala Jula a été formé autour du guitariste suisse Vincent Zanetti et du guitariste malien Samba Diabaté. Ce dernier joue également du jeli n’goni (luth traditionnel). Après « Sangoyi » leur précédent album de 2015 (chroniqué ici même), « Mande Kulu » voit le duo se transformer (provisoirement ?) en quatuor.

La contrebassiste Hélène Labarrière et le violoniste Jacky Molard viennent apporter leur savoir faire à cette nouvelle expérience musicale. Ces deux musiciens sont des habitués des scènes jazz et musiques du monde.

Les compositions sont quasiment toutes signées par Samba Diabaté et Vincent Zanetti et puisent dans les cultures musicales d’Afrique de l’Ouest, mais aussi dans le blues et le jazz. L’apport du violon enrichit considérablement l’univers du duo et des titres comme « Mogoya ji » ou « »La chanson d’Awa » sont de vraies petites perles.

Influenced by artists such as Fugazi, John Lee Hooker, Django Reinhardt and The Pixies, Muddy Ruckus roars through road-sick harmonies and dirty guitar riffs, touching on the sacred, hinting at the profane and encapsulating everything in between, all to the sound of an infectiously toe-tapping backbeat. Vocalist/guitarist Ryan Flaherty sounds a little like Dr. John crossed with early Tom Waits. There’s a dash of Leon Redbone in there too, but with Dylan’s razor-sharp wit. Erika Stahl, equal parts June Carter Cash, Emmylou Harris and bluesy Bonnie Raitt, is a subtle vocal chameleon. Depending on the song, she can sound sassy, heartbroken, wickedly seductive, innocently angelic, tender and comforting, or any combination thereof, making her the perfect vocal foil for Flaherty. They shroud each track in versatile guitar and edgy percussion from the outset. Flaherty is throaty, raw and confessional on main vocals during songs like “Restless Ryder” and title track “Bellows To Mend”. Flaherty and Stahl’s work is distinctive in that the two never overshadow, but rather consistently compliment one another. Listeners can’t help but note the steady, nuanced heartbeat of Stahl’s suitcase drumkit that is the backbone of all Muddy Ruckus’ songs. Her spit fire tempos on “Everlasting Buzz” to her tribal beats on instrumental “Wreck of the Hesperus” grab you by the collar and send a jolt through your bloodstream. It is steadfast, fierce and unswerving.

Tape Waves is one of those band names so perfectly suited for its designees it feels too good to be true. Kim Hart Weldin and Jarod Weldin are a married duo from Charleston, South Carolina, and as Tape Waves, they’ve spent some of the past five years creating wistful, lens-blurred dream pop to soundtrack nostalgia daydreams and sleepy weekend afternoons. Kim sings, Jarod programs drums, both play guitar, and their songs have an easy, calming consistency that’s almost therapeutic. It’s perfect background music, much in the way that a soft, warm bed is the only background you need to drift off.

With a slower average tempo and moody cuts like the title track and “Pale Moon,” Tape Waves’ new album Distant Light is more subdued and melancholy than previous entries in their catalog. (The chirpy, muffled guitars of 2014’s Let You Go made it an effortless-feeling masterwork of slightly out-of-focus dream-pop.) “Sudden Fiction” casts its forlorn melody across warm, amorphous swells and tonal loops, subsuming the wispy vocals until their feeling resonates more clearly than their meaning. “Daisy” sounds as much like Mazzy Star as they ever have. Surely it’s only a matter of time before some enterprising music supervisor or aspiring Sofia Coppola catches on.

Distant Waves is out now from San Diego’s Bleeding Gold Records, and the album artwork is by Kristen Solecki. Tape Waves will play a hometown album release show in Charleston on Monday (June 11), and next month they’ll embark on their first-ever tour of Japan. Fans of the aforementioned Mazzy Star, Tennis, Real Estate, Widowspeak
and anything Captured Tracks ever released.
