he last of the three matching box sets of Genesis’ back catalog, Genesis 1970-1975 offers expanded reissues of every Peter Gabriel era album outside of the earliest, From Genesis to Revelation, which has essentially been reduced to a footnote to their catalog (as much due to licensing reasons as musical). So, 1970-1975 offers remastered reissues of 1970’s Trespass, 1971’s Nursery Cryme, 1972’s Foxtrot, 1973’s Selling England by the Pound, and 1974’s double-album The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, each presented as a double-disc set containing a remastered CD and DVD-Audio with 5.1 surround sound (in the U.K., these were released as hybrid SACDs instead of standard CDs). All the remastering is exceptional but what makes this set necessary for the devoted is the bonus material — the video added to the DVDs and the whole disc of stray tracks. This supplemental disc has the exceptional B-side “Twilight Alehouse,” the single-only “Happy the Man,” the demo of the terrific “Going Out to Get You,” and the BBC session that produced “Shepherd,” “Pacidy,” and “Let Us Now Make Love” — all tracks that showed up on the 1998 box set Genesis Archives, Vol. 1: 1967-1975, but the real treat is the first official release of the four songs that comprise Genesis Plays Jackson, the band’s soundtrack to a show by artist Michael Jackson. Add to this the video material — limited to interviews on Trespass and Nursery Cryme, but containing full performances on Foxtrot and Selling England, plus the original slide shows used for the stage show of Lamb — and this box turns into something extraordinary: a nearly complete portrait of a restlessly creative band at their peak, whose output only sounds more distinctive with each passing year.

Kristo Rodzevski – Bitter Almonds (2017)

Kristo RodzevskiOn his sophomore release, titled Bitter Almonds, singer and songwriter Krsto Rodzevski shows his full embrace of the ethereal and the noisy, of the melodic and the dissonant, and delivers a moody but kaleidoscopic release. In many ways, “Bitter Almonds” feels like an extension or a branch of the hypnotic calm on Rodzevski’s debut, Batania which was a melodic song cycle full of inner bliss, inner sadness, immersive melancholy and hidden joy. The first word that is likely to be used for describing both records is “folkish” but that would only mistakenly suggest that this is a relaxed comfort music. Sang mostly in English, the words find him tangled up in grief and full of contrasting emotions.
While Batania was decidedly more subdued, as it offered a gentle take on acoustic folk…

107 MB  320 ** FLAC

…with a minimal band support, Bitter Almonds feels like a more toned-down take on the type of instrumental experimentation that Rodzevski’s support band is known for. For this record, Rodzevski has again enlisted the talents of guitarist Mary Halvorson, saxophonist Chris Speed, drummer and producer of this record Tomas Fujiwara, bassist Michael Blanco. Their presence can be felt from the opening “Farewell Burlesque,” a gentle song that wraps itself in a blanket full of contrasting melodies, subdued dissonant guitar lines, and angular guitar hooks, and sometimes almost detached vocals and obscure lyrical references. There is a curious juxtaposition of the traditional and subtle straying from the well-trodden path.

The songs are more fragile, on the cusp of breaking, jammier, looser. Much like the previous outing, it’s all about subtleties. “The Soldier’s Eye” explores classical chamber music but it turns into a pleasant melodic piece where along with cellist Tomeka Reid he captures a kind of sprawling cinematic autumnal folksiness. On songs like “Unfinished Sweater” and “Ladybug” he sounds more playful and bouncy as these songs contain flourishes of sun-kissed 1970s singer-songwriters styled songs. With its shimmering folk-country guitars and soaring Tim Buckley-like harmonies, they feel more like one of Jayhawks’ folkish songs. They certainly break the meditative feel in the previous songs.

Lyric-wise, the songs here are about as earnest and evocative as anything he has ever written. Because of that, the whole of Bitter Almonds is often incredibly personal, and often the rawer the lyrics, the more fragile the music. “Dear Father” has that rustic beauty and autumnal colors of Nick Drake’s songs but without his subdued resignation and desperation. “Bowery” is an upbeat little rocker with Rodzevski’s vocals being processed to achieve an otherworldly effect. It’s a song arranged in several stages with the rock riffing and the theatrical parts where the band is creating a cinematic chamber feel with their improvising. This song feels like a more focused effort and a more definite statement than the rest. The album closes with “Mold” where the clouds encroach on the clear skies. There is a hypnotic feel to the graceful flourishes of the song’s melodies that feel like a filigree.

Bitter Almonds is an evocative collection of simple and elegant songs where it is evident that Rodzevski’s appeal lies in his solid songcraft. At his best, Rodzevski finds depth in simplicity. All of this feels like it was recorded in one go and on the verge of breaking up and crashing down. In other words, these songs sound like demos awaiting full treatment. This record could have benefitted from a tighter editing but given the personal nature probably no rough cuts could have been made without losing the music’s flow and its free nature. Even so, there are many moments to treasure on this record. Evidently, Rodzevski has evolved as an artist, and Bitter Almond is a worthy statement.

Personnel: Kristo Rodzevski: vocals, acoustic guitar; Mary Halvorson: electric guitar; Taylor Ho Bynum: cornet; Chris Speed: tenor saxophone; Tomeka Reid: cello; Michael Blanco: double bass; Tomas Fujiwara: drums

Make Believe is the fifth studio album by American rock band Weezer, released on May 10, 2005 by Geffen Records. The album was considered to be a return to some of the emotionally vulnerable lyrics of Weezer's previous releases, and due to the strength of the hit single "Beverly Hills", the album was a commercial success. In addition, "Beverly Hills" also gained Weezer's first Grammy nomination for Best Rock Song. Despite this, Make Believe received mixed reviews from critics and fans, although it has remained a consistent seller. The recording process of Make Believe began prior to the release of their previous album, Maladroit; however, it was prolonged compared to the recording of most of Weezer's previous albums, and lasted for almost three years. Rivers Cuomo's songwriting on Make Believe was described as "[a] return to musical, emotional bloodletting", although the lyrics were noticeably more simplified than before.

Ben Vaughn – Beautiful Thing (1987/2018)

When the first song on your album is called “Jerry Lewis in France,” you may have some trouble convincing folks that you’re not joking, but though Ben Vaughn has never had a problem with putting his sense of humor up front, it’s his craft as a songwriter and clear love of pop music in all its guises that makes his records work so well, and he rarely hit the target quite as true as he did on his second album, 1987’s Beautiful Thing. Vaughn and his combo certainly sound fine on these sessions, cutting a commanding groove on the uptempo R&B workout “Gimme, Gimme, Gimme,” offering up some bongolated folk-rock with “The North Wind Blew,” and making with a stein of potent frat rock on “She’s a Real Scream,” and Vaughn and his compatriots have a deep enough grasp of rock’s history to not clutter up the arrangements. The tunes on Beautiful Thing never hit harder than they have to or take up more space than necessary, and their modesty only adds to their effectiveness. And for a guy who is supposed to be a barrel of laughs, Vaughn knows more than a little about the serious side of love, as he demonstrates on the soulful closer “Apology Line,” the all-but-awestruck “Beautiful Thing,” and the lovelorn “Big House with a Yard.” No, Ben Vaughn isn’t joking — he just knows that sometimes life can be funny for all the right (and wrong) reasons, and he and his band share some valuable lessons and fine tunes on Beautiful Thing.
