You can learn a lot about artists from the covers they choose. Sarah Borges’ decision to belt out the J.Geils Band gem “Cry One More Time” (also notably done by Gram Parsons), often as a raw concert closer, tells you plenty. Add obscure tracks from Brennen Leigh (a leathery “Lucky Rocks”) and Frankie Miller’s “I Can’t Change It,” the latter wraps up this first studio release from Borges and her Broken Singles backing unit in four years, and it’s clear she is a no-nonsense Americana rocker with taste and a cool record collection.

The album “Devil’s in the Whiskey” is a roots meets modern approach to a variety of genres while keeping the themes connected. The album starts and ends with an original recording of a chain gang and is the re-occurring theme throughout the album. The songs range from late 1800’s all the way up to current modern production. The album was recorded at Studio 1916 in Kyle TX. It’s a beautiful old Victorian style home that was built in 1916 and has been renovated to become a recording studio while preserving it’s historical integrity. In the recording process of the album, producers Travis Kennedy and Blake Atwell took special care and attention to detail, in using time period correct instruments and gear that would have been used in the original recordings within the themes throughout the album. It’s an album that takes you on a journey through time while keeping a roots theme throughout.

Rhyece O’Neill taught Rick (bass) the songs a couple of weeks prior though Danny (drums) had never heard any of them until the day of the session. Once they had the right sound and were ready to go Rhyece would teach Danny and Rick the songs in the studio kitchen with an acoustic guitar. After a beer they were ready. They would go in and Nell (Engineer) would roll the tape. They never did more than three takes. Once a song was done they would go back to the kitchen, have another beer and learn another song. They recorded fifteen songs this way.

Rhyece O’Neill’s songwriting talent has received praise from Tex Perkins (The Cruel Sea/Beasts of Bourbon), Spencer P. Jones (Beasts of Bourbon/Gun Club), Brian Hooper (Beasts of Bourbon/Roland S. Howard), Richard Kingsmill (Triple J Music director) & Steven Walker (The Ghost Triple R Radio). He has toured and performed with The Beasts of Bourbon, The Ape, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Spencer P. Jones, Hanni El Khatib & White Denim. Steeped in the blues, rock & roll and country his influences range from Iggy Pop, W.H. Auden, PJ Harvey, The Cramps, Nick Cave, Mark Lanegan, Sylvia Plath, David Lynch, Rowland S. Το τελευταίο τραγούδι που έγραψε ο Μανώλης Χιώτης και που, κατά πάσα πιθανότητα, δεν πρόλαβε να το ακούσει (από τον Γιώργο Χατζηαντωνίου). Εξάλλου, εδώ, ούτε μπουζούκι παίζει, ούτε τη διεύθυνση έχει (η οποία ανήκει στον Μάρκο Καράμπελα, που έπαιζε κρουστά στο συγκρότημά του). Αποτυπώνει, δε, με ανατριχιαστική ακρίβεια το τελευταίο δύσκολο διάστημα της ζωής τού μέγιστου βιρτουόζου, συνθέτη κ.λπ., όταν τον είχαν ξεχάσει πολλοί (και πολλές), και βάδιζε απογοητευμένος προς το θάνατο (έχοντας και το υπάρχον πρόβλημα με την καρδιά του).

Πέθανε στα 80 του ο Takehisa Kosugi, μεγάλη μορφή της ιαπωνικής avant (Taj Mahal Travellers κ.λπ.). Είχε επισκεφθεί τουλάχιστον δύο φορές την Ελλάδα. Εδώ υπάρχουν αρκετά στοιχεία…

Κάποιος αναγνώστης του Χρήστου Χωμενίδη τον αποκάλεσε, χθες, «λογοτέχνη» και (ο Χωμενίδης) παρεξηγήθηκε. Έγραψε: «Δεν είμαι λογοτέχνης, κύριε. Συγγραφέας είμαι. Γράφω για να με διαβάζουν οι άνθρωποι, οι κανονικοί άνθρωποι, όχι οι σοφολογιότατοι και οι στρατευμένοι κομματικά. Η λογοτεχνίτιδα[sic] είναι η κυτταρίτιδα της γραφής».

Πριν λίγες μέρες όμως πανηγύριζε, όταν τον είχαν «πρώτο» στα ευπώλητα της «ελληνικής ΛΟΓΟΤΕΧΝΙΑΣ». Συνεπής…

Αυτό το άλμπουμ το άκουσα το 2006, όταν το ξανατύπωσε σε 2LP η ισπανική Guerssen. Ο Bob Theil είναι σκωτσέζος τραγουδοποιός και θα μπορούσε να είχε βγάλει αυτά τα άσματα στα τέλη του ’60 ή τις αρχές του ’70, αλλά τα έβγαλε το 1982!

Προσωπικά, θα έβαζα το "So Far..." ανάμεσα στα καλύτερα άλμπουμ της δεκαετίας...
