Multi-platinum singer songwriter Hozier will release new album, Wasteland, Baby!Wasteland, Baby! is the follow up to Hoziers critically acclaimed self titled debut album, which has now amassed over 2.5 billion streams while his total and the album has sold over 850 thousand copies in the UK, going platinum in the process, while the record has sold 4 million copies worldwide. Om niet nader verklaarbare redenen duikt er altijd een gevoel
van nostalgie op zo tegen het eind van het jaar. Er komen platen
uit de kast die er al 30 of 40 jaar in staan. In 1974 maakte hij dit
album wat zijn laatste bleek te worden. Tim Buckley, de vader van
Jeff, nam een lijn coke dacht hij. Het bleek echter een cocktail van
heroine en morfine te zijn en werd hem fataal. Hij was slechts 28.
Tim’s unieke muziek was een mix van pop en soul en had een heel
eigen geluid. Zijn laatste plaat was de eerste die ik van hem hoorde
waarschijnlijk ergens in 1977, sindsdien ben ik altijd een groot fan
geweest. Hoog tijd dat hij zijn intrede maakt hier op de GG. Deze
zal ongetwijfeld navolging krijgen. Luister naar de magische
sound van Timothy Charles Buckley III, een cult held ..

Without explainable reason, around this time of year, a feeling
of nostalgia always pops up. Records that have been on the shelf
for 30 or 40 years come out and relive. In 1974 he made this album
which became his last one. Tim Buckley, Jeff’s father, thought he took
a line of coke. It appeared to be a cocktail of heroin and morfine and
killed him. He was only 28 years old. Tim’s unique musical style was
a mixture of pop, soul and avantgarde, funky and very much his own.
His last record was the first one I heard, probably somewhere in 1977.
I have been a huge fan eversince. High time his work is posted here
at the GG. It will be followed up without doubt. Listen to the magical
sound of Timothy Charles Buckley III, one of my all time heroes ..

E-Street Band guitarist Steve Van Zandt left the band following the recording of Born In The U.S.A. and released his own album, Voice Of America. It was Van Zandt’s second album, after his prior release Men Without Women, and he was again backed by the Disciples Of Soul, including bassist Jean Beauvoir, and drummer Dino Danelli. Van Zandt himself handled vocals and guitars, as well as writing and producing the record’s ten songs (the 1991 reissue included two bonus cuts). Voice Of America is a straight-ahead rock record with punk underpinnings and strong percussive rhythms. Van Zandt is a bit thin and reedy as a singer, but manages to carry through on passion and bravado. The lyrics have political overtones and occasionally come off as preachy. There’s still some riveting stuff here including the rave-up rocking wake-up call of the title track, the propulsive, synth-driven anthem “Out Of The Darkness,” and “Los Desaparecidos,” a compelling, percussive-laden cut detailing the casualties of South American politics.

This album was a great surprise and overall pleasure back in 1972: following a disappointing (2nd Reprise LR effort) called KING OF ROCK AND ROLL, which was essentially a semi-throw away for The King, with the notable exceptions of amazing *vocals* on hits by the Stones, Creedence, and Motown artists. This ’72 release on a small label, Ala, featured long, stereo versions of tracks originally released Vee jay – particularly important were the slow blues from fats Domino, “Goin’ Home Tomorrow” (aka “Goin’ Home”), featuring Don and Dewey, with Don on electric violin!; and “Lawdy, Miss Clawdy”, the best cover” ofthis legendary number, originated by the man who urged Little Richard to contact his label, Specialty Records.

These two tunes, along with “Hound Dog”, “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On”, “Money Honey”, and “Goodnight, Irene”, featured Don and Dewey, who often gigged with a guy mnamed Maurice James, who also played fill-in Upsetter for Richard’s band! Jimi sname may not be found in the company files for the June 30, 1964 session in Los Angeles, but the “evidence” is on the side of…yes, Jimi’s here. And he can be *heard*! (Listen to the high notes on guitar on “Tomorrow”).

The reamining tracks were, strangely, recently recorded tracks for Reprise records, which came out in 2005, under different songtitles, and in two cases, markedly different mixes (on instrumentals), and in another take on Hank Williams’ “Why Don’t You Love Me?”.

Looking back, Richard and co. would have been alot better off loping off some curious things herein and substituting three tracks which even Hendrix “experts” say involved JH, “I Don’t Know What You’ve Got (But It’s Got Me)” – two versions, and “Dancing All Around The World” (pressed on a demo under the title of “Dance A Go Go”). Για το πρώτο άλμπουμ των (Ελλήνων) Kenny Freq, το “15-16 The Pleasure Garden” (2017), είχαμε γράψει τον Ιούνιο του ’17, τονίζοντας την ευχάριστη ποπ παρουσία τού συγκροτήματος και την ικανότητά του να προτείνει ωραία αγγλόφωνα τραγούδια, με αρχή, μέση και τέλος. Τώρα, οι Kenny Freqέχουν έτοιμο το δεύτερο άλμπουμ τους, ψηφιακό μόνο σε πρώτη φάση (δεν ξέρω αν θα υπάρξει στο μέλλον και σε φυσική μορφή), ένα επίσης πολύ ενδιαφέρον long-play, που φέρνουν εις πέρας οι Ted Sourvinos φωνή, κιθάρες, Theo Papμπάσο, φωνή, Κωνσταντίνος Συνοδινός πλήκτρα, φωνή και Stef Kobi ντραμς, φωνή. Το άλμπουμ περιλαμβάνει δώδεκα θέματα, διαθέτοντας και κάποιο concept. Όπως γράφουν οι ίδιοι οι Kenny Freq σε σχέση με το “OST: 17-18 The Hall” [Private Pressing, 2019]:

«Μια κοινωνία κινηματo-γραφικών ηρώων, κλεισμένη σ’ ένα Hall, που τους ταιριάζει και το διαμορφώνουν. Ήρωες από μια σινεμάτικ φαντασίωση του Blake Edwards, με σεναριακές νευρώσεις Woody Allen και με μιαν όμορφη δόση σοβαρότητας επιπέδου John Waters. Λαμπεροί, αλλά και βρώμικοι. Μεγαλειώδεις, αλλά και λούμπεν. Μοναχικοί, αλλά και αθεράπευτα ματαιόδοξοι. Ανθρώπινοι και larger than life (σε βαθμό “εξαφάνισης”. Το The Hall είναι δικό τους».

Τα τραγούδια των Kenny Freq έχουν μιαν μπητλική, pop-ψυχεδελική ορμή. Και αυτό δεν το συναντάς κάθε μέρα, ούτε στην ελληνική, ούτε στην μη-ελληνική pop. Δεν είναι μόνον το ότι πρόκειται για καλοφτιαγμένα τραγούδια, είναι κυρίως το γεγονός πως κάθε ένα απ’ αυτά, το ένα μετά το άλλο, οικοδομούν ένα άλμπουμ με ακριβή συνέπεια, έτοιμο να κατακτήσει, από τις πρώτες κιόλας νότες του, όλους εκείνους που θα αφεθούν στη ροή και τη γοητεία του.

Γιατί, ναι, είναι γοητευτικό το “17-18 The Hall”, πέραν από τις ψιλο-αδυναμιούλες του (προσωπικώς θα ήθελα μία ακόμη πιο άρτια και φροντισμένη φωνητική τακτοποίηση, και σε φωνή και σε φωνητικά) – κι εκεί επάνω, στην γοητεία του, ακουμπά η αξία και η σημαντικότητά του.

Μία... βινυλιοποίηση όχι απλώς αξίζει, στην περίπτωσή μας, αλλά και επιβάλλεται.
