The fifth studio album from Dan Baird & Homemade Sin, entitled Screamer.

Joining core members: Dan Baird and Mauro Magellan (both ex Georgia Satellites) and Warner Hodges (Jason & The Scorchers) is new bass player Sean Savacool.Amongst the writing partners on this album are Terry Anderson “Battleship Chains” and “I Love You Period”.

Screamer is probably the most upbeat album to date, reflecting a positive outlook on life through adversity, with most of the lyrics being influenced by Dan’s diagnoses with CLL (an aggressive form of leukaemia) last year. His enforced time off the road whilst undergoing treatment and eventual all clear from the disease.

Terri Clark has announced her first new album in four years: Raising the Bar will arrive September 14th. Ahead of its release, the Canadian country singer shared the carpe diem track “Young As We Are Tonight.”

Backed by an aggressive beat and featuring Clark’s rich, twang-tinged vocals, the tune extols the virtues of small-town life, capturing colorful snapshots of a county-fair midway and encouraging young people to drink life in to its fullest because “the truth is you and I, we’re never gonna be as young as we are tonight.”

Raising the Bar is the follow-up to the singer-songwriter’s 2014 LP Some Songs, produced by Michael Knox (Jason Aldean, Montgomery Gentry). The new album’s cover art features Clark photographed inside Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge, the Nashville institution on lower Broadway where Clark began performing on a regular basis when she moved from Medicine Hat, Alberta, to Music City in the late Eighties.

Steve is one of the most underrated singers on the UK Americana/Country scene, and one of the hardest working. “A Little North Of Nowhere” is an absolute must purchase double CD, especially the second disc, which offers a fantastic insight into Steve as a songwriter.

Μια παλαιότερη κυκλοφορία ήρθε πριν από λίγες μέρες στα χέρια μου και για την οποία αξίζει να γράψω μερικά λόγια.

Το άλμπουμ αυτό, που έχει τίτλο “Kamasutra / Vollendung der Liebe”[Crippled Dick Hot Wax!], αποτελεί soundtrack μιας γερμανικής ταινίας από το 1969. Το διπλό LP είχε κυκλοφορήσει, για πρώτη φορά ολοκληρωμένο, το2009 –40 χρόνια μετά την πρώτη εμφάνισή του στο σελιλόιντ δηλαδή– και ήταν/είναι συντεθιμένο από τον Irmin Schmidt, τον κιμπορντίστα των CAN. (Λέμε «ολοκληρωμένο», επειδή το 1969 είχε κοπεί ένα 45άρι στη Metronome). Η ταινία λεγόταν Kamasutra / Vollendung der Liebe, ήταν ερωτική φυσικά και σκηνοθετημένη από κάποιον Kobi Jaeger. Στις σημειώσεις του gatefold υπάρχουν στοιχεία για την ταινία, αλλά σχεδόν τίποτα για τη μουσική της. Και βασικά το… ποιοι παίζουν.

Φυσικά, δεν θέλει πολύ κάποιος για να καταλάβει πως στην Kamasutra ακούγονται οι CAN, κάτω από το όνομα Inner Space (Production), καθώς μάλλον εύκολα μπορείς να αντιληφθείς τα παιξίματα των Jaki Liebezeit ντραμς, Michael Karoli κιθάρες, Holger Czukay μπάσο και Malcolm Mooney φωνή – ενώ ακούγεται και φλάουτο, που λογικώς ανήκει στον David C. Johnson(μέλος τότε και αυτός των CAN). Να πούμε πως απ’ όλα αυτά τα ονόματα (και πέραν του Schmidt) στο gatefold αναγράφονται μόνον ο Mooney και η τραγουδίστρια Margarete Juvan(η φωνή στο “I’m hiding my nightingale”), με τους υπόλοιπους να τους… τρώει η μαρμάγκα.

Η μουσική στην Kamasutra είναι άλλοτε ηλεκτρική και άλλοτε ακουστική (στο… παραδοσιακό ινδικό ύφος), αν και χωρίς σιτάρ, μόνο με (ακουστική) κιθάρα, τάμπλες και με το φλάουτο (του Johnson) αντί για μπανσούρι. Φυσικά, στα ηλεκτρικά κομμάτια (σε ένα απ’ αυτά ακούγεται και σιτάρ) έχουμε πλήρη rock αφήγηση και μπάντα (τους CAN, το ξαναλέμε), που παίζει άλλοτε αργά και… ψυχεδελικά, όπως στο “Im temple”, και άλλοτε πιο… σπιντάτα, όπως στο “In Kalkutta III” (αμφότερα τα tracks από το πρώτο LP).

Το δεύτερο LP(Side C) ανοίγει μ’ ένα κάπως περίεργο έως και αλλοπρόσαλλο blues-rock (“Mundharmonika beat”), που εξελίσσεται κατά τον τρόπο των CAN, κάπως μονότονα δηλαδή όσον αφορά στο ρυθμικό τμήμα (γιατί η κιθάρα κάνει καλή… τζαζ δουλειά), ενώ από την τελευταία πλευρά το κομμάτι που ξεχωρίζει είναι το “In Kalkutta II” (που επίσης είναι μονότονα υποχθόνιο, έχοντας με τρόπο ενταγμένα στη ροή του τα διάφορα ακουστικά εφφέ).

Ωραία και αναπάντεχη έκδοση (τουλάχιστον για το 2009, όταν βγήκε για πρώτη φορά στο φως), που σίγουρα κάτι έχει να προσθέσει (και) στο... κεφάλαιο CAN.

Narthen are Barry Coope and Lester Simpson (Coope Boyes and Simpson), Jo Freya (Blowzabella, Moirai) and Fi Fraser (PolkaWorks, The Old Fashioned). The album reflects the eclectic and varied nature of Narthen’s live performances, where pathos and heartbreak are juxtaposed with uplifting humour to produce something rather memorable and moving.

All four members of Narthen are seasoned and gifted instrumentalists and vocalists, as displayed on this album. Peter Bond’s song “It Haunts Me Still” features Country-influenced a cappella four-part harmony singing, while tracks like “Morning Come, Maria Gone” and the heart-breaking rendition of “Heart Like A Wheel” combine vocals with sympathetic instrumental accompaniment. Dotted amongst these songs are purely instrumental tracks, like “Galician Tunes”, which is a glorious, sun-filled romp through some great Spanish melodies.

The album combines the best of timeless, traditional tracks, such as “Acre Of Land”, with songs penned by band members (Lester’s “The VADs” and Jo’s “Devil’s Porridge”), alongside songs written by the cream of contemporary songwriters – for example, here we have Ray Hearne’s “Pudding Burner”, a celebration of female crane drivers working in an overwhelmingly male environment, being given a calypso feel.
