Η Μιράντα Βερούλη είναι μία πολύ καλή τραγουδίστρια, που ειδικεύεται από χρόνια στο βραζιλιάνικο τραγούδι. Το λέω, επειδή την παρακολουθώ (σε πάλκο και δισκογραφία) από 20ετίας. Βεβαίως, τον τελευταίο καιρό δεν την έχω δει κάπου live, αλλά αυτό δεν σημαίνει κάτι. Δεν αλλάζει, εννοώ, εκείνο που ήδη έγραψα, το σχετικό με τη βαθιά ενασχόλησή της με τη βραζιλιάνικη jazz, την bossa nova κ.λπ. Απόδειξη, δε, αυτού είναι το πιο καινούριο CD της (που μάλλον είναι και το πρώτο προσωπικό της), που έχει τίτλο “Onírico” [ΤΕΧΝΟΤΡΟΠΟΝ ARTWAY, 2018] και που κυκλοφόρησε προς το τέλος του ’18 (παρότι είναι ηχογραφημένο τον Μάρτιο του 2015). Στο “Onírico” καταγράφονται δεκατρία tracks (επτά versionsκαι έξι originals), που όλα μαζί διαμορφώνουν ένα πολύ αξιόλογο set, που «ανεβαίνει» ακόμη περισσότερο από την παρουσία και τη συμμετοχή των διακεκριμένων (ελλήνων) σολιστών. Έτσι, και πέραν της Βερούλη που τραγουδά βεβαίως, στο “Onírico” παίρνουν μέρος και οι Ανδρέας Πολυζωγόπουλος τρομπέτα, φλούγκελχορν, Σπύρος Μάνεσης πιάνο, πλήκτρα, Μάνος Αναγνωστόπουλος μπάσο, Δημήτρης Κλωνής ντραμς και Πέτρος Κούρτης κρουστά (σ’ ένα track).

Κατ’ αρχάς εκείνο που εντυπωσιάζει (πριν ρίξεις το CDστο player) είναι οι επιλογές των versions, γεγονός που δείχνει όχι μόνο βαθύ ψάξιμο στη δισκογραφία, αλλά και μιαν εξοικείωση με το χώρο – κάτι όχι παράξενο, αν αναλογιστούμε το εύρος ενασχόλησης της Βερούλη με τη βραζιλιάνικη μουσική (και γενικότερα με την κουλτούρα της μακρινής χώρας). Να σημειώσουμε, λοιπόν, κάπως αναλυτικότερα αυτά τα τραγούδια, που διασκευάζονται εδώ, γιατί είναι εκείνα που δίνουν εν τέλει το ξεχωριστό χρώμα αυτού του ελληνικού CD(και το λέμε τούτο, δίχως να υποτιμούμε τα πρωτότυπα tracks, για τα οποία θα γράψουμε ειδικώς στη συνέχεια). Έχουμε και λέμε λοιπόν:

1. “Chove chuva” του Jorge Ben από το πρώτο άλμπουμ του “Samba Esquema Novo” [Philips, 1963]

2. “Luz de Tieta” του Caetano Veloso από το soundtrack “Tieta do Agreste” [Natasha Records, 1996]

3. “Nanã” των Mário Telles και Moacir Santos, που υπάρχει στο άλμπουμ “Mário Telles” [CBS, 1964], αν και το τραγούδι πιθανώς να το είπε πρώτος, την ίδια χρονιά (1964), ο Wilson Simonal, ενώ μέσα στο 1964 το είχε πει και η Nara Leão

3. “Samba da Rosa” των Vinicius De Moraes/ Toquinho, που ηχογραφήθηκε το 1970 από το Osmar Milito Trio σ’ ένα 7ιντσο των Toquinho & Vinicius De Moraes

5. “A rã” των Caetano Veloso/ João Donato, που είχε πει η Gal Costa στο άλμπουμ της “Cantar” [Philips, 1974]

