They were audience favorites, had a subscription to the hitparades, landed success in series: Schlagerstars of the 50s and 60s in Germany. It was clear, however, that their record companies and management did not suffice in the long run, because even then the lucrative English and American markets were the measure of all things.
As a result, musical test balloons were launched, hardly noticed by the local public. If a Paul Anka or Laurie London, a Connie Francis or Vera Lynn were suddenly able to sing in the German language, why should not the opposite way throw off one or other hit beyond the borders?
And so it came about that long established producers like Peter Kraus, Freddy Quinn, Manuela, Ted Herold and many others in the recording studio again found – with English lyrics in front of the nose.
The resulting singles remained almost exclusively exotics. Today, about forty years after its formation, many of these discs are sought. Made in not very large editions, they are among the rarities of the genre; Some titles were even polled back at the last moment before the planned release, remained to this day in the ‘toxic cabinet’.

With this album, Matthews’ Southern Comfort is a real band and, in addition to Matthews, also includes Roger Swallow (ex-Marmalade) and Marc Griffiths (ex-Spooky Tooth). Though there is really nothing that makes this a memorable record, it’s still quite a nice record overall. If you already know his work on Elektra, Mooncrest, or even Later That Same Year, it would be well worth your while to search this record out.

Mambo Mania! may not be the last word on the Afro-Cuban music of the 1950s and ’60s, but for beginners, it’s a darn nice place to start. Rhino can usually be counted on to do its homework when assembling compilations, and this superb 18-song CD is no exception. Serious fans of what came to be called salsa will be more than familiar with such classics as Celia Cruz’s "Tumba La Cana, Jibarito," Beny More’s "Me Gusta Mas El Son" and Tito Puente’s "Guaguanco Margarito" – all of which are essential listening for even the most casual salseros.
Recorded in 1949, the oldest song here is the infectious "Un Poquito De Tu Amor" by Desi Arnaz, who became well known for his role on the television comedy "I Love Lucy." From Tito Rodriguez, Cachao and the ultra-influential Machito to master percussionists/band leaders Ray Barretto and Mongo Santamaria, many of salsa’s all-time greats are well represented by this outstanding collection.

LES HURLEMENTS D’LEO Un album de très grande classe pour un retour tonitruant Une tournée hallucinante, les Hurlements d’Léo seront sans conteste le groupe scène de l’année 2011 Bordel de Luxe , c’est la réponse du groupe au découragement ambiant, la même volonté de prendre le monde à bras le corps, de taper du poing sur la table en rappelant des choses essentielles. Changer quelques têtes a remis les choses à plat, un peu d’huile nouvelle dans les rouages et permet à la machine de prendre un rythme nouveau. La base reste la même mais ce Bordel tape davantage au foie, un coup direct, une affirmation rageuse, réplique plus dure à une société qui l’est devenue davantage aussi. Ca donne un son plus rock, renforcé par les influences des nouveaux venus, avec la volonté de coller un son plus lourd à des textes plus abrasifs, le désir d’aller à l’essentiel comme une vertu salvatrice, de crier la rage de l’injuste baignée dans la joie de la renaissance. Opposition et fusion : le noyau des Hurlements a explosé et la réaction est sans chaîne. On a pris le temps de tout poser parce que l’urgence brouillonne des débuts a laissé place à la volonté de faire et de dire consciemment, d’affirmer haut et clair. Tant au niveau musical, plus travaillé, avec de belles prises de gros son de Fred Norguet aux manettes (Ez3kiel, Spicy Box, Burning Heads), qui alimentent de belles parties acoustiques, qu’au niveau de l’état d’esprit. Les HDL savent qu’on les attend et ils ont peaufiné leur travail. On n’a pas eu le temps de les attendre. Trois ans, c’est peu pour une séparation. Mais ça laisse suffisamment de temps pour retrouver l’énergie qui les alimente en continu depuis quinze ans. Car c’est cette énergie qui nourrit les débuts ravageurs des Hurlements d’Léo : On a eu du succès parce qu’on s’en foutait. On était mobiles et sans complexes. Laurent Kebous retrace avec recul les premiers pas si peu hésitants d’un groupe qui allait faire retentir au début des années 2000 les échos bouleversés du mouvement alternatif. A leur façon, les Hurlements reprenaient un flambeau avec lequel ils allaient enflammer les scènes aux quatre vents du globe. De la chanson française que l’on disait déjà nouvelle , ils respiraient le goût des textes bien foutus. De l’alternatif des 80’s, ils reprenaient la démarche et l’esprit, la volonté d’aller, même vent debout, mettre leurs tripes sur scène juste pour la gloire fugace de se dire que le concert était bien ce soir là. On a pris le temps de tout poser parce que l’urgence brouillonne des débuts a laissé place à la volonté de faire et de dire consciemment, d’affirmer haut et clair. Tant au niveau musical, plus travaillé, avec de belles prises de gros son qui alimentent de belles parties acoustiques, qu’au niveau de l’état d’esprit. Les HDL savent qu’on les attend et ils ont peaufiné leur travail. Ils sont moins boulimiques aussi : moins de dates, pas de tournées marathon qui n’en finissent plus et rabotent l’envie mais des concerts mieux calés où ils pourront davantage tout livrer, mettre à nouveaux leur âme sur scène et gueuler leur fougue retrouvée : Le plaisir au maximum et sus aux peine-à-jouir . Car le désir s’accroît quand l’effet se recule ou dans un monde en plein bordel, les Hurlements d’Léo offrent le luxe d’une issue de secours.

