Bringing together the tracks from the ‘In the beginning’ and ‘Preflyte’ releases, as well as a number of other unreleased cuts, it is more basic than Mr. Tambourine man, and is definitely pretty standard 60’s pop. Nevertheless, the Mr. Tambourine man versions and the twee David Crosby vocal songs are a nice listen. Some quite different arrangements from the ‘Album’ versions and some great songs that were never recorded officially. This is not the album to discover The Byrds but perfect for those who just can’t get enough of this classic band.

The 18 previously unreleased, solo acoustic performances on this collection were recorded between March 1965 and December 1966. These show Parsons not as a country singer, rock singer, or even folk-rock singer, but very much as a mid-’60s folkie, in the mold of so many artists to be heard in the Greenwich Village scene. There’s no straight country music in his repertoire, comprised largely of covers of songs by then-contemporary writers such as Buffy Sainte-Marie (“Codine”), Tim Hardin, Tom Paxton, and Fred Neil, along with high-caliber compositions that would be popularized by rock groups (Billy Wheeler’s “High Flyin’ Bird” and Hamilton Camp’s “Pride of Man”). There are also five Parsons originals, a few not available elsewhere, and others recorded at other points either by himself (“Brass Buttons” and “Zah’s Blues”) or different performers (“November Nights,” placed on an obscure single by Peter Fonda). A bit of R&B pokes out in his covers of “Searchin'” and “Candy Man.” This disc is definitely of historical interest, if only to demonstrate that Parsons’ roots were certainly not country-soaked, but largely indebted to ’60s folk as well. As music, it’s very average (though certainly not bad) mid-’60s folk, of the kind you might hear by numerous coffeehouse support acts. He sings best on the jazzy “Zah’s Blues,” where he seems to reach further into himself than he does on most of the other material here.

Cowboy Junkies will be known to many given that they have now been performing together for 33 years and were at the forefront of the Americana movement. It’s hard to keep count of the albums they’ve released as they have over 20 to their name, but this is the first studio release for a number of years. The 11 songs on show here break no new ground and are in the laid back and slightly melancholy style that the band are known for.
The album takes some getting into, but spare it the time and it rewards. Of particular note is “Shining Teeth,” a quality song about scratching below the surface to find the real person beneath and “The Possessed” which features little but guitar and lead vocalist Margo Timmins musing about finding the devil. There are two versions of the title track which explores a tumultuous relationship, one reflective and generally quiet whilst the other is brooding with intensity and electric guitar feedback. “The Things We Do To Each Other” is a reflection on humanity as a whole and very much a song of its time. A solid return from one of the genre’s defining bands.

Grammy-winning roots troubadour RODNEY CROWELL announces the July 13th release of his new album, ACOUSTIC CLASSICS, the debut entry from his newly-launched imprint, RC1.
A creative powerhouse with no off switch, the acclaimed songwriter, musician, author and poet is adding yet another title to his already esteemed pedigree; label head. As prolific today, as he was in his twenties, Crowell has released sixalbums in the last ten years. Next on deck is a re-distilled, acoustic presentation of 12 masterfully-crafted tunes from his 40-plus-year career in a truly intimate setting. “With the help of some of my favorite musicians, I’ve made all acoustic instrument recordings of ten of my most recognizable songs. Also included is a couple more recently written that I want people to hear. There’s even a revised version of my most commercially successful song, “Shame on the Moon,” said Crowell. “All in good fun.”
Marking Crowell’s 19th solo effort and the first release from his new label, RC1, the project features songs originally made famous by the likes of Emmylou Harris, Waylon Jennings, The Oak Ridge Boys, Bob Seger, Tim McGraw and more. Peace Town reflects his artistry as well as the emotional elements over the last months of his life in which his medical condition brought issues of mortality, legacy, life and love to the forefront. As such, it stands proudly as one of his best works within a critically-lauded career and made his mark as an interpreter who could take the songs of others and virtually make them his own. Alongside time-tested reinterpretations of two of his own previously released compositions are three numbers LaFave composed to lyrics by his icon, Woody Guthrie, and his interpretations of material by his influences ranging from Chuck Berry to Pete Townshend of The Who to more of what All Music describes as his fantastic work on Bob Dylan s songs on three tracks. The set also includes nods to noted songwriters from Oklahoma – the state where LaFave came of age and started his career – like Leon Russell and J.J. Cale as well as selections from lesser-known but equally gifted writers whose talents he admired. All told, Peace Town celebrates what All Music says was the way he blended country, blues, folk, and early rock & roll, his work ethic, and his low-key rapport with fans were all factors that worked in his favor. And gave everything he recorded, as All Music also observed, a stamp that is indelible. It s tattooed on the inside, on the heart where it belongs.