6. “Luiza” του Antonio Carlos Jobim, με την πια παλαιά εκτέλεση που βρήκα να προέρχεται από ένα LP των  Edu Lôbo και Tom Jobim, που είχε κυκλοφορήσει το 1981

7. “Voce”του Tim Maiaαπό το φερώνυμο άλμπουμ του στην Polydor, το 1971

Περιττό να πω πως τα τραγούδια ερμηνεύονται από τη Μιράντα Βερούλη και αποδίδονται από το συγκρότημά της με ιδανικό τρόπο. Εντάξει, είναι και οι επιλογές μία και μία, αλλά δεν μπορείς να μην εξάρεις και να μην καταευχαριστηθείς τα εκπληκτικά “Luzde Tieta” (από τα ωραιότερα τραγούδια του Veloso) και “Samba da Rosa” (με φοβερή πιανιστική παρουσία του Μάνεση α λα Walter Wanderley).

Το “Amor-amor” είναι το πρώτο ελληνικό track του CD και είναι γραμμένο από την Μιράντα Βερούλη. Πρόκειται για μια μποσανόβα βασικά, με δυνατά φωνητικά και πλήρες τζαζ περίβλημα, με τον Πολυζωγόπουλο να κάνει άψογη δουλειά μπροστά και με τον Μάνεση να γεμίζει με πλήκτρα στο background.

Ακολουθεί το ενός λεπτού “ColoresFeliz intro” (του Πολυζωγόπουλου) και καπάκι όπως λέμε το “Colores Feliz” (Βερούλη-Πολυζωγόπουλος), που είναι ένα αργό track, μια brazilian μπαλάντα, απ’ αυτές που δύσκολα πιστεύεις ότι μπορεί να έχουν γραφτεί (και τραγουδηθεί) από μη Βραζιλιάνους.

Στο ίδιο μοτίβο και το “Saudosa” της Μιράντας Βερούλη – ένα έξοχο τραγούδι με ισχυρή sixties ρίζα, που φέρνει στη μνήμη μου την Wanda Sá!

Για το “Samba da Rosa” των Vinicius De Moraes/ Toquinho o Πολυζωγόπουλος ετοιμάζει μιαν εισαγωγή, ένα μικρό σόλο στο φλούγκελχορν, που είναι αυτό ακριβώς για το οποίο προοριζόταν.

Το τελευταίο ελληνικό track του CD είναι το “Oníro (Dream)” της Μιράντας Βερούλη, ένα ακόμη πρώτης τάξεως τραγούδι με απαιτητικό δόσιμο από κάθε πλευρά (και οργανοπαικτική και τραγουδιστική), με τη Βερούλη να τραγουδάει για πρώτη και τελευταία φορά στο άλμπουμ στην ελληνική γλώσσα.

Και είναι αυτό ίσως και μιαν υπόσχεση, για κάτι που μπορεί στο μέλλον ν’ ακολουθήσει…

We had some extremely nice days here in the Netherlands. It is only
february and officially still winter, with temperatures until 20 degrees
however, it felt like summer. Tropical weather asks for tropical music.
I am such a bad writer, always the same story, cold weather asks for
hot music to stay warm. what ever the weather, here at the Global
Groove we play tropical music all year round. It is my lack of fantasy
and poor knowledge of the music and artists we post. What can I say,
You know what I like most by now, lots of vallenato, rumba, samba,
forró, son cubano, merengue, cumbia, congolese etcetera . No deep
info here, just the music, some pictures and video’s sometimes.
Listen to these 10 vallenatos by 10 artists I really love ..

P.S. I’m not exactly sure why Abel Antonio Villa is mentioned
on the sleeve. Maybe he wrote these songs, can’t seem to find out ..