Calvin Russell is the real deal, an authentic Texas-born cowboy whose face is a trail of hard-earned lines, proof of the rough mileage he’s put on his body since his birth in 1948 in Austin. For someone who likes Texas and Russell’s brand of country music, the act of researching his life and misadventures could be fun if it weren’t for one thing: all the juicy stuff — including Russell’s stint in jail — that’s been printed about the singing American cowboy is in French. Sometimes it’s in another European language. Far less often will you find any significant write-ups in the language of his birthplace, and that’s because Russell found his greatest success, professionally and personally, far from home. He is a business owner; the proprietor of a Swiss nightclub. His wife is Swiss. A good percentage of his albums were recorded in Europe.
The singer/songwriter was one of nine children born to his working-class parents, Red and Daisy. The family lived on an unpaved road, not far from the town’s wrecking yard. His mom was a waitress in the same little cafй where his dad did the cooking. Calvin Russell, their sixth child, spent his youth putting together hot-rod cars. Before he turned 13, he’d discovered the guitar. Within a year, Russell was playing with an outfit called the Cavemen. A wild time during his teens brought him to the attention of local authorities, who sent him to juvenile detention and, later, prison. At one point in the mid-’80s, he did time in a Mexican jail, where he spent his nights on a cold concrete floor. Upon his release, he headed back to his hometown, where his condition didn’t improve much. He made his bed outdoors, in the small area beneath a house, in the dirt. Russell took to the open road on a motorcycle and began to write his songs in the Texas hill country.
By 1985, he had a single to his credit. Thanks to a chance meeting with record company executive Patrick Mathe four years later at Austin’s Continental Club, Russell landed a contract with the French company that would release many of his albums, New Rose Records. Russell later went on to sign with Sony after New Rose Records folded. New Rose’s release of Russell’s A Crack in Time album in 1990 caused a stir for the artist, and he started picking up quite a bit of attention. He went on to play festivals in Europe alongside such artists as the Kinks and Little Village. Three more albums followed from New Rose. Le Voyageur is a recording of live shows performed by Russell in such French cities as Rennes and Paris. When the record company was sinking and its assets frozen in bankruptcy proceedings, Russell was very close to having his career tied up in the company’s legal woes. Dick Rivers, who had a career decades earlier in pop, rescued Russell when he purchased the singer/songwriter’s contract. Soon, Sony found Russell and stepped into the picture.

Chicagoland native Tristen Gaspadarek is a Nashville-based singer/songwriter who records and performs under the name Tristen. Inspired by Beatles songs on oldies radio and encouraged by her musician father, Tristen began experimenting with music at a young age, recording at home and playing at local coffeehouses. After graduating from De Paul University, she relocated to Nashville to further pursue a career in music. In 2009, she compiled a CD of her home recordings titled Teardrops and Lollipops, which she sold at shows in unique hand-sewn sleeves. In early 2011, she released a more definitive debut called Charlatans at the Garden Gate, an album of smartly written indie pop with strains of folk and Americana. The album was well received, earning praise from NPR, Paste Magazine, and Spin. She went on tour with established acts like Justin Townes Earle and Ezra Furman & the Harpoons before heading back to Nashville to record her follow-up. Lacking a record label, Tristen opted to fund her next album through a successful Kickstarter campaign. The resulting release was 2013’s Caves, an eloquently made, synth-driven album and stylistic left turn for Tristen. Like its predecessor Charlatans, Caves was also named Best Local Album in 2013 by the Nashville Scene Critics Poll. After touring in support of Caves, Tristen hit the road again as part of Jenny Lewis’ backing band, and in 2016 she published a book of poetry, Saturnine. In 2017, Tristen released the LP Sneaker Waves though Modern Outsider Records.