De afgelopen dagen was het weer extreem mooi hier in Nederland.
Ik hoef dat jullie niet te vertellen maar het is nu eenmaal de gewoonte
in Engels en Nederlands min of meer hetzelfde slappe verhaal op te
hangen. De meeste van jullie zullen echter wel een woordje Engels
verstaan dus het gaat nergens over dat ik dit doe. ..en dan ga ik verder,
tropisch weer vraagt om tropische klanken, bla bla, ik heb altijd hetzelfde
fantasieloze verhaal. Geen diepgravende beschouwingen hier op de Global
Groove maar slechts de muziek, wat foto’s en soms een videootje. Ik ben
echt een schrijver van niets en weet ook nog eens geen drol aan zinnigs
te melden. Nee, dan moet je eens kijken bij Holland Tunnel Dive, dat is
andere koek. Ik ben serieus hoor, dat is nou echt een top site. Goed,
hier is een plaat met 10 lekkere vallenato’s door 10 artiesten
die ik hoog heb zitten, luister ..

P.S. Ik weet niet zeker waarom Abel Antonio Villa wordt genoemd op de
hoes. Misschien schreef hij deze nummers, ik kan het even niet vinden ..

‘Inferno’ is acclaimed Australian singer-songwriter Robert Forster’s first solo album in four years – his second album over the last eleven years. Forster only makes records when he feels he has the songs – on ‘Inferno’, he has nine he totally believes in. They range from the exhilarating top ten pop of ‘Inferno (Brisbane In Summer)’, the beach shack groove of ‘Life Has Turned A Page’, via ‘Remain’s 1977 New York strut, to finish in a way that this concise, brilliant, drama and wit filled album only can – on the big build epic ‘One Bird In The Sky’. ‘Inferno’ was made in Berlin in 2018, during the hottest German summer in decades. Placeless is the first collaboration between the San Francisco-based Kronos Quartet and Iranian singers Mahsa and Marjan Vahdat, two of the most important performers of Persian vocal music in the world today. The Aromanians (Aromanian: Rrãmãnj, Armãnj)are an ethnic group native to the Balkans, traditionally living in northern and central Greece, central and southern Albania, the Republic of North Macedonia, Kosovo and south-western Bulgaria and Romania. The term Vlachs is used in Greece to refer to Aromanians, but this term is internationally used to encompass all Romance-speaking peoples of the Balkans.

Aromanians speak the Aromanian language, a Latin-derived vernacular similar to Romanian, and has many slightly varying dialects of its own.  It descends from the Vulgar Latin spoken by the Paleo-Balkan peoples subsequent to their Romanization. Aromanian is a mix of domestic and Latin language with additional influences from other surrounding languages of the Balkans, mainly Greek, Albanian, Macedonian and Bulgarian.

Yves Jarvis is a clean slate, a recasting of Montreal-based musician Jean-Sebastian Audet. Audet previously created under the name Un Blonde, a name which he says was, at one point, all he wanted.

Each of Yves’s albums is informed and driven by a colour; it is both a visual and thematic palette that reflects and refracts intentions. Un Blonde’s 2017 album Good Will Come To You was yellow, which Audet cites as his favourite colour. It is, for him, the colour of the daytime. Blue, the colour of The Same But By Different Means, is less endearing.

“Blue is more so the colour that I think is imposed on me,” he remarks quietly. “Where the last record was the joy of the morning, and optimism, this record is the pain of the night before sleep. I find it so painful before sleep, and this midnight blue is what this whole world is. The night is just completely imposed and weighing so heavily and this is a much more difficult realm to walk around in, texturally.”

But with The Same But By Different Means Audet continues to create music that is at once warm, haunting, and unfamiliar while remaining singularly inviting and kind—a mélange that reflects both comfort and its counterpart. Good Will Come To You was celebrated universally for the things that make Audet’s work compelling: careful folk noir, tender R&B flourishes, pillowy vocal beds that somehow seem to neither begin nor end, and a punkish ambivalence towards saccharine melodics that traditionally dominate the previous three structures.

These same qualities are present across The Same But By Different Means, a record that builds a delightful, imaginative framework from which to explore what it means to be Yves Jarvis. Songs on the record range from 14 seconds long to over eight minutes. The record’s title is itself a step further: with each new project, Audet adds a word to the title. “This year is my transition into Yves Jarvis where I’m not only widening the scope, but deepening the picture altogether.”