NNA Tapes is very pleased to present the latest full-length recording from Burlington, Vermont artist Wren Kitz. Following up his debut album “For Evelyn” back in 2015, “Dancing On Soda Lake” continues confidently in the unique and personal style of music that Wren has carved out for himself over the years. By blending traditional guitar-and-voice songwriting with field recording and tape collage experimentation, Kitz has developed a ghostly and contemplative form of musical expression all his own that breaks down walls between genre categorizations. Together with a newly-assembled band consisting of percussion and strings, “Dancing On Soda Lake” is Kitz’s most full-realized and captivating effort to date.
With a recurring aqueous motif both lyrically and sonically, “Dancing On Soda Lake” captures this essence elegantly throughout the gentle impermanence of it’s luminous song cycle, flowing freely back and forth between beauty and mystery, not unlike our own plasmic origins. Wren’s sensitive vocal delivery drifts carefully between loose, rhythmic tempos and plucks of the guitar, punctuated by swells of percussion and heart-wrenching harmonies from the bass, cello, and violin. The oblique lyrics hint at a narrative, though never fully disclose their true intentions, utilizing abstractions in language to shroud meaning, the way that dusk envelops a landscape. Themes of confusion, isolation, and existentialism indicate that there is a distinct darkness buried in these songs – though it is not articulated through sonic aggression, but rather through mood by way of wistful melancholia and bittersweet recollection.
The most intriguing aspect of Kitz’s compositions is his ardent dedication to magnetic tape, unlocking its tangible and nostalgic qualities not only through recording, but through instrumental utilization as well. A dedicated field recorder, Wren’s travels with his tape recorder yield a trove of extracted sonic memories that he is able to access in his songs through manipulation and collage. Wren captures literal moments from his life and recontextualizes them as musical elements, building textures and atmospheres from a faded reality, from subtle rustlings to roaring oceanic vastness. This blending of fidelities creates a very dynamic listen by constructing a hypnagogic tension between traditional songwriting and avant-garde experimentation. Through Wren’s distinctive musical vision and his tasteful mastery of his materials, “Dancing On Soda Lake” manifests as an intimate yet mystifying album, like viewing a sparkling body of water through a distorted lens.

Natalie Chami’s project Talsounds documents solo sessions of improvised synthesis and live-looped vocal performances, presented to the listener as discrete takes without overdubs. The decisions she makes in her atmospheric sketches – the onset of a quivering vocal melody, the echoing turn of a delay knob – flash across her stereo spreads as seismic ripples within a network of standing sounds. Frozen into recursive afterimages of fingers on keys, her intricate synth arrangements juxtapose textures from her rig of analog electronic instruments and compound into narrative arcs at once alien in tone and direct in human-to-human address. Love Sick, Talsounds’s first LP release, follows a series of full-length tapes on labels like Hausu Mountain (run by Chami’s bandmates in free music trio Good Willsmith), Patient Sounds, and Moog’s own physical imprint. While these releases showcased Chami’s ideas in the context of looser improvisations, drifting off into extended states of narcosis and looping architectures, Love Sick distills her tactics of spontaneous composition into her most concise song cycle to date.

The Americans seem to be popping up everywhere lately. The band from Los Angeles had been toiling for several years, playing small gigs and honing their Americana sound. Until recently, they held the (unofficial) title of “best-unsigned band” in America.

One could say the band was “discovered” by the team of Jack White, T Bone Burnett and actor Robert Redford when they were putting together the documentary “American Epic,” recently broadcast on the BBC. The Americans were a house band of sorts, contributing several tunes to the series soundtrack. Their skilful approach to the roots tradition on tracks like Jubilee is evident on the soundtrack.

They’ve performed on “The Late Show” and once played back up for a band made up of Lucinda Williams, Nick Cave and Courtney Love. They were also included on an album of sea shanty songs (Son of Rogues Gallery) along with the likes of Tom Waits and Keith Richards. The Americans are long overdue to make some noise for themselves.
